    Monsanto rant

This is a rant about Monsanto, GMO, corn, soy, poisoning and money. Just so you know....Paying out the arse to eat poison, IMHO.

This is from a news article in Frontier Natural Products Co-op.

The Associated Press has obtained confidentila contracts that reveal how Monsanto, the world's largest seed developer, is squeezing out competitors and controlling smaller seed companies to increase its dominance of the miltibillion-dollar biotech industry. Neil Harl, agricultural economist at Iowa State University, describes Monsanto's level of control over seed genetics as "almost unbelievable."

Monsanto's patented genes are being inserted into about 95% of all soybeans and 80% of all corn grown in the US. It's feared the lack of competition in the seed industry could lead to price hikes for "everything form animal feed to wheat bread and cookies." (The price of seeds is already rising - Monsanto increased some corn seed pricess last year by 25% and Monsanto brand soybean seeds went up 28%.

Monsanto's business strategies and licensing agreements are being investigated by US and state justice departments to determine if they violate US antitrust laws. The seed giant's practices are also the basis of civil antitrust suits filed by its competitors. Monsanto acknowledged that US Department of Justice lawyers are seeking documents and interviewing company employees about its marketing practices, but the suburban St. Louis-based agricultural giant says there is "no merit" to allegations about their licensing agreements.

But here is what really gets me. The seeds are genetically modified to be resistant to Roundup, a toxic herbicide. So farmers can spray their crops with this poison and it won't kill the crop but will reduce the weeds. The crops WE evenutally eat. GMO and poison. Thanks a lot. Oh and did I mention who has the patent on Roundup? Monsanto. What can you do? Be choosy at the supermarket. Eat fresh food. Eerything you buy that goes across the scanner is your vote for what the public wants to eat. I llike tortilla chips as much as the next person but knowing that the ingredients started out genetically modified and sprayed with poison will help me say no. I even cringe when I buy tofu.

    End of rant.

Not going to argue about Monsanto and their big business schemes. But I do know for a fact that the corn plant is sprayed way before it develops the actual ear. I know, I know, it is still poison and that is bad, but us small farmers raise crops too, and that's how we make a living. And it's easy to mislead people with only part of the facts.

But LVT, isn't it GMO'd to make it able to withstand spraying by the herbicide Roundup? I have trouble enough with the GMO part but the herbicide too? At least that is how I understood the information I have been reading. I do understand your position as a small farmer and support that. Do you fear you fall prey to Monsanto's tactics like chicken farmers have to Perdue? This probably isn't the place for this. I guess all I'm saying is you are what you eat, so make informed choices.

wow! just finished the last segment of the above video and I can't recommend it enough. I had no idea that fructose (a hepatotoxin) is metabolized in precisely the same way as ethanol by our livers. The explanation of the way our bodies metabolize foods in itself is a fascinating part of the videos. the fact the FDA will do nothing about this is quite an indictment. and people wonder why I don't want this corrupt government running my healthcare system. d-uh!

              Hi Det
I just wanted to thank you for posting that link. I watched the whole thing- completely fascinating and mind boggling. The whole food/politics connection is very real and quite scary. It is about time that people in this country (I include myself here as first in line) are educated as to where their food comes from, what is in it and how it is made. These should be simple, answerable questions- yet they are not. IMHO- since we have always been a 'land of plenty' we have not been made accountable or had to look closely at these questions hence the way we grow/process/distribute/eat food has gotten into the 'wrong' hands. It is no longer primarily about human sustenance, nutrition and pleasure but purely about profitability and volume.
              Thanks again Det-

your welcome Sheepish. I'm going to re watch the whole thing shortly as so much material is covered.

I must find the movie 'food inc'....maybe I can download it somewhere, thanks Greenie.

I think I appreciate Dr Lustig's videos since I love material that gets into the factual scientific facts about things. so much of our news and in fact politics is emotion driven which drives me bonkers.

the sad fact is that this administration, just like all those before will do a big fat nothing about fixing the deception in our agrabusiness because it all boils down to money. Republican or Democrat makes no difference, the real party is the party of greed, power and money.

and so....what do do on a personal level? I'm getting my foods from local organic farms. it's less convenient, but I'm doing it.

I will watch the video but have not yet. We also need to be concerned about the disgusting products that make up most of our pet foods. There are good ones out there and an awareness needs to be created to search them out.
