    Monsanto rant

Pretty scary stuff, Determinator, but not surprising. I would say "repulsive" sums it up nicely.

Pauly, aspartame is terribly dangerous. Makes the body acidic which isn't good. My SIL drinks about 10 Diet Pepsi's each day. She recently was diagnosed as having "calcification of the pancreas and liver." Could be a coincidence, but I doubt it. BTW...she doesn't drink ANY alcohol ever. Total teetotaler. But she doesn't believe me when I tell her that her soft drinks are hurting her. Just my 2 cents.

it's not capitalism to blame, i'ts 'crony' capitalism that makes the CEO's of these evil corporations essentially government owned, along with all the protections that evil empire offers.

            Hi Det,
Yes there is hope but ONLY if we can get the notion of "no substantial diference"overturned. There is no point having labeling laws when exemptions are granted under that. C0nnecticut needs to say no exemptions but I am betting they will not.
I have several foods on my no go list and they do not have to be labeled.FSANZ say they "voluntarily" list these so they could just as easily stop listing them. Also with a little more investigation ther are genettically modified "food processing enzymes" which FSANZ does not list at all.
My neighbor here works for the council and every day he sprays glyphosate and sprays and sprays, he wears protective gear, he is told to keep his boots out of his living space. He is just an average guy making a living........how do I tell him he is a criminal?

Willow, you can't. Sorry, but he will only get defensive. I've experienced that many times in my life. So, I think the best thing we can do is lead by example. I recently had to leave my home and move to an apartment, yet I still managed to grow a rather large organic garden in containers. There was some curiosity from my new neighbors. Not a lot, but enough. However, if I reached one or two families, I feel like I did something good. It's a start, right? Maybe we have to begin in our own backyard, and hope that by acting locally, we can somehow have a global effect. Just a thought.

I told him about the signs up in the mountains and he did get a bit concerned about that.
I have started a garden, it's mostly tomatoes, I just don't know enough about gardening, I have carrots growing too but how do I know when to pick them? Capsicums are looking good, herbs are divine, potatoes are on the way. On survival mode I would need much more variety than this. Alone I could probably plant a garden with enough different foods but there are 16 other people here (none of whom do so much as pull a weed) many of whom are salivating over the tomato crop.
It gets back to having the room, having the climate and knowing what you are doing.

Willow - you have a garden!! That is wonderful. Tomatoes are always a good home crop to start with since they rarely disappoint. You'll know when the carrots are ready to be harvested. They start to poke out of the soil. Don't know how to explain it any better than that. I love herbs too and grow them year-round - outside and inside. You live with 16 people? That sounds interesting and lovely. Tell me more. I am interested. You sound committed. The world needs more people like you.

:thanks:for the tip about the carrots.
I only wish here was "lovely" it's actually 18 people, two units downstairs that have their own ablutions and kitchens, the rest of us on two floors with a benchtop stove and a sink in our rooms and shared ablutions. It's kinda heartbreak hotel but hopefully I will leave.
Have you ever been in the chat room here, it used to be good and really active but noone seems to go there anymore

Willow, good points and i have no easy answers. I'd echo Moss by saying we should grow what we can, and for the rest try to buy from local sustainable and trusted sources. our vote in Washington might not mean much anymore, but when we vote with our dollars we can support who we want to win in a meaningful manner (freemarket wise).
on a tangent, check out the TED talk on primitive peoples here: really neat

                        Hi Det,
Local, sustainable and trusted sources are impossible for us city folk even in a city that by comparison to many is as small as Sydney. This is also the thing about growing, many live in apartments and cannot.
It takes seven years for a farm to gain "organic" certification so food supplies would be ??? if everyone wanted organic tomorrow.
The only answer is to pressure governments to ban glyphosate

"I cringe when I buy tofu." Hell, I cringe when I think of ANYONE buying tofu, much less ever putting that nasty, estrogen-producing crap in his mouth!:argh:

I don't know whether to laugh or cry about the posts from folks here who have never been involved in agriculture, and who obviously have no background in science. I don't trust Monsanto, but I sure trust the US DOJ less. As for worrying about plants genetically modified to be Roundup/glyphosphate resistant being a health threat, I am unaware of any evidence beyond rank speculation. USDOJ is a KNOWN threat.

Willow, I have an answer: sprouts. there are dozens of varieties which are very easily grown indoors with a crop cycle from 2 to 8 days. I'm starting some myself. no, that's not the whole diet but it's certainly something to do while we are trying to get some respect from the Gov
