What have you replaced your alcohol with?

In rehab. one is warned not to replace one addiction with another.

Obviously one should not replace an addiction to alcohol with an addicton to cocaine. DUH.

Or painkillers, or weed. (showing my age here), or gambling.

An obsession to a hobby, to travel...see Neils travel log, I hope he practices safe sex, to fruit/vegs. are also good.

The votes are not all in (good/bad)on what I have replaced my alcohol additcton with, and you might want to check with your doctor or use your own good sense before trying.

I have found this enormously helpful and I am sure I am not the only one to do so but I thought a thread on this topic might be fun and informative.

    So:
I am now addicted to fine chocolate and very/very strong coffee.
I drink as much coffee as I want, it does not usually keep me awake and I find I look forward to it much like I used to look forward to a drink. I love the buzz and the energy.
I limit the chocolate due to the calories but I like the calming effect and the sweetness and my liver likes it too. My menopausal butt does not.
I also smoke. I ADMIT I SMOKE. I have begun enjoying those little cigars and cutting down on the cigarettes.

In the words of my psychiatrist, it's all better than a bottle of Scotch.

And Rachel, if you're there, please let us know you're O.K.

Great thread. I never liked chocolate or sweets too much, but a good cup of coffee - even a lousy cup of coffee was always heaven to me. I found when I quit drinking I used alcohol to cure the caffeine shakes and used caffeine to wake me up from the alkie sleepy's. Also, they found an extra bump on my EKG that the cardiologist said would go away if I quit the caffeine - so I did. I still love coffee and make VERY strong espresso iced tea all summer - but all decaf. It tastes the same and I love it.

My new addiction took me a few years to develop after going (or trying to) AF. It is exercise. I ride my bike on trails in the woods between 30 and 50 miles a week - weather permitting. It is cold and snowy here in the winter so I ski like a total freak - only started that a few years ago also. And I go to the gym at least twice, hopefully three times every week. Exercise releases my stress, makes me feel good about myself (for about the first time in my life) and is good for my health. I told my shrink it is becoming an addiction for me, and she says it's better than alcohol - just go for it.

I don't think addictions are bad - as long as they are not too chemical or pharmaceutical. Stay away from the bad stuff and we can all find some good stuff. Some of us just have addictive personalities. That can be good.

    Thanks for the great post.
Rest in Peace, Bear. We miss you.

      MWO & food!!!

I've developed an especially sweet tooth which I never really had before, I guess that is due to the lost carbs that were in the alcohol. I need to get a handle on my sugar intake and that is my plan for next week.

I quit smoking too 11 days ago, so at the moment I feel a little out of control as I always seem to be eating.

Alot of my time at the moment has been taken up by preparing for my kitten and now he is here I play with him or just sit watching him. all the time. I'm very grateful for the distraction right now.

I love to cook, I have my one lovely cup of coffee in the morning...and i have an addiction to running. I have also developed a little sweet tooth since quitting, but with the exercise, I dont see it as a problem, and I dont go overboard to often with the cake and ice cream

                  IAD----

For the rest of that poem!

Kitty, -- my Manx just had a litter of three but we lost two, sadly.
Jemimah, who is 3 weeks old today, is just the most glorious little bundle of fur.
There is nothing more beautiful than a kitten, she is just starting to wash her own little face.

I love it that people actually love to cook, I despise it
and view it as a necessary evil.

I will add one addiction to my list, sleep. Deep, refreshing sleep. And riding the river valley trails, Mags, heaven.

                  My Best,
