Re: Join up!! Army against the grog !!! May 2018

You had a bad dose there RC..

On the kids drinking, hard to know. Im only about a decade behind you Molly and shots were all the rage in my 20s.
There is a move towards fitness and body image, the latter of course has its own issues. One positive change though is openness - they are certainly not shy about talking about anything, which is good (mostly )

Maybe! cos I got married pretty young those years were taken up with mortgage work and kids and rampant poverty Mary so yeah maybe not typical but I do remember in my late teens going into a pub in crumlin with a GF and we weren't served cos we were women - can only imagine if we'd wanted rounds of shots as well!!!

Morning.
Like you say Molls we had the mortgage by age 20 - and then the kids and the 'rampant poverty' ( love that ) so we never really got to the stage of over indulging.
So that came later for us.
In my late teens - it was out once a week, on Saturday into Dublin City and 4 bottles of beer and maybe a vodka & coke chaser - then off to a nightclub....... Memóries : Gladys Knight

All this before drinking at home became a thing.
I think I read more & more women are presenting with liver disorders in their 40s these days.

Morning,
IamMary.........the doctor went well, back in 4 weeks just for a checkup and can go back to work next week..........but just take it canny and no heavy lifting. Change in anti-depressants.........was hoping to get off them for good but its not to be just yet....these one's will help with my general anxiety.

I had a lovely wee bungalow at 19 with a horrible husband.........but that came later on......one thing sticks in my mind is leaving the local to run back and watch Starsky & Hutch on Saturday and then go back for for the last hour.
It could be worse, I could be filing.

Good morning folks. I’m another one married in early 20’s and yea we didn’t have the money. I think the worst thing to happen to women in this country is the availability and cheapness of wine. When I was young there was a bottle of sherry and port and that was only at Christmas. It’s perceived as being sophisticated, everyone is drinking it so it’s become the norm. However it is alcohol and causes the same health issues.

Glad doctors went well JC and you with the dentist Molly. I made dentist appointment yesterday and must make Doctor one. I know my last few smear tests went to the US to be tested so I guess I should have it re-done. Might leave a few weeks, am sure they are up to their eyes at the moment. Winter seems to be back today but got walk in so all good.

Yep, married and mortgaged young, poor. We did used to have 4 cans of really strong ale on a Friday/Sat though. Special Brew or Tenants Extra You know, the stuff the alkies buy :haha: I am not even sure if they make it now. I remember picking up a can that someone had put their fag out in and just fishing it out and carrying on :egad: To get off hard drugs (heroin) I used whiskey to help me at around 18. Can you tell I wasnt exactly sensible. I am so happy to be free of that shit now. Its been a long time coming

Yep Special Brew / Holsten and finally Satzenbrau in that order as I got older.
Then red wine at home because it was more acceptable and the final sink down to Gin & Slimline tonic from Lidl because gin was less fattening ......:egad:
But basically anything ............... quite fond of the odd brandy & 7UP ( to settle my stomach / hangover) :haha: The fecking excuses .........
It was actually the discovery that a brandy would cure a hangover that heralded my descent down the pit...

Evening folks.

Well, that was a nice summer wasn;t it? Looking forward to 2019's summer. Back to the squall rain and wind, dark clouds and weather's moody blues here. :haha:

Was hoping to start being at the one school FT next week (I am still hoping) went to speak to the HT of the school i'm leaving and she started speaking about w/b 21st May being a difficult one... and suddenly I'm like FFS... just let me fecking go. She'll speak to the other head tomorrow. Hopefully I can leave this friday... but maybe not. Amazing how it makes me feel this negativity. Fingers crossed.

Never married young myself... actually never married... actually still single, .... so if there's a sensitive soul looking for a sensitive soul, give me a call. ... I just thoroughly enjoyed my 20s spending most of the time after 5pm in a bar. It was habit forming. Drinking at home began pretty quick. Like the Doc Satzenbrau, drinking wine seemed what "proper", reputable adults did. So I did that. The whole bottle... plus some extra.

Yes - exactly the same here - well when small kiddies no 'out' even on a Sat.. did love a drink - but I truly could take it or leave it.. until -- until when? I dunno - I really dunno when the thinking about it - the 'when will we have a few?' - planning things around whether its a drinking event (dinner - party - pub with mates) or a non-drinking event - (cinema - polite visits - anywhere that needed driving - cos I was ironically ALWAYS the designated driver) -- I genuinely don't know when that started - I know I was so upset cos I had to stop breastfeeding Joey when I was nearly 40 - I had to have an operation and they recommended I quit it -- I wouldn't have been upset if I was obsessed with drinking -- just must work it out.... -

And you were the complete opposite - and yet we all end up in the same place!!! (here) -- so maybe... if it's to be it's to be...
Tell that nasty one to feck off -- Jilly met a peach of a headmaster down in Sligo - her last placement - but she somehow kept her mouth shut cos too much at stake... feckers...!!!

Jenny's headmaster when she starts at the school she'll be working at used to be in the hospitality business (posh name for pub/clubs/restaurants) and said if she could manage a bar full of women after ladies day at the races then a year 7 physics class will be a doddle.

Evening,
Good news about the docs JC.. onwards. Had you aqua aerobics this week?

Is there a downward drinking pattern for us all here?
I was drinking alone from before I met my husband, didnt marry until my early 30s.. Kept it at bay for a decade, but lots of home drinking and drinking on the sly. And when circumstances wouldn't let me drink, I was planning for it.
So maybe you lot that married young just delayed the inevitable? RC and I were able to get wasted with no responsibilities!
Rustop is right about the cheap wine though.. dont think I would have leaped to gin if there wasn't a decade of the nightly wine habit in the middle.
starty, you were on the hard stuff from early, thats messes with the results of my very analytic study

Morning folks! Yeah thinking on the pattern - when I got a bit older and not as much screaming babies Joe used to make wine and in hindsight it may have been the beginning of drinking without accountability - it was in great big containers so how much we drank wasn't limited by a bottle or finance - yes within that period maybe that changed things - then when the kids became teenagers he stopped making it but I seem to remember that may have been when I consciously started looking for cheaper bigger bottles of wine - I wonder did the problem have a root in the home made wine - that's a long time ago - over 20 years.....but for years and years after that I would have been drinking acceptably if not within normal limits - hmmmm

Howdy all gorgeous morning here

Good morning everyone. Yep the wine has a lot to answer for. It started with a bottle with dinner and progressed from there. Part of it was habit but my downfall was the drinking alone. No problem out with other people and a lot of the time I was the designated driver. Could even drink relatively moderately with hubby but left alone was another story. Sole destroying. Not nice thinking about it but no harm reflecting on it now and again and giving thanks for being where I am today. Speaking of which I should be out in the garden!

It IS all in the past - but yeah - I don't want to ever forget it or minimize it or quirk it at all - I need to 'remember' (like I'd ever truly forget - but the mind plays games..) the chaos it caused to my head and my life..... just not to over dwell on it either!!

and I think it's a HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Miss Máire!!!! happy birthday young'un!!! hope you have a smashing day xxxx
