Two things stood out:
1. “We’re addicted to it without being alcoholics,” [said by a heavy drinker].
...Mental gymnastics if ever i heard them.
2. “We know a third of the people coming into the unit with alcohol-related liver damage do not meet the criteria for alcoholism,” [...] Half of people who drink do it to deal with anxiety and depression, he says.
... funny how the DSM V definition for ED too does not match all those who have an ED - I reckon it's likely similar for AL dependency/ alcoholism? As for dealing with anxiety / depression (or soothing/hiding from negative emotions/feelings) - BINGO! That was me.
