Good morning Army!!
JackieClaire - thanks for the news about Haps. I have wondered from time to time how the Undies are and especially Haps and Tawny were in my thoughts. So glad to hear Haps is fine. I remember she had that amazing henna crown tattoo done on her head. She's a very brave person!
byebyebridgetjones - now that I've my own place and I've an extra room - you can come visit me. I'm about 1/2 hour from the centre of Athens in a lovely quiet neighbourhood. The landlord has a good-sized garden out back that he does little with. It would keep you occupied on days you felt like having a good dig in the earth instead of exploring Greece. Just saying....

Waves to Satzy, Mary, Arsey, Rustyop and Mrs. A, if yer about. And "where the heck are yis?" to Startypants, Molls, KTAB, Tony and others who need get back here posting!

Hope you all have a splendid day!

P.S. satz123 - I woulda called the lazy bums back again in 5 minutes to say I'd just run out of petrol, even if I hadn't. Then driven their car home and left them to themselves.

Evening everyone. Just in from work and waiting for dinner to cook. Another fab day here, love this autumnal weather. Enjoy your cross stitch JC. Good advice to Satz Stirly and you are right, the MIA’s should check in, we miss them.

Morning,
Funnily enough, I'm off to see the practice nurse to get weighed. The last weigh in I was still underweight for my age and height.......so they're keeping an eye on me. Trouble is I feel so much better I'm more active, walk most places and generally moving a lot more so burning the calories like mad.

Extra hour this weekend Going to try and get the little bedroom sorted.

Hopefully you'll be within range Jacks. It's a knock on effect - you lose weight and naturally become more active. No fun lugging a few stone around that your body doesn't need or want hanging from it's bones
And you are probably more aware of what you eat. I know I'm not half as tired since quitting chocolate & sugar laden crap.

Oh enjoy. I'd love a weekend like that. Like minded people.
We had booked to go to Dingle but I decided YS is doing so well - I don't want to abandon him in these critical few weeks.
Also I find it stressful with just MrS alone - he's great for the walking etc but wants to be in pub all night swilling pints - having the 'Craic' - I want an active day , nice dinner and I'm happy.
Doing the whole independent thing and leaving him there sometimes causes friction ..... I don't need it ... no thanks ....

No gain. I'm going to have to put rocks in my pocket.

Here's my rant of the day.........I've cut out most sweet stuff order of the dentist....when I say sweet I mean the obvious like chocolate/sweets/biscuits.........but on orders on the doctor need more fat in my diet.........most foods these days carry the banner low fat, less fat, no fat, only omega oils used on and on and on. I do not have the time or carry a magnifying glass to read the ingredients. I've got rapeseed oil, olive oil, vegetable oil which ones best?......get a fish and chip supper and its fried in olive oil............what happened to beef dripping.

I did say to Mr JC when we were away that after dinner he could have a few...........it had a lovely lounge area.........said I'd bring my crochet. There is no way on this planet that I would sit with a lukewarm tonic water for hours watching him get 'happy' ........those are my rules. Anyway after dinner we were too knackered and too well fed to do anything but lie in front of the TV in the cottage.

And you're right YS needs support these early days. Perhaps in the New Year.

I love it...........we bought Bess a Santa outfit when she came to us.........took us an age managed to get one decent photo then she chewed it to ribbons when we were out.

JackieClaire, If you are eating less starch and more fat, the signals to your body are to burn, not store, fat so that may be part of your inability to gain weight. That is the goal for most people who eat a low-carb, high fat diet – it just doesn’t sound like it is what you are going for right now. Just like farmers fatten cattle by feeding them grain, people get fatter the more starches they eat. If it were me I would go by how I feel, not some metrics derived from a bunch of people who aren’t you!

With heat, it’s safest to use more saturated fats like lard, tallow, coconut oil, duck fat, etc. and if not super-hot, olive or avocado oils are ok. The unsaturated oils oxidize with heat, which is the last thing we want to consume. I avoid veg oils such as corn, soy, rapeseed, peanut, etc. as much as possible.

It’s great to hear that you’re feeling better! Take care, NS

AND - you can still get lard / dripping in most proper butcher shops.
I know here in Ireland it's making a comeback.
Our proper - there - forever - Chip Shops always use lard - it's what gives flavour. It's also the cheapest , not processed and that doesn't suit the ' Healthy oil merchants '

Or good old fashioned full fat butter - on bread ( to fatten you ) with Jam .......

Well... maybe not, I'm afraid :eek-new:. High fat can be ok, high carb can be ok, but better not to have both. It is consuming a lot of fat and sugar/starch at the same time (which is the basis of much of the American diet, and especially treats) that results in all sorts of metabolic derangements. If glucose is present, the fat will be stored (which is good for weight gain) but isn't great metabolically. Nutrition/diet really is a mess, isn't it? Sometimes I wish I had entered a different field (or that what was pounded into my head in the 80s actually had been correct!!). An interesting but long read about the mess we are in is in The Big Fat Surprise by Nina Teicholz | Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet. She also discusses the problems with the industrial seed oils that are ubiquitous in US diets. The situation for you ARMY folks may be better than it is here. I hope so!!
