What about an apartment? Something smaller is bound to come up, a house swap with cash? At least you'd have a few quid to spend on yourselves for the next few years.
Have you ever though about holiday house swaps? It's becoming really popular.

My folks moved after nearly 40 years and never looked back. Same as Molls..
Would you try renting for a year? Your house would cover your rent and then some..

Yep, equity release schemes is what they are over here! Not against them at all. We have no one to leave our house to other than charities so if need be it would be a consideration. We had a guy round today and one last week. 2 others next week to diagnose and quote. It will definitely be in the thousands to resolve the question is how many? One quote we had, was 3 grand that doesn't include redecorating/replacing radiator and skirtings either. . I am not convinced the method they would use would solve it so will see what the guy who came today says. He said he's seen much worse. We would need a damp course installing in the worst room and that will completely need dismantling and replastering. Its a massive job. I dont want to live here forever, but we will need to do it for our own comfort and to sell it if/when we are ready. On the plus side he said our house was in good order and due to its age and the changing weather patterns, rain has got in and up the walls (some of them) one side of the house is OK, the other there are damp patches which gets worse after heavy rain. I do feel better after talking to this guy.

Great news Starts :yay: Peace of mind is worth a lot.
As Mers says don't panic.
A few years ago my bedroom - 2 north facing exterior walls was bloody freezing. Had a corner with damp patch too.

MrS drinks in the local GAA club which comes in handy sometimes.
He knew a lad up there who came & just dry lined the 2 walls - putting up plasterboard with insulation & plastering - not HUGE job or mess - lost about 2 inches in the room but that's ok it's a big room.
It's positively balmy when the heating is on.

they're all big and hairy enough to look after themselves .

It's MrS who has decided he doesn't want to move after all. So I had to come up with a different idea if we are staying put.
I was afraid it was a mad idea. We Irish are scared to death of debt but feck it. Only issue I see is for the 'kids' is I intend living into my 90's. :haha:
These schemes are relatively new I think and I agree they can pull the wool over older people's eyes if they're not careful.
I think they are more regulated now after many horror stories emerged.
We will deffo get independent financial advice before jumping in.

Well Starts - there is NO WAY I'd be worrying about 'riding' damp if I could release the funds from the house to get it fixed at ny cost.
Charity :egad: All for it but you've worked all your life to have your house & live in comfort :thumbsup:.

Problem here as I said is MrS - he doesn't want to move & to be honest I'm tired trying to convince him - it's exhausting on top of all the other stuff going on.
He is the same with anything 'different' suggested.

Usually we're the opposite...Joe loves an adventure whereas I'm not great for change...having said that..this move was my idea really and I truly don't regret it for one tiny second...Best thing ever!

Here Starty...does your house insurance not cover it?

No Molls, unfortunately its classed as wear and tear so insurance doesn't.

In many ways I would love to move. I would like a more modern bungalow thats warmer and easier to manage than this one. We have lived here since 1998 so a good while. Not sure where I would like to go though. In many ways, we are settled, but I do tend to get itchy feet from time to time.

That's it Starts. Same here just want an easier to manage house. We are in a great area area not overlooked. We've been here over 40 years since it was built. The bloody heating system is almost as old :haha: My work is close as is Dublin, my mother & other family.
So just to maintain this house and be able to make improvements would be best now I think.
If we do move eventually - hopefully we'll have added value to it.

Morning! Oh yeah..as well as the adventure of a new place I craved a manageable house. Our Dublin house was built in 80's and despite spending lots on insulation and triple feckin glazing it was still big and rambling...rooms we didn't even go into anymore. The drains were causing trouble and the garden was verging on uncontrollable ...now the house here could have been specifically built for us.. we had to lose a lot of memorabilia (clutter)..but omg it was freeing! I see the family as much as I ever did and tbh I'm not attached to anyone else! Joe is already making friends and we had more kids calling at Halloween than we ever had in almost 50 years in Dublin so he's happy out. I cannot recommend it enough...I shed 20 years of hassles and baggage!!!!

Elsie...indeed..give us a nod...not saying this has happened but in my case..I used to survive the big things (holidays, events, Christmas etc) then congratulate myself with a drink....so no matter where you are with life come and chat... as always said...no judgement xxxxx

Well said Molly. We are all here LC. Morning everyone else.

In the process of decluttering at the moment. Taking some stuff down to cottage so it frees up a lot of space here. Stock piling for skip, very satisfying. Figure when we can no longer manage on our own here it will be sheltered housing or nursing home and house can pay for it. Did not like an apartment in my 30s so would hate it now.

Pain that the insurance won’t cover it Starty. It does seem to be constant maintenance with a house but then you have the luxury of space and a garden. It’s a balancing act.

Grocery shop today so better get my act together.

Hate to live in an apartment. I'd feel I was on me holliers all the time & want to go out to eat every day & wonder where the sun was :haha:

With regard to Nursing Home Rusters - the state pay now. You only use your house as an asset if you have one - which a lot of people don't. But everyone is treated the same now in Private Nursing Homes. You pay % of your assets ( including house if you have one) and the state pays the rest.
So the more you have the more you pay.
So it makes sense to spend all your money & get rid of a house before you get to that stage.

Then you'd have money in the bank & they'd take that. Better off with nothing :haha:
Or sign the house over to someone when the marbles are in danger of being lost - like the farmers do with the farms. Cute hoors !

Good afternoon,
We moved from a big old house (with a lot of persuading from me) to this smaller more modern one.
I am so glad we did as Mr A made it so comfortable and easy to look after, new wooden floors , woodburner, new heating, redecorated throughout etc. Now that I am on my own and am glad of the less cluttered house and feel I can manage it.

Just had a security light put outside the front as I am afraid to come home in the dark, so another step forward.

Managing to do a bit of running again as well.

As Satz said complacency can set in and I have to remind myself not to congratulate myself with a drink. ( I won't )

Hopefully you will get the house sorted Starty--What a nightmare.
