LOL - I'm a salty snack girl myself, and would run off and hide with the bowl of chips rather than the bowl of candy myself. Cake or Pizza? Pizza. Popcorn or Gummy Bears? Popcorn.
Besides the high carbs (a problem for some of us re: the potato part) and being high in salt (a different problem that is a bigger problem for some than others) I agree with Louise that the KIND of fat that is used in these salty snacks is probably the biggest issue. Transfats / hydrogenated fats are the problem fats IMO.
As a salty snack girl who needs to watch carbs, who wants to avoid the bad oils, and consume the good fats (olive oil, coconut oil, and yes..even butter!), and be somewhat moderate on the salt....... I like getting raw sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. I'll like 'em raw as they are, but you can also toast them yourself with the oil of your choice and the amount of salt of your choice. I also buy raw nuts like Almonds - same deal.
If you are concerned about yeast related issues, keep raw nuts and seeds in the freezer until you are ready to consume them - they can develop mold that you can't see, but that is bad for you. (or at least I believe what I've read about that)
Yep. I miss potato chips and ESPECIALLY cheese curls. And when I was drinking I lost my head most of the time over those items. Just wanted to suggest an alternative that works for me.
On the subject of fat in the diet - what's good and what's bad and how much is too much, opinions vary widely. This book is not so much a "diet" book as it is a book that reviews history and the many scientific studies that have been produced over time, and also the politics of food - i.e. FOLLOW THE MONEY!
I need to go to Trader Joe's and stock up on my dwindling supply of nuts.

It's not just the fat: it's the frying. Some oils are much worse than others but high heat frying will turn the molecules of fats which normally have an "S" shape into a "Z" shape This is a problem because this particular type of molecule is what cells use the make new cell walls. So, if your cells are using "Z" shapes you're getting defective cell walls which are easy targets for cancer cells to take over.
so, the answer is nothing fried..... has anyone found a tasty baked chip?? :H
