Yoga, Qigong, TaiChi....
Yes...breathing while moving in yoga really helps with everything we do in life.
Breath......that's the key in so much we do. Learning to breath in a way that takes all the stress out.
The relaxation in the end is great but not something I can practice on a regular basis like the Breathing.
The final relaxation I can do while lying in bed at night.
If you get into a Asthanga or Vinyasa yoga class you will become strong and eventually wish you could make it a daily ritual.

I have no advice here, having not tried any... BUT I have heard that some work well for some people and others for others (WOW, I should get a Nobel prize for that!)
I was told that Quigong would work best for me, but have not found a way to learn it yet (not so easy in the Nordic hinterlands, you see).
Best of luck to you... please try it all and report back (immediately!).Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life... And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

I did qi gong for awhile a few years ago. It definitely improved my health and I lost weight. It might have helped me mentally too, except that I was learning it from a man I was in relationship with, and the relationship was so dysfunctional it certainly hindered any mental/emotional good that I might have gained from the practice!!FINALLY -- I'm a non-drinker!!

I am just getting started here. I know that one thing that brought me to admit to my AL problem is that I have not been taking care of myself the way I normally do.
I consider myself a yogi and was practicing yoga in my daily life. I have a wonderful yoga studio near me. I was going to yoga classes faithfully 3x per week. When I let that out of my life for the most part my drinking issues increased. So part of my "way out" plan is to commit to yoga again. I'm all about those baby mountain goat steps though so I am going 1x per week and will get back to 3x per week as I build my muscles back up.
The thing about yoga that I love the most is that it exercises the entire body: physical, mental, and spiritual.
What I find that most do not realize about yoga is what is does for the physical body. Until you try it.

My experience....
My thanks to everyone that responded...I'm hoping to connect with others who practice yoga, qigong, tai chi, meditation, and other "alternative" mind body health practices. I've studied and practiced all of the above. I prefer yoga and qigong over the form of tai chi I studied. My dilemma has recently been....I have limited time and try to meditate or do self hynosis daily. I want to lose weight as well as stay AF so go back and forth...should I do cardivascular workouts or what I love....qigong ( I have a foot injury that makes many yoga poses painful). CV workouts used to help my control my stress better but after age 45, qigong became much more centering and helpful. Tonight I started doing some CV exercise and realized it didn't feel right...I switched to qigong and found my answer to my question of what I need right now to become emotionally and physically healthy.
I am also interested in crystal healing and listening to my inner voice. I went to an antique shop a week ago and found a very large raw amethyst
that I was drawn to. I left concerned about the spending the money...but went back later and made a lower offer, The owner met me in the middle and I have my amethyst. I researched the healing properties of this crystal and learned it was originally used by ancient Greeks to help with alcohol related problems!!!! It has a special place beside my bed now and I plan to chip a piece to make a pendant to wear to remind me to make the best choices for me.

Good for you, G! I practice and teach meditation (Vipassana), and consider it a huge part of my own recovery and relapse prevention program. There's good research coming out that supports an approach called Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (primarily involves teaching meditation).
Keep us posted on what you find most helpful in your own recovery, OK?
