Used to use them. Made my own. Never again, it's a waste of calories.

Eat real food! Keeps you satiated longer and is more nutritious than any meal replacement could ever claim to be.

                Meal replacements???? any luck?

I've been pretty much living on Cliff bars when I'm on the road. much better than fast food but they still have way too much simple carbs in them. 'real' foods are often too messy or smelly for me to want to try to eat while driving. so Pretty much I'm thinking on my next road trip (next week) I'll be bringing a variety of nuts and dried fruits. any other ideas? I hate the canned 'mystery meals' and refuse to buy them. it's just creepy somehow. I like to watch StarTrek but don't want to eat that way LOL

Det you can bring some "good" peanut butter and some "good" crackers to make as you go. Even bring along a banana and raisins to jazz it up. Can you bring along a little cooler for fruit?

                  LoOp, is that YOU???

I lost 20 kilos on them once.

Then put the whole bloody lot back on. :H

Choose a nutritious, well researched and advocated diet which is sustainable and creatively tasty.Increase water, fibre and exercise. Decrease saturated trans fats and simple carbs/GI.

Better still, don't go on a 'diet' at all. Change your lifestyle and respect your amazing body.

                    Good luck with it.

                      Meal replacements???? any luck?

Heres a bit a science to back up my opinion that meal replacements are not effective in the long term. Thermogenesis or the energy created by the digestion process, goes out the window when we are drinking our food. This energy process requires about 60% of our calories to work. We are not meant to drink our food. We are meant to eat, chew and digest it (this requires a lot of energy expenditure). When we take thermogenesis out of the equation after a while we are not left with a calorie deficit even though we are in some cases severlely restricting calories. Hence the initial weight loss followed almost invariably by weight gain and more when we finally do go back to chewing and digesting real food. As Bridge said, dont go on a diet, change your lifestyle, respect your body, get more exercise and eat whole foods in sensible proportions.

                        Meal replacements???? any luck?

I use them in a pinch in case i am unable to get to my meal in time. I throw a few into the fridge at the office and keep a cold one at home so if I am running late I can suck part of one down before or after my workout at the gym
I generally prefer real food or the smoothies I make with real food. But life sometimes gets busy. I don't like the bars at all. They all seem way too sweet to me. I am more of a "savory" if you will.
I think they are a good option occasionally.
My sis was on a program where she drank 2 liquid meals/day and one sensible meal. She did lose but gained it all back.
I have lost 33 pounds now in about 3 1/2 months eating well and sensibly but light and exercising EVERY day. It is no longer if but when I will hit the gym.

I do love peanut butter with whole grain crackers and raisins in a pinch. They are easy to stash, especially the raisins which I really need at the gym at times.

hmmm PB and crackers is too messy to actually eat while driving. (bad habit I know but that's what I'm stuck with often).

after spending 1/2 hour in the 'bar' section of whole foods today I finally found one (and only one) without tons of some form of sugar. I just cant believe all the cleverly packaged crap that's on the market. Anway it's the "think thin" bar by thinkproducts.com they are sweetened with malitol and contain between 15 and 20 grams of protein which is very good. and perhaps most importantly they taste decent with a pleasant texture.

also tonight I found a bar being sold by Dr Mercola which sounds very promising. will order up a box and see how goes...

Well done Sunny on your weight loss! I think that in a pinch they can be used and just before or after exercise as you mentioned is a good idea. I advise my clients to do just that, so that they arent working out with an empty stomach. And you are right, the exercise needs to be every day for weight loss and not just 3-4 x week as recommended by the Heart Foundation. The 1/2 hour 3 - 4 x week is o.k. for maintaining cardiovascular health, but isnt enough to shift weight for most people. keep up the good work!
