    Breaking Other Addictions

The internet, esp MWO. I used to avoid the computer. It has taken over my previous obsession with mystery novels and the newspaper (I even read the want ads lost and found columns and for sale even though I do not need or want to buy anything). I also when I travel or camp don't miss the newspaper and say I'm going to read less when I get home and get something else done but... Now when getting on the computer I get sidetracked on all the yahoo news stories! I also do best if I can avoid sugar. If I start, I would eat the whole cake Barbi. Have you read the nicotine-alcohol thread? I gave up cigs years ago, developed a drinking problem to replace, then after about 6-7 years picked up cigs again and kept them both! Quit cigs a couple months ago, thanks to pneumonia!

Good thread! 6-7 grams of L-GLut?? So am I just wasting time/ money on the 2000mg per the plan? More input please! What about Gaba?

I am trying hard to not to pick up a new bad habit, but historically have--eating disorder, smoking, lots of working out, binge drinking, workaholic, rich foods, drinking daily... Am definately craving sugar since reducing AL. (Is pure Carrot juice a bad one to pick up?)

Does anyone know anything about SAMe? I've been told before I have a chemical imbalance, probably a relative to why I drink so am curoius about this. THANKS!

hi givingitago, I take approx 5 grams per day of L-glutamine as a daily "maintenance" level but you may indeed need to take twice that to fend off a bad craving. Good news is that it works in 15 minutes or so, and it's not toxic in even greater amounts.

Carrot juice beats the heck out of soda pop!

Sam-e is great stuff but to get it from a reputable source it's pretty expensive...look out for scams from generic small time outfits as I understand it's being faked quite a bit. Sorry I don't know what brands to suggest besides GNC (the one I get that's really expensive).
Do they have a SAM-e at the MWO store these days? I should check.....

I'm sure they are well made if RJ is promoting them. the "true calm" looks interesting too.

I like True Calm (though I double the dose and add some more valerian, too.)

Tak L-glut at least 5 grams at a time (on an empty stomach). The powdered form, dissolved in water, is best.

SAMe is indeed expensive. It works great for some people, but don't even try it if you are bi-polar, or suspect you might be. Also, DON'T mix with anti-dep drugs! (And yes, I think you can trust anything sold on this site. Not just trust, but in some cases it is far superior to anything you get elsewhere, as in the case of kudzu).

Lithium orotate is great for depression, calming, anxiety, and no side effects and inexpensive. It works for many people, although some say it makes them sleepy. I take it religiously at night. It has helped me tremendously with both sleep and evening out moods.

I have some Gaba. It's supposed to be good for moods, but I haven't used it enough to know.

Yes, carrot juice is better than soda, but it does have a lot of natural sugars. Beet juice and other vegetable juices are supposed to be better.
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life... And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

After 14 days - I only had sugar ONE evening!! (Pie). However - yesterday I bought some sugar free candy and it set off a trigger and I ate a TON!! What's up with that??!! :H
              Experience anyone??

I'm off and running with another 2 week goal of NO SUGAR! Maybe at somepoint I will get used to not having it!!

For lots of folks, artificial sweetners can trigger in insulin response like actual sugar. I have experimented quite a bit with this. (not measuring blood sugar levels, but assessing what seems to trigger more craving) I find that sweeteners such as Sweet 'n' low and even Splenda tend to produce cravings for more. I do much better making things with Stevia (a natural substance rather than chemically altered substance). I can't say that I have eliminated sweeteners (even the bad ones for me) altogether...but I really do try to keep them to a minimum or I spin out of sweet craving control.

Based on what I've seen / read over the years, this can vary quite a bit from person to person - I suppose based on overall body functioning - especially insulin production / effectiveness.

That's my two cents anyway, but I ain't no doctah!!

Thanks for the info DG - it makes sense as my body reacted exactly as if I had been eating sugar! I think I even felt like my Blood Surgar dropped - don't know if I was imagining things.

I'd better just stay away. I have used Stevia in the past - I'll have to try that again and see what it does to me!
