Re: April Army Assembly

Thank you folks. I’m still licking my wounds. I will explain in more detail once I process it all. Essentially, an old college friend (in the finance industry) offered me and Mrs Techie an opportunity to make some quick and sizable investment gains w/ cryptocurrency. I sensed a few red flags so I messaged him and asked how he knew me. He said we graduated from Stanford University together, the correct year, and the nan of our freshman dorm. He said, I understand your asking as this is a trust issue. I felt confident that all that was correct and it was indeed him. We then (me who vowed to protect us from scams) purchased fifteen thousand dollars of bitcoin from a kiosk and had it held in a crypto wallet app. Yesterday afternoon I transferred it. He was then to invest this through his company and cash would be sent to my Zelle account immediately. Nothing happened. Moneys gone. We found out this morning that my old friend had died from a heart attack (this happened while I was in radiation treatment) and how social media accounts had been taken over by hackers and scanners.

We are doing better as I’m beginning to realize that if it is not a blessing, it is a lesson. Truth is, I slept about 1 1/2 hours and sat in the great room all night by the fire. Thanks for being a sounding board. I need to let Cowboys thread know too. I just need to get some much needed rest. The best part is a drink never entered my mind until know but it is not going to happen. I am fortunate and blessed to be able to take the hit financially. Blessings x

Lots of discussions today about AI on the radio. I'm not sure of any of you use Chat gbt, it's utterly amazing! I download code when I'm stuck in work, it will write running programes, official legal letters, recipes, write an essay on yout birth place, you name it, it will do. But apparently its heavily used by criminals for scamming people as it gets all the language and context right. Example: write an email to an old college friend from Stafford and tell him about a business opportunity. And bam.. its perfectly convincing. Then it will ask to respond to techies email.
Nuts.
Ita another layer of phishing that we need anticipate and prepare for, so very sophisticated.
Very bad luck techie, you won't be caught again. If there's any positive outcome of this, your sharing your tale and we will be on our guard now.

Wonderly wagon went on until 1981 apparently sat! Sure I was well into it them. What was the lambert like in school?

Morning all

Yes very interesting, thanks for the update Mary. Think we are all getting them. I got something for Revolut, sounded convincing but I deleted. Only put money into that account as I am using it so they would not have gotten much but still.

Beautiful morning if a little chilly. Dogs walk and now off to do the dreaded grocery shop.

Sympathy Techie -- besides the money I'm sure it made you feel foolish --- doubt if anyone hasn't looked at a scam and nearly gone there.... I had to batter it into my newly vaguely computer literate mammy (12 years ago now ) not to open any emails at all ( we navigated them for her) not to speak to anyone on the phone unless friend or family etc etc...... so it sort of got battered into me at the same time -- ALWAYS suspicious -- and the old cliché -- 'if it sounds to good to be true it probably is!'

however as regards cryptocurrency --- about 3 birthdays ago for Joe my 'midas touch' son asked Joe would he like a gamble with a few Ethereum or a voucher for a holiday break -- Joe thought he'd take the fun of the crypto -- they cost my son 300 euros at the time -- within a year they were worth 8k -- did he sell them? Not at all -- 'oh they'll go higher' says Joe..... slumbering around 1k now -- but the point is -- it was literally a gamble -- a bit of fun -- got stung royally by bank shares back in 2008-9 - lost all our retirement money -- so now the only thing I would buy would be property -- it's all a mugs game!

Very cheesed off sitting here when we should be in our lovely all-inclusive hotel in the Canaries --- nearly had a breakdown about it yesterday... talk about feeling trapped! The dogs alright tho so I s'pose that's all that matters -- doesn't really feel that way at the moment!

How's everyone else?

I am terrified of "investments" or anything I cant see. I have my savings in a simple savings account, low interest, what I see is what I save and premium bonds. I am getting a lump sum for retirement in August, my brother says I need to take advice and invest it or it will be whittled away by inflation. He's right but I just want it to be safe.

Did you really lose ALL your retirement savings Molls? I would have been devastated.

Delighted Max is OK but what a worry he is...

Do I need to look at chat GPT thing?

He's a nightmare:welldone:

We lost our retirement money twice..a good bit previously we had a crooked accountant who fleeced the business out of 200k....2nd time round we just sucked it up...I agree tho...safety or property or land...wouldn't have anything else...not that we have anything in savings obviously..we live on state pensions ...I've a small pension from libraries ..and rent from our Dublin house....it all covers the bills...we don't have to worry day to day but feck all there in an emergency! So let's just pray no emergencies!!!

Dunno bout you Starty but where I am in life last thing I need is ChatGPT!!!!

No ...my mum left us some money so we squirreled that away cos we knew we were skint and too late to start building another pension really...so yup..bought this house ..couldn't have afforded another one in Dublin anyway..besides the fact we wanted to move to the countryside...and Ireland is so small we're only a couple of hours away from family...and loner that I am didn't have any friends outside of work..so it was an easy decision!

WELL DONE Techie...money is only money...forget about the scam....sobriety is priceless xxxx

That was a wise move Molly, buying the house. And brave! But it was definitely the right decision. Do you miss the library at all?
starty, would you invest in your current house with your lump sum? Renovate? Your clearly happy there.
And definitely Google Chat Gbt, it's great craic! You don't download anything, it's a browser.
