    30 Sugar Free Day's

Ewwww, that sounds positively horrid dear LilBit. :b&d:
Thank goodness that is all behind you now. Onward and upward we go.
I haven't fared much better on the AL front. I haven't binged but I also haven't been able to abstain during the week which is my norm
    Lets make September count girls.

Thanks, Deebs! Yes, it's time to dust off the feathers and have another go at it. I'm back to tapering my caffeine and sugar today. I'm appalled at how much caffeine I was consuming during the work project to keep going through 6 am conference calls and late night edits. It was a LOT! It's no wonder I feel like a pile of dog poo right now. I'm also now taking a really good probiotic to combat my Candida colony that was enjoying its feeding frenzy. I considered giving it a name and buying it a leash for walks in the park. :H

I found a good replacement for my slice of wheat toast in the mornings --an over-easy egg, a bit of cheese, bell peppers, onions, a slice of turkey ham, and fresh tomatoes. It's very colorful, flavorful, and filling.

So now, it's a matter of digging in and waiting to feel the good physical effects of the dietary and AF changes. I know they'll come eventually but this is the hard part.

Scrubbs, that's so AWESOME about your 5 lbs! What a triumph!

Cutting back on caffine is hard but the benefits are so worthwhile.
Have you considered changing to decaf whilst cutting back and also using Xylitol or Stevia as a sweetner?
I have taken to having a cup of decaf with a small teaspoon of xylitol as part of my morning ritual. For breakfast I've been enjoying an omelette filled with spinach (from the garden) and a sprinkling of this mock Parmesan cheese I found at the health store. It packs a big flavor but is actually made from a mixture of cashew nuts, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, celery seeds and lecithin powder. It even looks a bit like Parmesan cheese and I snuck some onto the pasta the other day and no one noticed LOL!

          30 Sugar Free Day's

Hi hi, just popped out of lurk mode for a bit.

I just found out that I'm pre-diabetic, and not hormonally challenged as I thought. The Doc recommended a low GL diet, whilst not totally sugar free, seems to be doing the trick and stabilising my moods. Am eating very little wheat or processed foods, and it helps that I'm on a 30 day AF stint (day 10 today). I have to say I feel great, but maybe that's also because Mr Sweats is away this week so the house is very harmonious

          Scrubbly - 5lbs is great

Lilbit - hop right back on the wagon, there's loads of room!

Deebee - does being sugar free alter the effect that alcohol has on you?

          Take care all

          Bets.

Hiya Bets! Congrats on notching up those AF days!
I am sorry to hear about being diagnosed pre-diabetic. Does that mean if you don't change your ways you will become a Type 2 Diabetic?
The up side is that you can now treat it. I was taking a product called Manna tablets which is highly recommended for diabetics -- here's the link if you're interested.

Deebee - does being sugar free alter the effect that alcohol has on you?
I was hoping that the less sugar I ate the less I'd crave AL but alas it hasn't been the case. There are a lot of other factors which i must take into account so i can't really say whether it has or hasn't helped.
I can catagorically tell you that my cravings are at an all time high which is a very unpleasant place to be in:-(

              Hi Dee-Bee,

Yes, if I don't get a grip now, I'm heading for type 2 diabetes. My Dad, his siblings and my Grandad all have it, so it shouldn't be a shocker really.

Do you think maybe its the sugar in the alcohol you're craving? I do have 70% dark chocolate, which is not too bad sugar wise, and seems to do the trick if I'm craving. Hang in there!

                30 Sugar Free Day's

I just received this e-mail from Dr Maury M. Breecher -- isin't the timing of it amazing?!

Go for Slow Carbs, Not No Carbs

Hi, DeeBee, More than any other nutrient, carbohydrates have the greatest impact on your blood sugar and insulin levels. When these levels rise too high, as they do in individuals with insulin resistance and/or diabetes, they disrupt the fine-tuned balance of hormones in your body, even the delicate hormone balance needed for reproduction. The ensuing hormonal changes can wreck one's sense of well being, cause gestational diabetes, and even create havoc with the cycle of ovulation.

That's what research from the famous long running Nurses' Health Study reveals - that carbohydrate choices have a significant influence on fertility. Women who eat too many easily digested carbohydrates ("fast carbs" like white bread, potatoes and sugared sodas or sugared tea) increase the odds that they will find themselves struggling with ovulatory infertility.

As far as gestational diabetes, it is well known that weight gain in excess of what is normal in pregnancy, is a factor in developing that disorder. About 4 percent of all pregnant women develop it, according to the medical literature. Women, who gain excess weight before pregnancy, especially in early adulthood, are at increased risk of gestational diabetes, according to many published studies.

The good news is that weight loss before pregnancy reduces the chances of later developing gestational diabetes. Furthermore, women who choose slowly digested carbs, such as those featured in our low-glycemic recipes, can also improve their fertility.

The more fast carbs in one's diet, the higher the glycemic load (GL) on the digestive, nervous, and hormonal systems. Women in the Nurses' Health Study who were in the highest glycemic load category were 92% more likely to have ovulatory infertility than women in the lowest GL category.

