Re: August Army Thread 2019

Look at the look on Violet's face up there. My childhood dog was a golden labrador who once stole an entire salami from a delivery truck parked in our street and bolted off down the road barely able to balance it between her chops. Mum gave chase for a while then gave up, ran inside and slammed the door shut rather than face the angry providore.
My Golden retriever has eaten an entire basket of Easter eggs with the foil still on them. Nobody realised until I saw several piles glittering in the sunshine on the lawn 2 days later. Not long after I cooked cupcakes from scratch for the school fete then fell asleep (passed out) When I woke up she had jumped up and eaten a perfect arc into the 50 cupcakes on the kitchen counter, wrapping and all. I almost cried because I had to get up with a hangover and cook again at 6am in time for school.

Not sure where the last couple of days went? I vaguely remember the exhaltation my tax refund coming into my account after which time is just a blur of homewares shops.

Also, Tony I am just over three months in now and still get leg cramps. Wonder if it's related to booze, age, gender, genetics? Not sure.

If your 8 year old self met you, would they be proud?

WhenI first decided to quit I was medically supervised. I told my Doctor about the cramps and he said it is almos certainly dehydration. He advised me to drink a least a pint of plain water each day, spread over 2 or 3 glasses and that should reduce or clear it in a few days. I did that and it worked....I'm doing the same now...

Does any one remember that line in the spoof Airline film.... "I think I picked the wrong day to give up drinking".... don't worry I'm not going to have one .... but yesterday was a horrendous day at work all caused by my stupid boss, so today I'mgoing in to tell her what I think and have a serious chat... then Im just about to get ready to go out early to work as I need to do something in town and the phone rings.... Mum's carers...she is 89 and suffering with dementia ...we have carers 3 times a day and the lunch time one called to say she arrived to find a smell of burning coming from the kitchen....Mum had decided to dry the tea towels by putting them in the oven at 400 degrees!!! Sorry Mum I think the time has come to choose your care home....managing this with my sister, from 575 miles away!,, what a great day...

Imagine if you had to deal with all of that with a hangover!!

I'm sorry about your mom. Mine is fading, too, and it is really tough. NS

Re: August Army Thread 2019

Evening.
Had sad news today - my neighbour of 40 years died in the early hours. She'd been fighting the bastard cancer for a number of years.
They are a very private family - and we have just been polite on meeting for years now since the kids grew up.
When they were small she'd let her hair down every so often & we'd all gather in someone's house & get pissed.
RIP Angela xx

tonyniceday welcome back.
My mother also has dementia. She is in a care home and is actually better than she ever was.
She has regular meals , help with personal care, a group of friends, bingo, sing songs, quizes and always someone to talk to,
Not the worst life really ....
When still at home she sat looking at television all day..... and definitely not eating properly. We'd find her food in the bin or hidden in the microwave.

Not as mad as it sounds Tony - my mother used to 'air' clothes that way years ago.

ps Airplane was one of our favourite films in this house.

Well, on the job front, I went in today to be greeted by my boss who said she'd like a quiet word with me in her office....got in there and she told me she was sorry for putting me in such a difficult situation yesterday and thanked me for sorting things out in such a professional manner........
I was totally gobsmacked...she actually used the words "sorry" and "thank-you" in the same sentence....
I didnt even think she KNEW those words.

On the Mum front, we have her on meals from Wiltshire Farm Foods so the carers have told me they only use the microwave, kettle, and toaster so I've had someone go to her house today and remove the cooker fuse from the consumer unit....solves the immediate problem!

Now we will have to start the search for a care home!

I'm sorry so about your mum. Listen to Satz.

NoSugar and your mum too.
Can you explain again the soap thing for Tony's cramps. I forgot all about it. It may be psychosomatic but it works like a dream for me.

satz123.......RIP Angela. Mind yourself in the Penneys rush.

byebyebridgetjones.......any rebate left over for little pressies for me.
When I was a young 'un we had a British bulldog that ate a whole box of chocolates including the cardboard but left the plastic and the strawberry creams.

Jenny's pupils have got their exam results today. The ones they take at 16. She's been more anxious than her kids and they've in her words 'smashed it' :yay:
Great way to end her first year teaching.
It could be worse, I could be filing.

Microwaved tea cloths - mmmmm

Care homes are all wonderful these days. Regulated to an inch of their lives.

I think you picked the best week to be sober ...... you'll be able to look after yer Mammy !!

satz123 Well thanks for the microwave suggestion....I think I'll not think about that one!
JackieClaire ... whats this soap thing? I actually had a better night last night...didn't get to sleep til 3 againbut just before I dropped off felt the leg cramp starting so did the bedroom dance in my boxers (attractive...not) and that went away and then slept until just after 9...much better

Today is a difficult one... I now work 2 late shifts and 3 night shifts each week...finished at 11pm laat night and start at 11pm tonight which gives me an extra day off in a way....lately it has just been extra drinkingtime but I think I'm going to occupy myself by baking a cake...something I started doing last year....nothing near as good as JC's ....just at the tray- bake level at the moment....

Almond and raspberry slice or chocolate brownie...that's the big question while we ponder the care home....

Thanks, JackieClaire. My dad takes care of her 24/7 so as long as he’s ok she is sort of ok.
tonyniceday, the weird soap thing (that works for many!) is to put a small piece of bar soap (the original crazy suggestion was Irish Spring but I’ve used others) under the bottom sheet, towards the bottom of the mattress near your feet. That’s it. Cramps reduced or even gone.

In the nest you posted about that weird feeling at the back of your throat. I had forgotten about that! It almost felt like all feelings of craving were centered there. I wonder if that is a common experience.

I listen to BBC overnight (to be lulled by monotones back to sleep :haha. It is fun when I hear about place and events you guys have mentioned. It’s also interesting to try to understand your politics (don’t even try with ours!!).

Evening All,
I always underestimated the potential care for aging parents. I'm very lucky so far and Mum and Dad are realistic and responsible but the work hours will have to be re-assessed if that changes. Glad you're sober for it Tony. It's a big responsibility

I try to drink more plain water, Tony but I'll be honest, I'm not that keen unless really really thirsty.

Very sorry to hear about your neighbour Satz. It really is a turd of a disease. Poor Angela.

One last day to pull off tomorrow then the weekend at last. I've been setting myself mini cleaning projects of an evening to chip away at it. It feels good to be back to getting the most out of my day rather than just surviving it.
If your 8 year old self met you, would they be proud?
