SAMe as an AD instead of SSRI

Has anyone had any experience with taking SAMe as an anti depressant, and has also at some stage taken an SSRI like prozac or citalopram? (but not taken same and SSRI together) If so, how did you compare the two? I am looking to take a Same instead of prozac as I am of the firm belief that SSRI increase my cravings for AL, but I am really angry depressed person without the help of prozac (which I am currently on) So I would like to try something like SAMe. I have tried most other prescription drugs with varying degrees of success and although prozac works well for depression it is not good for anxiety. I would like to try something more natural also like SAMe. St johns and 5HTp where of no value sadly:upset:

Any information/experience would be greatly valued,

    regards Indy

    Hi Indy,

I have never taken prozac, but I do take Sam E. I took it for awhile then ran out and didn't take it for a couple months. I didn't realize how low I felt until I started taking it again and after about a week or so, I felt that my mood was lighter...if you understand what I mean. I've also taken St. John's wort with no noticeable affect. I am sticking with the Sam E. I have a whole cabinet full of supplements, Omega 3, Vit D, Vit B, Vit C, Milk Thistle, Amino Acid, L-Glut....etc. I wish they would come up with one pill that includes everything. I know RJ has the All in One powder which I haven't tried. Maybe someone could tell me their likes and dislikes about it.

Everything I need is within me!

Hi there Indi and Brite - you might try Rhodiola - try Googling it. I found it to be really good - my daughter also took it - you can get it at Wholefoods. there are a couple of different ones but the one that is best (apparently) is the one that is the most expensive - well, it was when i bought it - there are different strengths of it. Anyway, I found it to be really good.

I have also taken the same and found my moods stabilize very quickly once I started it. Never got on with SSRI's but did take Remeron for about 8 months 5 years ago. Same doesn't help me sleep, but the mood lift is comparable

To answer you brightlite, I've taken all the supplements as well, never taken the All One, as I had a multivit when I first started out. I now have something called Alive Whole Food Energizer. It don't taste too good (I add some fruit juice to it) and is an awful green color, but I eliminate 4 of the supplements and enjoy the energy it provides.

Thanks Bright, Sunshine and kslc, Its great to get some feed back on this subject, I will definately look into SAMe. An all in one would be great! I too have a rather large cabinet of supplements!

I shall buy some and try it and see what happens!

          Regards Indy

I just picked up some SAMe myself. It's only my 2nd day on it (400mg/day) and I can't say I feel anything yet, but they say it can take a week or so to take effect.

Anyhow, the 4th or 5th AF day is usually my sticking point so we'll see if it helps.

I'd recommend SAMe if you think you might have a depression problem.

No side effects at all and my mood can be described as 'brighter' and I'm def more motivated and positive.

That coupled with Kudzu Rescue have been great supporting elements in my recovery.

Oh, I'd suggest the Nature's Made brand of SAM-e. I've read it's remarkably better and of a higher quality.

Last thing, if you use SAM-e make sure you take it with a quality B-vitamin to avoid any heart complications related to homocystine (sp) levels.

Still on it and I really like it. No side effects and all the benefits are still present.

Between the SAM-e, Kudzu Rescue and my new found love for a great night's sleep, I'm feeling better than I have in years.

                        Wow, thats superb!

Do you think you feel a lot better because of less AL intake? I wonder if it would be okay to drop down on prozac and begin on SAMe so as not to completely come off incase of SAMe not working for me, any ideas?

                        regards Indy

Indie - what brand of SAMe are you using? I've tried to find it in health food shops and chemists in Wellington, but I haven't had any luck. I'm keen to try it if I can find it! (I've recently gone back onto Fuoxetine, but last time I was on it I wasn't sure just how much difference it made)

HI Missy B, Just putting my two cents worth in here, if you cant find it in N.Z. you could order it from OZ. Golden Glow direct mail order is a very reputable and excellent provider of vitamins and herbal supps. I have been getting stuff from them for years. Just go online to get their catalogue. I used to take SAMe with GABA and Vitamin B3 - worked very well for me

                              Hey Miss B and Sapphire

Good question Miss B I have had some issues trying to locate it in CHCH too, filthee posted a link amazon.com, alledgedly pretty good quality stuff, and also there is some on this site to, however it would be good to get some closer to home as it would probably be a bit cheaper. Still quality is important too. Thanks Sapphire, I might just give golden glow a whirl and see how we go.

Sorry to hear your needing the prozac Missy B, but at least you are aware and you are here!

                              regards Indy