In other words, according to a Newsweek article on the subject, "eating a lot of easily digested carbohydrates increases the odds of ovulatory infertility, while eating more slowly digested carbs decreases the odds."

The Nurses' study revealed that cold breakfast cereals, white rice, and potatoes (all high glycemic foods with fast carbs) were linked with a higher risk of ovulatory infertility. On the other hand slow carbs, including brown rice, whole grain pasta, and dark bread, were linked with greater success in getting pregnant.

In a nutshell, the Nurses' Health Study showed that it wasn't the amount of carbohydrates in the diet that affected fertility; instead it was the quality of those carbohydrates. Eating rapidly digested carbs continually boosts your blood sugar and insulin levels higher thus setting you up for diabetes and reducing a woman's chances of getting pregnant.

On the other hand, eating whole grains, beans, vegetables and whole fruits - all sources of slow carbs can improve ovulation and chances of pregnancy according to the study. Furthermore, as we have mentioned previously, a low glycemic lifestyle will serve to stabilize blood sugars, helping you lose weight if you need to, and, according to epidemiological studies of peoples who live a natural low glycemic lifestyle, also reduces acne problems. Low glycemic foods also help you think clearer and feel more energetic.

Google virgin coconut oil and candida. It is a natural antifungal and kills candida. Sugar and AL cravings go away.

And it can assist in weight loss...

Research also shows that these medium-chain fatty acids boost the body's metabolism, raises the body's temperature, and help provide greater energy, all of which can lead to weight loss. They have anti-tumor and immune system supporting properties as well.

                      The Candida Diet
It’s important to take it slow when starting a candida diet. Only after all forms of sugar and high carbohydrates are eliminated should coconut oil be added into the program.
Start with small doses. Eat it along with other foods instead of on an empty stomach.

Coconut oil is sometimes too powerful as a natural cure for candida overgrowth! It can cause what is known as a 'Herxheimer reaction', or a 'healing crisis', or 'die-off symptoms'.
                      “Whaaa?”

You heard right! Here’s the scoop. The healing crisis (Herxheimer reaction, die-off) is caused by the rapid killing of these microorganisms and subsequent absorption of large quantities of yeast toxins. Yuck! That’s where the term “die off” comes from.

Taking too large a dose of any anti-fungal food (coconut oil, cloves, fresh garlic, etc.) can cause die-off symptoms. It means you may feel worse before you feel better.

So remember, start small, and work your way up. You can begin with one teaspoon of coconut oil, added to your food (melt it over steamed vegetables with a sprinkle of sea salt, or stir into a warm bowl of soup). Work your way up to three, four or even five tablespoons of coconut oil per day as a natural remedy for candida.

Not everyone experiences die-off reactions. It depends on the individual’s constitution and the level of candida overgrowth.

When I first quit drinking I realized I had Candida overgrowth symptoms in spades. I followed the Phase I protocol from WholeApproach.com, Natural Candida Treatment - Systemic Yeast Infection and Candida Diet Recipes, Forums and Products including the anti-candida supplements bought from them, and also the anti-candida diet. Thankfully, my symptoms subsided completely after about 3 or 4 months. That web site has a lot of good info especially if you think a candida problem is really deeply imbedded / long term.

                          Mean time...

I've let sugar start creeping back into my life and that is not good!! So I'm hoping the Sugar Free team is planning SFness for October. If so, I need to join you and stop this creep in it's tracks.

                              Aloha All:

I read part of this thread two days ago and decided I needed to go for it as I also stop drinking. The more I drink, the more I crave sugar, and I think I have a huge problem on my hands with the Candida issue. I was on a bit of a binge and after I read the post on Candida symptoms I realized this is my problem.

I'm on day two of AF and SF and for the most part, it's going well. Not tempted with anything except when my husband decided to pour himself a scotch. Thankfully hard alcohol is not my thing!

Has anyone gotten the "Sugarettes" book and is it worth spending the money on? I also notice you are all cutting or trying to cut out coffee. I gave it up for nearly a year and just started drinking it again. Well, ice coffee and only about 1/2 cup with Soy Milk and stevia as my sweetner. Stevia is alright to use and there isn't anything in the booklet that says you have to give up coffee. And I can't find anything that says you can't have Soy Milk. I hate regular!

Is everyone still on the bandwagon or am I too late and should start a new thread? I also have a great hummas recipe if anyone wants it.

                                Welcome Mauigirl,

I know exactly what you mean!
Congrats on notching up those AF and SF days -- respect:-)

I haven't bought the "Sugarette's" book as I was hoping that my local libuary would have it, they don't so I'll probably look at buying it online.

As for the coffee -- sugar and coffee went hand in hand for me which is why I decided to cut it out initially. I am now only allowing myself two cups of weak decaf, with half a spoon of Xylitol.

P.S. I love hummus, please post your recipe:-)

I am definitely still on the bandwagon and would love some support for October. Please feel free to start a new thread if want as it can become tiring for some to have to page through all of this each time:-)
