    Nuts!

Yes, I know we all are... but my question is about which nuts are best. Are peanuts bad for you?

I am a vegetarian, almost vegan, and need some alternative protein sources. (I don't care for beans much, and can't eat soya more than one-two times a week).

Any nutty advice would be appreciated.
    :thanks:

    Nuts!

    Beatle,

I am no nutritionist. I eat what I like but know most nuts are good for you as a source of protein and essential fats.

I love almonds, cashews, macademias and my ALL TIME FAVORITE is pistacios. (sp?)

    I am nutty, too.

    Love,
    Cindi

Find out how they are prepared. I think it should be not roasted. Someone here will know better than me, but I think it is an important factor.

        Nuts!

Beatle- I was a veggie for 16 years of my life...i am not a nutritionist, but I do have some protein knowledge under my belt. (I am also hypoglycemic too....protein is my life!!!)
Peanuts are not bad for you, their are some kinds that are better than others. Peanuts pack a big protein punch in the nut department. Soy nuts though are the highest in protein. Almonds are the best, good source of protein and their oil is very good for you. Some greens like brussel sprouts, spinach and beets offer protein and iron.

        YOU DON"T LIKE BEANS????

Well, do you eat milk products, eggs or fish? For, if not, how do you supplement your diet with enough protein?

When I began my veggie days, I was 14, my mother made me see a nutritionist. She was nervous about my diet and wanted to know what MY body needed. I really would suggest this for you.
Also do you like tempeh, seitan, hummus....or at least....refried beans?
good luck and enjoy your meals!

            Nuts!

Well, I've been a vegetarian for many years, but am just starting to get serious about my own health. I know quite a bit about nutrition, as I'm also raising my children vegetarian (so I had to do the homework for them, if not for me).

My kids get a good, nutritional diet (they are the healthiest kids in their class), because I make sure they do. But they love all kinds of beans and lentils, as well as soya products, most vegetables and fruits, and we bake our own spelt bread.

But beans are unappetizing to me (hummous is ok, also refried beans are tolerable). I love all soya products, but can't eat too much due to a thyroid problem.

I know I heard that peanuts are not so good for you for some reason, but I can't recall why. I can get organic peanut butter, which i love, but wonder if it is actually any good for me or not.

Also, wonder if anyone knows which nuts are the best? I've read a lot of conflicting information, so not sure.

I think you are right about peanuts, Evie.

Also, Almonds are actually a fruit (or the seed of a fruit), not a nut.

                Nuts!

My gym trainer is a nutritionist. My homeopath told me I should avoid dairy so that knocked out the yogurt and cheese the gym guy wanted me to have daily. So he said 20 raw almonds in one serving. Thats a lot of almonds. I asked about peanuts & peanut butter(I like peanut butter on toast with sliced banana) and he said he didn't want me to have that much fat and I'm pretty small. Also if you do the beans and rice, you could add chow-chow or salsa or something to jazz it up.

                  Beatle,

                  This looks good: https://www.mywayout.org/community/f4...oaf-19033.html

Kinda like a lentil meatloaf. There are ways to dress up beans. I was thinking about using
mashed potatoes instead of tofu. Experiment.

Which fruit is it? I aways thought it looked like a peach pit so this makes sense.

Have you tried Ezekial sprouted grain products? I LOVE them. They really stablize my blood sugar too : )

                        Nuts!

There is something about peanuts - something considered a potential toxin - but can't remember what it's called. I think they are okay in moderate amounts. Tho be sure to get organic - conventional peanut crops are laden with pesticides!!!

Walnuts are a most nutritious nut - major omegas. Almonds are second best. Eat both for rounded nutrition.

Ezekial is a brand of sprouted bread products. I love Ezekial tortillas!!

Beatle, you are on the quinoa bandwagon, aren't you?!?! That's the best vegetarian source of protein you're ever gonna find.

                          Nuts!

Thanks for the info MOW-- yes, I'm quite into quinoa, tho my family is not, but they are coming around.

I also realized that I do like lentils (it's just beans that bother me), so I'm going to use more of those.

And I love walnuts-- didn't realize they were so good (maybe because I'm most accustomed to finding them in cakes and cookies?).

As for almonds-- I think I need to increase my marzipan intake.

Oh, and with almonds - get whole and soak overnight. That way their enzymes 'wake up' and they are more digestible and nutritious. Also good if you soak in tamari after water soak to give em great flavor.

I don't think we can get whole raw almonds in the US anymore : ( We could until last year, they were linked with salmonella so now must be steamed (or something like that) before they can be sold.
