    IBS Suggestions?

With some AF time under my belt, I'd like to further improve my quality of life. I posted this yesterday, but got timed out and was too sick to recreate the post.

I've had IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) for many years. I remember my first attack around age 8 or 9 (I know what my age was, because my father was still alive), and at least monthly attacks since (during my teens and 20s, more like weekly). For something that poses no real health risks, it is horribly painful. These are the treatments I've tried so far, and I am hoping someone here has other suggestions. (Just had a fairly intense attack Sunday--I'm usually weak and sore for a day or two following.)

**More fiber--I get plenty of dietary fiber and the powder made my stomach hurt.
**Deitary links--I have been unable to find a direct connection with any food or drink. Sometimes fried foods seem to trigger an attack (like french fries), but then other times they don't. The attacks seem to be less frequent since I gave up eating meat in my mid-thirties.
**Belladonna (Rx)--sometimes effective of taken early in an attack, sometimes not.
**Pepto Bismal--not for the usual reasons, but the ingredients seem to lessen the spasms.
**Digestive Advantage (OTC)--I took it for two weeks faithfully and had the attack Sunday.
**Heating pad--This is always effective to lessen the pain while the attack is in progress, and eases the soreness afterwards. Not usually practical to take to work; although I have at times. I always pack it on any vacation.
**Stress--There does seem to be somewhat of a link here.

Thank you for any suggestions! The medical community doesn't take this condition very seriously despite how painful and incapacitating it can be.

i don't have ibs, but i have heard that a mostly plant based diet is helpful for alot of folks with the condition...it looks like yo cut out meat, have you also cut out dairy? yoga, relaxation or gentle exercise?

      IBS Suggestions?

      Hi Maisie,

Just back from my medicine chest. I too still have the occasional bout of IBS.

I was prescribed colofac tablets from the doc. Helped me loads.

I've also found through trial and error I can't drink or eat anything straight out of the fridge.eg. I can't have drinks with ice cubes in.

      Best of luck.

Might be fructose intolerance or fructose malabsorption - it has exactly the same symptoms as IBS but attacks are triggered by eating certain foods that have a high or unbalanced fructose content - it can often be plant/fruit based foods - which is the opposite of what you would expect as these are so good for you - usually. Personally I cannot eat anything in the onion/garlic family, all legumes, apples, melons etc but it also depends on the fructose load of a meal and what else is eaten at the same time - if for example you had a little bit of fructose with something else an attack may not happen and this can cause confusion in trying to figure out which foods trigger the attacks. If you ate an orange for example nothing might happen but if you had a glass of fresh orange juice this would be a much greater fructose load and could trigger an attack. Drinking a glucose drink can counteract the fructose load if you take it in time. Lucozade is really good and anti spasmodic drugs like buscopan/gastro soothe are a god send. You probably should see a dietician/nutritionist who can give you different eating plans to figure out exactly what it is you are allergic to. Wine of course is a big no no.....

Thanks, boozehag. Yes, I used to convince myself that "a little" wine would help the spasms relax. Really stupid. It's just so frustrating because every time I think I've narrowed down the trigger, or found something that works, the next time there is no connection. I tend to think the trigger is a combination of food and stress.

Your suggestions are very much appreciated. I did some reading on colofac on an IBS support site after you posted, Jackie, and it seems to really help a lot of people.

Sorry , I can't help with the IBS, but it seems you have done a lot of research. I don't know anything about it, but I have heard that L-glutamine is good for digestion -- I have no idea how or why.

As for the getting timed out problem -- if you click on "remember me" when you log in, you will not get timed out.

Oh yes I agree with Beatle - the l-glut is great too for digestive issues. I have tried colofac as well and it worked but not as quickly or effectively as the buscopan/gastrosoothe. A couple of times when I had bad attacks and was doubled over in agony I had to go to the A&E and they injected me with buscopan and painkillers at the same time and that worked immediately - mind you it did cost me $75 a visit! So I replicated that myself and if I felt an attack coming on I would take two buscopan and two painkillers and an l- glut as well just in case and that worked a treat every time. But now that I have identified the food groups that cause this problem for me I have not had any attacks at all recently. There is no point in suffering when you dont have to so I would definitely see if you can go to a nutritionist for some testing. BTW well done on your AF days.

Just a thought - Kudzu is from a plant and as such has a fermentable carbohydrate content (fructose, glucose, sucrose) which in a fructose intolerant person like myself causes the gases and cramps as it cannot be digested properly in the gut. I could not take it but took truck loads of l -glut!

I don't have digestive problems, but kudzu did also make me nauseous. I don't recall that L-glut has ever had any side effects on anyone here on MWO -- but then again, L-glut has never had any effect whatsoever on me, good or bad. Still, I take it -- it's supposed to be good for many things.

                    Hey beatle
L glut also burns fat and builds muscle and stops sugar cravings. But you might not have any fat or eat sugar!
I am addicted to l-glut - mentally that is. Oh dear maybe I need help...

Check out virgin coconut oil. Google it. It is a natural antifungal and kills candida yeast that can cause AL/sugar craving. Many other benefits too.
