    Monsanto rant

I just saw this thread, and I am so grateful to greeneyes for getting this conversation going. I haven't had time to read all the posts yet, but just wanted to add my 2 cents. Frankenfoods scare the hell out of me. The fact that they aren't labeled as such is just plain wrong. But it's Monsanto's "seed police" that really gets me riled up. Prosecuting farmers for saving seed is abominable. Our supreme court justices siding with this practice is a travesty.

That's why I'm an heirloom gardener and seed saver. Monocultures are dangerous. If a Monsanto crop should fail on a wide scale, it could devastate the food supply. (Which is a catch-22 since they have already done that with their genetic tinkering). Can't wait to read through this thread tonight.

Hi, Det. I'm afraid the cat really is out of this bag. It is too late for prevention but action to contain the genes could be taken if people in power chose to do so.

re Monsanto and the escaped GMO wheat.

How in the world does anyone, and I mean anyone, think they can grow wheat in a field as a test and not expect a few birds to fly in, eat some seeds, fly off and shit them somewhere?

Unless the GMO wheat was modified so that its seeds were infertile, its escape was inevitable. (Did anyone ever see Jurassic Park?? :H:H)

                    Just curious.

                    Love,
                    Cindi

great video Nosugar! frankenwheat! jurassic wheat!

my suspicious mind wonders if they let this go on purpose so that lawmakers would be pressured into saying 'what the heck, it's everywhere now' and ok them to use it commercially. hmmmm.
at any rate, since this administration passed the monsanto protection act they have carte blanche to do a lot of very nasty things without fear of prosecution. they sold their souls for a few bucks so that we the people have to eat their high-yield, low-nutrition, GM, roundup-drenched frankenfood.

One solution is to just skip all the grains - we don't need them .

I was wrong -I just read about this:

                            The Monsanto Pig (Patent pending)

The patent applications were published in February 2005 at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in Geneva. A Greenpeace researcher who monitors patent applications, Christoph Then, uncovered the fact that Monsanto is seeking patents not only on methods of breeding, but on actual breeding herds of pigs as well as the offspring that result.

"If these patents are granted, Monsanto can legally prevent breeders and farmers from breeding pigs whose characteristics are described in the patent claims, or force them to pay royalties," says Then. "It's a first step toward the same kind of corporate control of an animal line that Monsanto is aggressively pursuing with various grain and vegetable lines."

So, I guess grains and soybeans might be just the tip of the iceberg!

you are so very right! but with the 'state media' shoving them down our throats it's an uphill battle. there is no such thing as a 'heart healthy whole grain'. it's a dangerously misleading marketing campaign. epidemic levels of diabetes is ok I guess according to the actions of our fearless leaders.
big agriculture loves grain because it's easy to store and transport without damage. it's easy profit compared to high-nutritional density foods like kale or salmon. just follow the dollars....and watch the dollars flow into DC. we must vote with our spending habits. it's the only direct action we can take on the individual level.
