    Omega 3

I was wondering what dosage of Omega 3 you all take? I'm on my 4th day of sobriety and my skin has been itching like crazy plus my skin has suddenly become very dry. I currently take 1000mg of a high quality Omega 3 supplement per day. Does that sound high enough?

I take one 1200mg in the morning and one in the evening. Try adding one more and see how you feel. Drink plenty of water. What other supplements are you taking???

I'm also taking Calcium/Magnesium, a Solgar Multi Vitamin, Holy Basil capsules as and when needed, Ashwagandha and I think that's about it. I also take probiotics and some Pau D'Arco for the candida issue. Oh, and Milk Thistle

are you also taking Milk thistle? Some people are allergic to high doses of Milk thistle if they also have other allergies.

For my Omega 3's I eat ground flaxseed on my oatmeal every morning. I also take calcium with vitamin D for my bones, since I am post menopause. My numbers are all excellent: good and bad cholesterol, blood pressure, and all of that.
My life is better without alcohol, since 9/1/12. My sobriety tool is the list at permalink 236 on the toolbox thread under monthly abstinance.

I only get my Omega-3's from fish sources after discovering that the plant based versions are very difficult for the body to properly metabolize. Flax is however a very good source of alpha linolenic acid which is one of the omegas. Ideally we should get both in our diet as well as GLA (gamma linolenic acid). if you have risk of heart disease, (or a history of it) I can think of no other more beneficial nutrient to be taking. the health benefits of Omega -3's are indeed amazing, but you need to get considerably more than what the average pill bottle suggests. I'm taking 4grams of fish based omega-3's daily and feel it's been helpful in improving my joints as well as depression.
don't forget to take a full spectrum E complex though, it's vital to prevent lipid peroxidation when taking fish oils in these amounts.

but don't the fish get the omega 3s from plants det? i thought that why ungulates were a source for omega 3s? does it change in the animal's body to make it easier for us to access the goodness?

remember not to heat flax seeds or oil, it destroys the "goodness".

                    hi Peace!

not sure how the fish acquire the omegas initially, but the human body has a heck of a time extracting EPA and DHA from the ALA contained in flax, in fact it can take weeks of consumption before you gain benefit from it.
Fish or krill is the powerhouse of EPA and DHA. very fast therapeutic results of lowered inflammation, lowered LDL's (especially combined with a low carbohydrate diet).
flax does contain a powerful cancer fighter in the form of lignan though. so I'd try to take them both.

My impression was that plant-based omegas have been researched less, and may end up being nearly as good as fish oils. All I know for sure is that all my health numbers are great. I eat lots of fruits and veggies (daily home made brothe based soup) and my weight is good. I'm 56 years old. I put the ground flax seed on top my oatmeal after cooking it, put in some frozen blueberries first.

Sunbeam, sounds like your diet is really good and your positive health is the happy result. I've found quite a bit on the plant omega sources without having to dig too much. Once again I'd look at the whole family of omegas and try to get a variety of them in the diet.

For those of you interested in exploring these kinds of nutritional issues, especially as regards supplements, I would like to mention that there is a Holistic Healing forum here (comes right under this forum for forum jump) -- there is loads of information (and conversation) about supplements there.
