    Coffee - elevated liver enzymes

I recently saw a report that had been given on MS NBC about a large study that was done on the relationship of drinking coffee and elevated liver enzymes. It concluded that one cup of coffee per day reduced the risk of cirrhosis by 20% and 4 cups a day reduced it by 80%. Maybe AA has know this all along for there is coffee at every meeting I know of. I also Goggled liver enzymes and coffee and found other interesting results.

Cool, I have elevated liver enzymes and take SAMe. I don't drink much coffee because I have anxiety but this is good to know!

          Evie,
I'm glad to hear that. I had stopped drinking coffee when I was at my worst with alcohol (not sure why), but I have resumed by coffee consumption. I am on cup 2 so I will keep it coming. Thanks for the positive news. K

                Evielou,

Regarding SAMe, there have been many studies proving it's benefits. It is my understanding it is a prescription medication in the UK. I can tell you SAMe has lifted my depression. I have taken St John's Wort and other natural remedies and have never found the benefit I have with SAMe. As a great side benefit this stuff helps my liver instead of harming it like all those prescription antidepressants I took for so many years.

I too have read a few times that coffee is good for the liver. Be warned though that if you are in your first few days of AF, you may want to watch your coffee intake because it can send your blood sugar a little out of whack and cause cravings for some people.

I started SAMe yesterday,so I am hopeful. The woman at the health food store story gave it ALL kinds of praise for many benefits. She did say that you need the coated kind so it is not digested in the stomach..

Should you take SAM-E if you are taking anti-depressants? I take 10mg of Lexapro A DAY...

No you shouldn't, you can get some kind of serotonin overload that can be harmful to your body. I was on Lexapro and it worked well but I couldn't stand the side effects, one of which was an increased desire to drink! I am so happy I switched to SAMe

Very good news - coz I am going to need a LOT of coffee and liquid-substitutes to get through this. Thanks for cheering me up with some good news! The last thing I could have taken right now is a NO COFFEE post.

I have mentioned before about SAMe-- don't take it if you are bipolar (like me). Otherwise, I have heard great things about it from many studies and many real live people.

Coffee-- I love it, but I am such a naturally anxious person that I must limit my intake. I do think you can build up tolerance though (just like to AL, lol).
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life... And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
