I haven't read back so maybe these links have been posted already. I just emailed them to Greeny (the person who started this thread) and remembered she had started this. I need to take a look at all the info on here... I didn't realize the thread had grown so much!

            Monsanto rant

I know this is an older thread and maybe this has already been discussed, but I didn't read all of the posts (there's a LOT!)
I read this in an article recently:
"Genetically Modified corn has been engineered in a laboratory to produce pesticides in its own tissue. GMO corn is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency as a pesticide, but is sold unlabeled. Walmart is now selling Monsanto's sweet corn that has been genetically engineered to contain an insecticide, but consumers don't know because it's not labeled. "

I try to not eat wheat or corn, no grains, really. I read "Wheat Belly" by William Davis. Talks about how poisoned Wheat has become over the years! If I want bread, I make it with flax or almond/coconut flour.

                  Monsanto rant

I was catching up the news and came across this story: US farmers challenging Monsanto patent claims appeal to Supreme Court ?€” RT USA It's inconceivable to me that US farmers are being prosecuted by Monsanto for the crime of...ummm...farming. And our courts agreeing...well, that's a whole 'nother conversation. So I decided to pay a visit to Monsanto's website and see what they have to say about all this. Here's what I found.

"We are focused on empowering farmers—large and small—to produce more from their land while conserving more of our world's natural resources such as water and energy. We do this with our leading seed brands in crops like corn, cotton, oilseeds and fruits and vegetables. We also produce leading in-the-seed trait technologies for farmers, which are aimed at protecting their yield, supporting their on-farm efficiency and reducing their on-farm costs."

"Focused on empowering farmers." Really? By patenting seeds and animals and making it illegal to save said seeds or breed said animals. hmmmm...I'm confused. But my favorite line is their reference to "in-the-seed trait" technologies. Oh for God's sake, just say GMO. We aren't stupid.

Sorry, just needed to vent tonight. And as usual, Monsanto is high on my list.

edit: Eve, just went back and read previous posts. Don't know how I missed yours, but it should be required reading for everyone on the planet. Keep up the good work. We need more people like you. Thanks for what you are trying to do.

                      Monsanto rant

A lot of times when an article comes along about GMO, Australia is described as requiring labelling......Ho Ho Ho HA HA. Food Standards Australia and New Zealand apply the same standard as FDA i.e. "no substantial difference". A read on FSANZ website will uncover a page that gives a list of foods exempted from labelling, soy, canola, corn, potatoes, cotton seed oil, rice, lucerne aka alfalfa, sugarbeet aka beetroot.
Strange there is no approval for tomatoes which I think was the first crop given approval in the US.
I asked FSANZ about there "rigorous testing" and was told the companies had to provide detailed reports, I was also told that they maintain the page listing the exemptions "voluntarily" which I guess means it can be taken down at any time.
If you are in Australia you might also like to check out the website of the office of the gene technology regulator and check out the list of the crops being trialled, bananas, sugar cane, and WHEAT " give us this day our daily bread", I don't eat wheat products but many of you might.
Also look at the lists and note the applicants and researchers, it isn't just Monsanto. The CSIRO (no longer an independent body} the Victorian whatever sorry forgotten and have to go soon so not looking it up

BEER etc... Beer has gmo-d corn and wheat and most has corn-syrup even though it's not listed on the label.

Willow - Thanks for this. I just did some research, and wow - you are right. The "no substantial difference" clause made me laugh. How can they even say that with a straight face? I may be mistaken, but I think they take labelling a bit more seriously in Europe. I'm going to check that out.

Isty - I think it's not just beer but all spirits. I recently read an article about GMO wine grapes. Just one more reason, right?

                            Monsanto rant

The original purpose of GM was to allow the spraying of lot's of herbicide. The genetic modification giving the crop plant resistance to the herbicide and the weeds not, so the weeds die. A bottle of roundup will still be labelled as the herbicide being active in the top six inches of the soil implying in my humble opinion that it biodegrades and does not contaminate.
No no no now we have super weeds that have resistance requiring more and more spraying and let's not forget that the crop plant also absorbs the herbicide, which is therefore in every cell. Supposedly safe as the herbicide disrupts a cell pathway we do not have.....ooo but our gut bacteria do have that pathway and all clinical research at present is linking disruption of our guts to disease!
A friend and I recently did a day trip to the Blue Mountains (google if you like) and we trekked, EVERY creek, stream and waterfall had signs saying do not drink this water (it looked beautiful and crystal clear) it is contaminated with herbicides and pesticides.
I have tried to find out how this could happen in an area of high altitude = not run off from other area, relatively low population = not from home gardeners, and relatively low agriculture. Is it coming in in the clouds? I am so glad that I distill all my drinking or cooking water as this is the catchment area fo Sydney where I live.
When Watson and Crick first "discovered" DNA which is responsible not only for form and function of all living beings, there was the belief that one gene would be responsible for one function eg., turning on insulin production or maintaining nerve function.... Now it is known that any one gene may turn on or off as many as four functions. So when these "genetic engineers" introduce a gene to do one thing do they know what the other three things it may do are? Do they know if we can absorb those genes?
I read recently that we are living the third great extinction and I think it may be true.

Willowfrond - in my opinion, we are already seeing the fallout from the herbicides, chemicals, genetic tweaking, etc. I am awed by the fact that 4 of my oldest male friends all have advanced prostate cancer. Wow - they are only in their early 50s, and they all live within miles of each other. Another friend died from leukemia last week. He also lived in the same area. And the stories go on and on. hmmm...not to spread conspiracy theories, but c'mon, something isn't right here. Extinction event, I don't know? But we are certainly doing harm to ourselves and the environment.
