    Monsanto rant

SKendall;905731 wrote: Great thread. My little dog is suffering from horrible skin allergies so I called my pet sitter who is also a pet nutritionist for some advice. Apparently it's the food I am giving her. It's a high end dog food, but she told me that any dog food claiming to include "meat" can use, and does use the meat from euthanized animals.

I also give her chicken jerky, I checked and it's made in China and she told me it could be anything because there are no standards in China but it is not likely to be white chicken jerky at all.

She also mentioned that even Science Diet isn't good and don't buy any pet food from the supermarket.

Her suggestions are: Orijen, Acana and for treats Merrick lamb treats. In my dog's case she suggested Great Life Enzymes and yogurt to boost her immune system.

I thought I was buying the best, but you never know.
I nearly killed my Beagle on Science Diet. That, and you might remember the food recall maybe 4 or 5 years ago that was a result of moldy corn in some dog food brands? (one of our dogs was eating that.) Anyway...that got us started researching dog food. We ended up deciding to go with a raw feeding program which has worked very well for all of our dogs. The old Beagle in particular had major skin problems in addition to his other health issues. He has not had a single "hot spot" on his skin since we changed our feeding that many years ago. The health benefits have been amazing.

A good book (IMO) on this topic is Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats. It's an easy read - a nice starting point to see if this sort of change is something you want to consider.

    Best wishes to you.

Monsanto scares me too. I don't like the control they are getting of our food supply world wide. Patented seeds???? Scary stuff.

Thanks, DG. I cooked her food today, just plain hamburger meat, but beef are corn fed too, so I'm not sure.

I am very interested in the raw food diet - can you direct me? When I lived on Vancouver Island I noticed two of the healthiest dogs I had every seen, alert, shiny coat, etc., they were "old dogs" 12+ and the owners had never fed them anything but "good" food from their own table. They sold their frozen dinners of same.

I tried to put some yogurt in her food today as my pet nutritionist's advice and she is not having any of it, but did dive into the home-cooked hamburger and she hasn't eaten canned food or dry food in about 2 days.

      Thank you for caring.:l

        Hi SKendall,

Regarding raw feeding, do a search for BARF which is Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. Many swear by this protocol. A website that rates traditional dog foods is dogfoodanalysis .com. I feed mainly kibble, stay away from grain and have found the following to be most helpful in selecting a quality food. It contains the criteria and ratings for many popular brands. Hope this helps you. Pie

How to grade your dog's food:

Start with a grade of 100:
        1) For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points
        2) For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points
        3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points
        4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points
        5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. "ground brown rice", "brewer?s rice", "rice flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points
        6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points
        7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points
8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points
        9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points
        10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points
        11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points
        12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points
        13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog is not allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points
        14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog is not allergic to beef), subtract 1 point
        15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point
        Extra Credit:
        1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points
        2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points
        3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points
        4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points
        5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points
        6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points
        7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points
8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points
        9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points
        10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point
        11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point
        12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count "chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein source, but "chicken" and "" as 2 different sources), add 1 point
        13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point
        14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free, add 1 point

What a conspiracy...they create the strain of the swine flu in a lab.....it gets out, then they shove the h1n1 down our throats. It's all about money and power.

Fascinating information. Need to slot some time to check this out more thoroughly. Hubby and I just purchased our first grass feed organic beef in November. We are loving it. Also try to grow our own or purchase locally grown when available. You just can't believe anything they tell you, and almost afraid to know the things they are hiding from us!

not from Monsanto, but from our very own Government. I thought this administrations was supposed to be different. They steal our tax money to give to a marketing organization to get us to buy junkfood being falsely marketed as healthy. This completely infuriates me

Dete, once again we are on the same page. I won't drink milk for this reason, and I avoid corn for similar issues. Plus the health issues. Want to fatten me up, feed me corn. Luckily for my fat ass, there's corn in beef, corn in chicken, corn in milk. Because of corn subsidies, like dairy subsidies, that rule the AG world.

I had a friend who lived on her husband's family dairy in California. I remember one year she complained that the family wasn't legally allowed to drink any of their cows' milk anymore. This had to do with the killing of raw milk in America laws/regs.

Sometimes I wish I was Amish.

Edit: I won't drink pasteurized milk, but I will drink raw.
