    L-Tryptophan??

Possible side effects that have been noted to occur during 5-HTP (Tryptophan) administration include anxiety, digestive upset, headache, lethargy, muscle pain, gastrointestinal symptoms, inability to sleep, and nausea.

Personally, I have the side effect of wild, almost hallucinatory dreams. But I need to give a try at taking it in the earlier in the evening.

      L-Tryptophan??

Fickle-- In "Seven Weeks to Sobriety", it is recommended to take 500mg tryptophan (or 50mg 5-HTP) a couple hours after dinner, and 3-6mg melatonin right at bedtime (together with 50-100mg lithium orotate, optional).

              L-Tryptophan??

Thought I'd give this thread a bump up - really interesting to read about everyone's experience with L-Tryptophan & 5-HTP. As I start my AF journey (Again!) I'm reviewing my vits/supps. Beatle mentioned that Nancy had bumped up a different thread that RJ had done on these amino acids. Is it in this section?? If so, I'm missing it - sorry, the fog hasn't lifted yet (day3!!).

              thanks, Janice

                L-Tryptophan??

Here's what I found out in the internet
5 HTP is the metabolic precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Tryptophane, an essential amino acid, is metabolized into 5-HTP by the body. 5 HTP is in turn, converted into the neurotransmitter Serotonin. Serotonin is responsible for mood, hunger and sleep. Antidepressant drugs approved by the FDA, including selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI's) such as Prozac, are said to work by increasing the amount of serotonin available to the brain. 5 HTP, therefore, may for some individuals, serve as a natural alternative to some prescription SSRI type drugs like Prozac.
I checked at the local Whole Foods, where Nature Way brand is sold in 50 mg. 60 caps for 16.99, so I am going to check it out. Along with the kazdu it may help. I am needing help and fortunatley do have health ins, but losing my docs due to changes in my health plan. Thank God I have a job. Hubbie still very ill. Hope he stays with us. He is a Jonestown survivor and the news is blasting the 30 year anniv. How sick is that? I keep the TV off and play music. Thanks to all of you for your support.

                  L-Tryptophan??

This is a fascinating thread. I have a question about amino acids. A nutritionist friend of mine was skeptical about my taking 5Htp, and she said that if you take one amino acid, you throw off the balance of amino acids in your body and interfere with your body's use of food...Does that make any sense? Is it okay, for example, to take LGlut, but not any other aminos? Or might that cause you to have an "imbalance"? Obviously, I am not the least bit scientifically minded, since I'm having trouble even wording the question!

                    L-Tryptophan??

This thread has been very educating to me.. I ordered L-T and Kazdu today. I feel these are a good combo for me. I've noticed that alot of you talk about Dr.s. I have not been to a Dr. to talk about any of this. I do not feel comfortable since the Dr. is in the same office that I take my kids to. (they are a husband and wife team). I figure they are not meds and I'm not taking any other medication. so what the heck...compared to half the other things I've put in my system.....

I know I have to find the right sup to help me thru this....something that is going to calm me when I know it's gonna be crazy....which reminds me....the gaba seems to give anxiety instead of heal it.
                    :thanks:

                      L-Tryptophan??

JAMMS, maybe you need to decrease your GABA dosage a little. Experiment with it. Also, I highly recommend taking Taurine and vit C and vit B with it. The vitamins help the GABA to be absorbed and the Taurine is calming.

If you have True Calm from this site, you might want to try that. I double it (which gives me 400mg GABA, and 400mg of Taurine) and take a vitamin C with it (don't need the B, because it's included in the True Calm). This is a very nice combination for me.

I actually am not taking Gaba, I was saying because I heard it. I am still waiting for the sups I ordered.

                          L-Tryptophan??

                          Hi guys
I started taking it at the beginning of November and I love it. It makes me calm and happy and no anxiety at all. I am taking a combination of 5-Htp and L-tryp and Vit B3 and Vit B 6 - its called sero tonic (for obvious reasons) and its only NZ$30 for 60 tablets. There is only 25mg of 5Htp in each does so it doesn make you sleepy during the day and I have no trouble sleeping anyway. I think this has been the missing link for me previously.

                            L-Tryptophan??

JAMM, re: GABA-- it is supposed to be highly calming, not give anxiety, but I think some people are taking it in too high doses. Also, the combinations seem to work better than GABA alone. As for price, the True Calm is only $US 14.98 for 100 capsules-- not so bad. And vit C can be had cheaply anywhere.

btw, this GABA stuff is really not the subject of this thread, but I hope everyone knows that both GABA and L-tryp/5-HTP can be taken-- it's not one or the other. I would suggest a routine with the l-tryp/5HTP and then the GABA (True Calm) on an as-needed basis.

                              L-Tryptophan??

OH THANK YOU - THANK YOU. I went to my doctors demanding prozac. Did not get it. Have had it before and took too many, combined with drink!!!! He remembered!!! Overall opinion, made me more bloody depressed. So I read with interest the l-tyrosine thread. I have got some and also take it (when being amazingly organized and not bullshitting myself) with Serotone 5HTP, combined with Thiamine and a super b complex, milk thistle and vitamin c. Now I know it works, because it has helped me, also before I forget OMEGA 3,6 and 9 oils. Also use wheatgrass, spirulina, chlorella or supergreens by UDOS who also does amazing omega oils. Now my proof would be, that once upon a time I was diagnosed with Hep C and Hep B. Got quite ill and did not drink, but did take supplements. My viral load went and I am now clear of the HEP C and have made antibodies for Hep B. Thank you cos I am going to start taking it again and see the results, and this time stick to it. :thanks:

The amino acid Taurine is highly calming (and very inexpensive). I take it together with GABA and True Calm (there is some Taurine in the True Calm, but I take extra) and it is truly very calming... a very noticeable effect.

Also, homeopathic Kali Phos and Mag Phos (both 6x) have almost immediate calming effects-- you dissolve 4 tabs under tongue and within 1-3 minutes your muscles start to relax (from the Mag Phos) and you feel a sense of calmness (Kali Phos)-- this stuff is very inexpensive and non-addictive. I use it every night and never have a problem falling asleep. If I wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep, I take more, and voila!
