Re: Join up!! Army against the grog !!! April 2018

Morning Mollymooo and Rustletop.

I drank to get drunk and the quicker the better. It was only financial reasons when I was younger that curtailed it. Back then the only real warning was to drink plenty of water before bed to stop you getting dehydrated in the morning.
Think the hiding of bottle came in during the last five years of active drinking.
It could be worse, I could be filing.

Yea that Molls and I was talking to someone who said that when we're busy or stressed some hormone kicks in and we fight off illness.
This is deffo true of my DD - she is stressy stressy- busy busy - but EVERY time she has a holiday - especially 2 weeks at Christmas she gets sick.
Maybe that what's happening with Joe - having worked all his life ? the body just relaxes ? or something ?

Yep we hide drinks when we know we are drinking inappropriately.
But inappropriate can just mean not socially acceptable.

My problem started when I got pissed off going out to the local GAA club where all they did was talk about shaggin' football.
I would have a bottle at home instead Saturday nights & MrS did not like this as he NEVER drinks at home - thinks it's odd. This escalated - I began then hiding the bottles - that was the slippery slope.
When kids left home - it was a free-for-all 'cos he never noticed. This then coincided with the menopause & insomnia - DISASTER ! The alcohol only served to increase the sleep problem even after menopause.
starty - So I REALLY feel your pain Starts.
The thing that worked for me was the magnesium + L-tryptophan ( helps anxiety) capsules I got in the gym. Happily this coincided with quitting drinking - and I haven't looked back.
I use the Magnesium spray every evening & sleep like a log.

I often wonder what would happen if I announced that I wanted to have a drink, would he run out and get a few bottles without question..probably.
Yep it sounds exactly like our house. I think if I said I'll only drink when I go out - Mr S would be grand with that because it's 'normal'.
Not 'odd' drinking at home like I did .....
He's accepted at last that Young Satz is an alcoholic but never saw enough of my problem drinking to class me as one
It's not a word he uses too often about anyone :shakingno: - they'd have to be VERY bad - as in falling around in the morning pissed

The lads that go from pub to pub every day - seem to be "grand" !!!!!!!!!!

Agreed - if I had gone out 3-4 nights a week skulling wine/beer/spirits whatever - Joe wouldn't have seen anything odd about it. My SIL drinks (well she admits to drinking) about half a bottle of gin a day and (in the K household ) she is a RAVING alcoholic - her husband (Joe's brother) thinks she's the pits - and he's literally in the pub 7 nights a week knocking back pints.. not a thing wrong with that - it's a bizarre attitude and maybe of that generation - the young ones (my sprogs) enjoy a few drinks in the house regularly rather than going out...
At least he HAS accepted young Satz is an addict - otherwise you'd be knocking your head off a brick wall - this way you're both on the same page

You know you could be onto something there,Satz.........my SIL goes down like a felled tree with a chest infection when she has a couple of weeks off.......her job is very stressy and long houred.

The doctor gave me a good old going over. Weird thing was he asked me if I'd had a sort of passing out moment before I fell.......wasn't til I was halfway into town it dawned on me that is because I'm old. After much prodding and poking, stretching and this stress test where I had to push his hand with my feet............ it has been diagnosed as old fashioned lumbago and its severe. See him again after a week of alternating paracetomol and ibuprofen and get plenty of rest . No heavy lifting.
It could be worse, I could be filing.

Thank feck I've been spared any back issues - thanks to lifting weights sporadically over the years.................. I think.

Mother been diagnosed by consultant as having IPF - a lung disease.
Has to have CT scan to determine extent of it - but there is no cure

Cliche alert : Doctors differ etc ......
Jacks the alternative school of thought :

Staying active. Resting for long periods of time is not helpful for those with back pain, so it is important to get on with your life within the limits of your pain.
The prospects for sufferers of lumbago are good provided early treatment is sought and the patient remains as active as possible. It is a well-known fact that weak back and stomach muscles can contribute significantly to the risk of developing back pain. Therefore, it is essential that a programme of moderate exercise to strengthen these muscles is embarked upon.

I fell once on to my back on the stairs - yes in my drinking days - :egad:
I walked for an hour a day and it got better ...........

Thanks satzy yep taking the magnesium and 5htp which is the precursor of tryptophan. Praying it helps soon

Jax sorry about your lumbago. I tend to agree with strength building and movement if pain permits although rest sounds preferable

I didn’t drink more than mr s but because of me we drank daily and i would be swigging in the morning with me coffee then hating myself till lunchtime when another swig was due. Sometimes I wouldn’t drink daily though. For me it was the obsession rather than getting drunk as I rarely if ever did that

100% agree with that - rarely if ever had back ache - when pregnant mainly - and deffo walking helped - but that mad thing I had last year - I did the lie down flat on the floor thingy for 5 mins face down - and then walked and walked - it was fixed - well until the next time haha -- but that's just shagging age - definitely held at bay - there are two women at work - one my age and the other 45 - both look like old grannies -- and yes I'd say they are definitely sore with their backs - but they won't walk across the floor in the library never mind go for a walk - and they just literally get stiffer and stiffer and older and older week by week and I've been biting my tongue off re. doing some exercise - even swimming I know is very good for your back as well...

At the end I definitely drank more than Joe - but like that I was rarely drunk and it was an obsession really - when where what - for the next little session - my guilty little secret --
I think HE quit for several reasons - and certainly as support for me - I didn't ask it - he offered - but he has also said that I think he felt like he was 'getting away with it' in the shadows -- and if I wasn't drinking - his drinking would be more obvious -- does that make sense - reading back it doesn't but I'm too tired to re-type - been out gardening and I'm eXHAUSTED!!!

Evening,
satz123, ahh pet, your poor mammy.

Last time I had a really bad back was when I was pregnant with the son and heir and he laid on the sciatic nerve every now and again.....I would be at about seven months.........I had to get down on all fours and rock backwards and forwards until he shifted.......Jenny was about 18 months and joined in.

No, I'm not allowed to lie in bed 24/7 or going to.......anyway that hurts as well and its a right rigmarole getting up.The big pisser is since I gave up smoking I'm a hundred times more active than ever before. I'll keep moving as I don't want a dowager's hump.

Just book marked this

How to Treat Lumbago or Lower Back Pain - 11 steps

I'd imagine Pilates or Yoga might me nice to stretch your back Jacks.
And swimming as Molls says is supposed to be good too.
Check for classes locally - could be a bit of craic too ?

Thanks love, and everyone for their advice and I'll take it all on board..... but to be truly honest I could do with some gentle hugs. After my account being scammed, coming back from holiday, the stupid fall (and yes I do make jokes about it)but I felt and still feel a complete idiot and to top it off now the back pain. I'm in bits.
