Obviously one should not replace an addiction to alcohol with an addicton to cocaine. DUH.
Or painkillers, or weed. (showing my age here), or gambling.
An obsession to a hobby, to travel...see Neils travel log, I hope he practices safe sex, to fruit/vegs. are also good.
The votes are not all in (good/bad)on what I have replaced my alcohol additcton with, and you might want to check with your doctor or use your own good sense before trying.
I have found this enormously helpful and I am sure I am not the only one to do so but I thought a thread on this topic might be fun and informative.
So:
I am now addicted to fine chocolate and very/very strong coffee.
I drink as much coffee as I want, it does not usually keep me awake and I find I look forward to it much like I used to look forward to a drink. I love the buzz and the energy.
I limit the chocolate due to the calories but I like the calming effect and the sweetness and my liver likes it too. My menopausal butt does not.
I also smoke. I ADMIT I SMOKE. I have begun enjoying those little cigars and cutting down on the cigarettes.
In the words of my psychiatrist, it's all better than a bottle of Scotch.
And Rachel, if you're there, please let us know you're O.K.
