Don’t Quit by John Greenleaf Whittier

This poem has meant so much to me. It has sustained me throughout my sobriety and my athletic endeavors. I wanted to share it and hope it will resonate with you...

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is strange with its twists and turns
As every one of us sometimes learns
And many a failure comes about
    When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow—
You may succeed with another blow.
Success is failure turned inside out—
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell just how close you are,
    It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit—
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit
Outside of a dog a book is mans best friend. Inside of a dog its too dark to read

My dad quoted that poem to me many times as I was growing up, Techie. That, along with Invictus:

    Invictus
    William Ernest Henley - 1849-1903

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
    For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
    Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Yes, Techie, and best of all, he still is with us as a mostly healthy, active 87-year old full-time caregiver for our mom. Maybe the kind of thinking in those poems helps him. Plus, he is a crusader for the power of forgiveness.
