    Re: February Army Thread

    Christ...now I can't keep up...okay . In a nutshell...thankfully Starty explained 'garden'....and Joe's making the pond and Max drinking it.
I thought Mikey was Romanian no?
And I did think you were housing the Ukrainian man....can't understand why there are young Ukrainian men I thought they all had to join army??
    Where's Donadea (spl?) Mary?
Heading to Dublin for the big lunch...even put on make-up

Now I've forgotten everything else to reply to

Oh question for anyone near Dublin North...do ye know a tip-top hairdresser? Went to the one in Skerries I always went to and she's gotten bored and dated and extortionate....don't mind forking out 100 yoyos for smashing cut and blow dry but she was awful feckin ordinary.

I can't make head nor tail of American football Ne ...but went to the one that's like rounders...that was great craic...oh but that was in Canada...

Right that's it or my phone'll go dead

      Afternoon everyone

Think we all need Google to keep up, ha ha. Enjoy your lunch Molly. Sorry no use regarding hairdresser. Go to my neighbour who works from home.

Back on the east coast again, very productive few days, got loads done, hard hike and had a lovely beach walk this morning with the doggies.

Getting a take away tonight, don’t feel like cooking.

Don't let them judge by your age or God knows what you'll end up with.
Dress funkyish & tell them you want funky - NOT boring.

Might do the same myself some day. Bored with my hair & colour. Apparently a bob is for 'ol wans. I think it's too 'set' looking.
Then of course as soon as my hair sticks out I'm freaking so I'll find it hard to change.

There's a hairdresser on tv - Today Show 3.30 - usually on Fridays & she seems great so now I think I'm in a rut. She's in Cork though.
Could go on my free travel pass :haha:
I know exactly what I want...no problem there...just someone to perform it! Peter Marks really aren't great (even on Grafton St!) Used to go to one of those television lads...he had a fancy studio in town....nah...rubbish...I'm fierce fussy...no fear they'd give me an aul wans cut...they wouldn't dare!!
BTW an organised neat little bob is really a bit dated...but get the cut and then scrunch it all over...Great look!! Add a fringe if you fancy...but not neat...neat is for cardigans ;-)

          Good morning everyone

No fear of me becoming a cardigan so, I’m a curly top so my hair does not do neat.

Woke in the middle of the night and could not get back to sleep for ages so I gave the walk a miss this morning. Legs are sore anyways.

Work this morning so better get my act together. Have a great week one and all.

Have a good day at work Rusters -- my hair is neither curly nor straight - it has sort of kinks all over which are HORRIBLE -- but then I discovered the 'scrunch' -- it's magic! just need the cut to go with it now --
Beautiful day down here in Mayo -- sun is blazing so the garden beckons -- my arms are sore from Sat gardening tho so need to ease them out a bit! Where's everyone? very quiet round these parts!

              Morning,
Molly you're spot on.............Mikey came from Romania. He's actually got his own passport. We didn't bring him across to England he was fostered by a lovely couple about 10 miles from us.

I am beyond tired as I watched the Super Bowl.....didn't get to bed until 4am and wide awake as. We're 5/6 hours ahead of the USA. Rihanna was fab. But now I'm beyond tired.
I really need my head examined.
It could be worse, I could be filing.

Back in the day, I used to go to Lunitic Fringe on grafton street. Pre kids + mortgage. And you are post these things now Molly, so it's full circle!

On Yards.. lots of farms where I live and the yard refers to the concrete space where the sheds are or cars/tractors are parked. Or an old unit of measure

If any of you are having a bad day just remember, you could be the tutor in my zoom call who attempted to say 'I can see you nodding' but instead said 'I can see you knobbing'. Thank god my camera and mic were off.

Might give them a go Mary...I'm disillusioned with hairdressers in latter years...am always happy enough to pay top dollar...I only get a cut a couple times a year...but I do expect to get what I ask for...not what they think is right...I'm not a stupid person and know my mind so don't expect to be treated as such

                        Re: February Army Thread

                        Craic, cardigan and knobbing...

I looked up craic, plus it was in the Outlander books, can guess that cardigan means based on context and I luv it so much. I mean, who doesn't love a good cardigan, if you're in your 80s? Knobbing? I can guess, because 'knob' can mean the head of the boy parts. But is knobbing something else entirely?

I'm sticking with yard as something I have to mow, (or ignore) and garden is something I have to weed. Seems like a good distinction, as far as I'm concerned. The yard, as a form of measurement, embarrasses me. Never the less, we stick to our antique measurements and I still have to feckin' look up celsius... At least yard and meter are close. And mile vs. kilometer are relatively easy to figure out, in general.

JC, I think it was your assignment that I read up on Hadrian's Wall. And I have! And I'm intrigued. Also, it's pretty amazing that you're helping out a young man from Ukraine. I mean, I don't want to get into the politics of it all, because it's so different there than here. (For example, we don't have free health care, or help, or anything to offer, except, in many cases, hostility and detention centers. so there's that.) I'm geographically removed from the areas of the US that deal with refugees or migrants... And you know the saying. A hundred miles in the US is like a hundred years in Europe. It means nothing. I could drive a hundred miles and not leave my state, much less my region. The borders are a thousand miles from me. Much beside the point. Good on you, JC. And thank you.

                        I've been a mess.

It's nice to see you back, Battle. I can relate to the sentiment that everything that doesn't work out feels like a personal failure. I have to say, though, that making it to PhD level of anything means that you've overcome your fair share of setbacks... unless you're uniquely unique, you've had more than some hurdles you've just overcome. That said, financial stuff is some of the most challenging, for me.

Oh! And hair! Yes!!! Curly hair I straightened forever. Chopped it off to shoulders, now want it back down my back again, still can't decide to go curly or straight (ha) and it doesn't really matter because I'm barely bathing these days, much less fussing over my hair. Actually bought some really cheap shampoo and conditioner, because if I'm not doing the 'do, I'm not using my $$$ products on it. Ya' know?

back in...whenever. Still loving on all of y'all.

lmao ne your attempts to translate British and Irish to American is admirable and amusing in equal measure - knobbing probably means about what you'd expect from your translation haha. You should try reading some Irvine Welsh - Scottish author who wrote trainspotting - most Brits I know would struggle haha.

I have been through more than my fair share to get as far as PhD but I'm still struggling to process what could have been - I've never once had financial security and it was so damn close, not to mention I don't do well with failure. I've been top of my class for three years (most of that whilst drinking, lord knows how I made it work, but I did), the idea that I can be the best for that long and suddenly not be good enough is hard to process. My supervisor, an amazing woman whose been with me through most of my academic journey, said its mostly luck and who reads your proposal, but it doesn't help.

I'm hoping to get back to day 1 on Wednesday but its not an easy prospect right now. I want to want to do it, I want to be back in that hopeful mindset but the financial situation, the disappointment, and the failure is a lot right now.

battle, I’ve got nothing but platitudes for you. EXCEPT I’m saying the same things to myself, after 30 years of the same old stuff.

Oh! That reminds me! The only thing better than happy words in another language are the swears. Like I hope your child is born naked and toothless… but meaner. Gimme your best.

eta: preferably in Gaelic or whatever the hell y’all speak. And not really mean.

aaargh. I can’t edit. So the reason I remembered about swearing is because in my original post I used the word shit instead of stuff. And then decided not to be rude, but didn’t explain myself.

and to explain myself further, what I was trying to say, Battle, is that I’ve heard it and said it all before, but nothing ever got better by having the next anything. Would that it had. I’d probably still be working on my PhD, but at least I would have graduated from college before I was 40… ha!
