    Breaking Other Addictions

    Sugar and L-Glut

    Liv and Bootsie,

Just thought I'd share my experience and information on L-glut:

I have used it religiously for about 9 months now, though I'm not sure it is has been much help for me with the alcohol cravings, and I don't have a sugar problem. It is supposed to be good for you in other ways than cravings, though -- repairing damage done to the stomach by alcohol abuse, and in general good for evening out moods. I do think it may be helpful in the latter way for me.

Important: I found out (from both other sources and my own experience) that you need at least 5-7 grams (yes GRAMS, not milligrams) per serving for it to have a noticeable effect. I take about 6-7 grams of the powder mixed with water (it has little taste, just a bit sweet) every morning on an empty stomach (and wait at least a half hour to eat). I understand it to be safe in daily dosages of 15 grams per day or even more. (a bit pricey, though!)

I don't know many people who have found it to help with alcohol cravings (tho it is supposed to do), but I do know several people who say it has helped the sugar craving.
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life... And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Well, I am addicted to spinach leaves and cheese. Not cheddar cheese, but Edam and Jarlsberg.

I am not lying. I eat a spinach and cheese salad for breakfast, lunch, and a snack.

I am also addicted to this website. Probably so much that is is unhealthy. No offense to anyone either. I thank RJ completely for helping me get sober - but I am addicted. (Healthier than drinking tho.)

          Can I have 2, please?

Sugar - so I'll be starting to kick that tomorrow - well why not right now?

and the other...I think I have become a workaholic!!! seriously I was one before I was an alcoholic and now I see all the old patterns emerging - only thing is right now I'm not actually employed. So I have been fixing up my parents place - always in motion. forgotten how to sleep normally, can't sit still to read...no idea what to do about this one...

But I have been AF for nearly 4 months

          and now I'm off...

I might need some "tough love" in this thread. I have a feeling miss Liv isn't going to fair so well in the abs area with this addiction!!
Oh you wretched thing...a Coke addiction. *i* think soda is a lot more benign than AL...but the high fructose corn syrup does not get any points. There is a soft drink called Jones...no kidding...that still uses regular cane syrup.

            Welcome to Jones Soda

Janice, I too, am consuming WAY more coffee. I would like to tone it down for sure, but don't know how. I went from 2 cups, maybe 3 a day to like 7-8 a day. Pretty strong ones too. I pound back the water to try to counteract the effects of the caffeine. I brush my teeth a few times a day because I don't want that God awful stale coffee breath or stained teeth.

I guess this will be something I need to work on.

I really dislike tea. It dries my mouth out. However, I did buy some Chai Tea to try, and I really like it. I am trying to drink that once in a while as a replacement, without the sugar/honey you are to add.

I am glad I never really have craved sugar.

Beatle - I am going to try GRAMS of L-Glut -- as I have been taking 6000 mg per day with NO notable effect. Where do you buy the powder form???? I have taken tyrosine like that - and really see the difference compared to the caps of mgs. Makes sense to me.

Fla Boy -- I have see the Jones brand. I try it if I'm going to allow something sweet! Thanks as always - you are right up there with Det as a nutritional guru.

Today I feel a little shift in my desire to drop this sugar consumption. You know that little shift in the brain? Just like when you get the "resolve" to stop drinking or smoking. Lets hope it helps me string together some days. Thats what I need.

News, News, News -- I am with you on this one. I could give you my favorite web sites for new you won't read anywhere else!!!!! :H :H :H

And coffee isn't out of control for me, but I drink more than I should ... and work - OH I'M NOT ADDICTED to THAT!!!! I'd like to sell my work to somebody else!! That is such a surprise since I am so COMPULSIVE about everything else!!!

Gotta go - exercise ... now thats something I wish I was addicted to.

                      Liv,

I am no nutrition guru...more of a :nutso: but I am not buying any more products with high fructose corn syrup. Ditto for highly processed foods with lot of additives you cannot pronounce. That stuff has turned us into a nation of lard azzes.

This is scaring my BGP off me! Is my gingerale craving the start of a sugar fest? I do not have caffeine or nicotine or pills (gosh after that tranq the other night , no way - I still haven't located my shoes)

Someone (florida boy?) said you can get L-Glutamine in Wal-Mart in the fitness area in bulk powder.

Hey Liv, what a great thread. Mr. Doggy quit smoking a few years ago, then got on my butt to quit smoking which I did 15+ months ago. (shamelessly patting myself on the back - never thought I could do it!!). At that time, my drinking was already bad, but it really spun out of control and got worse - which is hard for me to imagine. So alcohol is my #2 that I'm tackling.

Since we don't have to put names on things, this is the first time I will mention here on the public forum that Mr. Doggy has also (finally) given up a second vice. I feel so much stronger in my alcohol quit at 11 days AF (and going for the lifetime version of the AF plan!) because he is also giving up a vice with me.

On the sugar front - I have to watch that one too. The best thing I've found to beat the cravings is not eating any sugar at all. I'm also careful with artificially sweetened things - they seem to bring on a "give me more" reaction just like real sugar. I'm also trying to eat at least 3 meals every day, and even better days are when I keep those meals small and have a snack or two in between. Keeping the blood sugar level is key to managing the cravings, and also for insulin health / avoiding diabetes. I have no idea if it it is really helping or not, but I recently started taking 1,000 mg of Cinnamin in capsule form twice a day with meals. Supposedly cinnamin - whether in your food or as a separate capsule is helpful in keeping blood sugar levels under control.

So here's to giving up alcohol, cigarettes and sugar! I'm addicted to MWO but I'm not quittin' that!!

ETA: Florida Boy, thanks for the link to that on-line store with good prices and good shipping policy! I'll be using that one.
