Maddiva, I take milk thistle regularly and I used to take valerian to keep me calm (it helped a lot) but I heard that Valerian is bad for the liver, so I stopped. Do you know any more about this?

Evie.lou, if you don't mind, could you please start a new thread on the gemstones (I think we have asked for this before!)-- I know you have so much to offer on this subject (and so many more!).

          Essential Oils

          Dear Beatle

I have never taken Valerian tablets. I have not found any clinical evidence to suggest that it is toxic to the liver. It tends to cause dizziness, and mild depression and can cause stomach upsets in certain people if too much is ingested. There is nothing to suggest it is toxic to the liver, but I stand to be corrected. The essential oil would work just as well as the tablets. Like with everything, moderation is the key. Do not go out and take the entire bottle, cos I am sure you would have many major problems. The essential oil mixed with lavender in a ratio: of 10 mls carrier oil, such as grapeseed, sweet almond or just your plain old vegetable oil that you use to cook with, to 4 drops valerian to 2 drops Lavender would have a major relaxing and destressing effect on mind, body and spirit. IT TAKES UP TO SIX HOURS FOR THE BLEND TO ENTER THE BLOODSTREAM VIA THE SKIN AND THIS APPLIES TO ALL TOPICAL APPLICATIONS OF A BLEND!!! So do not wash off. Also, would be best to avoid stimulants such as coffee, tea, nicotine, ALCOHOL. Certain oils can heighten the effect of alcohol, making you more vulnerable. And whilst we are at it. Thank you Beatle for it was you who said go the the Holistic site on this website and I did and my passions were stirred. Milk Thistle is a wonder herb and is phenominal in the treatment of Alcoholism as it encourages rejuvination of the liver. You know it is funny, but I loved my work as an Aromatherapist, and I mean loved it. I found my niche. You know how life is tho, shit happens and drink causes problems. I only began to drink heavily after my sister's murder (and I am sure you are all sick of hearing it) but I used to be awake at night until 3 pm thinking Hannibal the Cannibal was coming after me as some of her body parts were taken away as a trophy. Now why did I not use the oils?? Well, it was because I only took up this course after her murder in order to 'stay sane'. But I failed albeit temporarily. Guess what? As a therapist and as a human I failed to fully understand the drinking problem. To my mind, at the time it was a case of 'just stop'. Until, I began to drink daily and tried to quit. So long term, one day I will be a better therapist, because I now truly understand the issues which make a soul drink alcohol. So maybe things happen for a reason. And as for the dog which I put to sleep. That was quite a profound awakening, but one I had not fully realised. For I was coiled up in the foetal position in my bed, crying and asking whoever, Why am I here? Then my neighbour knocked on my door within half and hour asking for my help as she had seen me in my whites and presumed I knew. Maybe that was my calling and that is the path I must pursue. But you my little Beatle, also told me to go on this site and again, I found like minded souls who are not just drinkers but are so clever, intelligent and bright and inquisitive and open to suggestion. Which also begs the question, why do so many who are so obviously intelligent, caring, open minded fall foul to this evil called alcohol, cos let's face it is. Yet, all who seem to be affected are very bright, articulate human beings. I do question, for in the question sometimes we stumble on the answer. I felt my soul awaken as I walked in the winter fields today. These essential oils are highly underrated and I could be part of the awakening process, how cool would that be? I have purpose. Sometimes, that is the key, we lose ourselves and lose sight of purpose, however small, we have purpose. We all have keys of wisdom and it is about sharing and tapping into that, well I think so anyway:l:thanks::h

greeneyes, which I have too. I hope you find comfort in this and go and study the oils or the like. There is much to be learned. I am no where near an expert and would recoil if someone threw a fact at me that I had not studied. Do it. Go out and study. But also, for Christmas, and it is to do with your ending statment. There is a towel and it is called ARSE AND FACE plus a soap and I am getting that for my boys. Cos how many times have we been somewhere, used a towel and are not sure where it has been

Thanks for your advice, maddiva, and instructions on the valerian oil. I will definitely try that.

I agree with you about "purpose" being the key -- to self realization and to happiness.

Some people find their "calling" early in life, and then they have so much more energy to spread around. They don't need to look inward so much, they can use their inner wealth and spread it around. They are often the happiest, most content people.

Most people, I think, just get by from day to day, wishing they felt a real purpose-- some people actively search for it, others just feel something missing in their lives, but usually they shove that down inside themselves and try to fill the hole with material things.

I know I am still searching for my purpose and I know I will be a far better, happier person when I find it. But meanwhile, I also try to find purpose in my everyday life (like raising children into decent human beings, caring for the sick and elderly in my family, and just being kind to others).

OOps, sorry, this is definitely thread-jacking here!

You are materialistic and may I say that without being cussed. We can discuss this in depth at a later date, of course if you want to!!!!!!!!!!!! You on the other hand started the thread and therefore, you cannot thread jack, twas your words and wisdom that got us here. You make me laugh. Not sure as yet where you are coming from. Let me know:l:h

someone I trust just emailed this to me today. interesting.

                            Quality of Essential Oils

This is a very informative recording that says it all about the quality and purity of Young Living's essential oils from an independent researcher.

You will hear Dr. James Kababick from one of the independent testing labs that tests Young Living essential oils speak on this subject. He clearly points out the truth about what’s going on in the world of essential oils and what to be aware of. It's so important to know about the compromises that are being made by most of the essential oil and aromatherapy companies in the market today. Companies that have standards even close to those YL maintains are quite few and far between. You need to hear about the hazards that can come from the use of impure and adulterated essentials oils. Please be sure to educate others about this as well!

This recording is about 15 minutes and is really worth listening to! It's an mp3 format.

“I expect that essential oils may someday prove a vital weapon in the fight against strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Lavender, thyme, and tea-tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) oils have been used for centuries as antiseptics; their chemical compounds appear to kill microbes on contact." Andrew Weil, MD
