The Paleo Diet. Learning from our evolution

    diet

I am doing the slow carb diet(or the 4 hour body diet) which is basically the same thing. You cut out all forms of sugar, which helps with the alcohol cravings. It's clean real food. Key is to consume 30+grams of lean protein after you wake up. I make a whey protein shake or a frittata with 1/2eggs to egg whites and lots of vegis!

It's the wheat and sugar DET don't you think? And the driven lifestyle maybe?

The Paleo Diet. Learning from our evolution

          Hi Ne,

It's Det's thread and I'm indebted to him for getting me started down this road. So this is just my 2c worth. I find this guy:-

Food fascism and the 80/20 rule

to have a pretty balanced approach to strict Paleo eating vs the myriad tasty temptations that confront us.

          Cheers

Not sure where this thread is up to as dont have time to read 24 pages! Just letting you know I use the paelo diet and it has made me feel amazing! I do cross fit and it is the "diet" they suggest
If drinking is interfering with your work, you're probably a heavy drinker. If work is interfering with your drinking, you're probably an alcoholic.

I think Chris Kresser's entire website is fantastic! He is very open to individual variablility and encourages self-experimentation to figure out what works. An easy way to learn from him is to subscribe to his podcasts and then listen to him while you exercise, clean house, anything that does not require your full concentration.

I think his bottom line is to eat whole foods and not to eat sugar in any form, most grain and grain products (definitely not wheat), or industrial seed oils. After that, it depends on the individual. Some of the other Paleo gurus are so single-minded that I find them little better than the authorities who are telling us to eat a low-fat, whole-grain diet (the diet that is killing us, not to mention making us fat before we succomb).

I am convinced that this way of eating makes giving up alcohol physically less difficult (but unfortunately does not solve the psychological issues).

I'm also a fan of his approach to exercise: short, high intensity with considerable rest. His evolutionary arguments on that topic are as strong as those regarding nutrition.

He explains so much about why evolution has put us where we are and why our practices (food, exercise, stress, etc.) that are inconsistent with that evolution cause us so many problems.

Anyway, spending time on his website could be a good way to while away those hours formerly spent drinking!

Martye, so pleased to hear of your success!

NoSugar I agree with your summary and yes Kresser is indeed a genius as is Robb Wolf and Dr Cordain. they have saved countless lives and reversed some very challenging diseases.

the gut/brain axis is of particular interest to me as it's so important to overall health and has been studied by modern MD's so very little. I do believe it's the new frontier of healthfulness.

I've found this movie to be fascinating BTW:

                    Thanks for the link, Determinator.

I had heard of the movie but having not found it on Netflix, did not know it was available. I will check it out.

Before I ramped up my 'learn to stop drinking' crusade and started obsessively reading threads on MWO, I was constantly reading the works of and listening to podcasts by the people you mention as well as others - Jaminet, Jimmy Moore, Rosedale, Abel James, Guyenet, Gedgaudas, Lustig, etc. etc. etc. I have learned more in the last year regarding biology, nutrition, exercise, and overall health than in the 6 years I spent in graduate school in Nutritional Science no less! How ironic is that? I was totally mislead by my education, I'm afraid, and currently work in a field sponsored by the USDA, FDA, and all of the major food companies. At least I don't work for an alcohol manufacturer!!

My friends already think I'm a bit off (ok, nuts!) given that I won't eat sugar, grains, grain products, seed oils, etc., and consume a large amount of fat. I'm not sure what is going to happen when they find out about the new 'no ethanol' policy, also! The inconsistency of consuming too much ethanol after having made the other changes finally drove me to face my situation and get some help. Turns out MWO has been a godsend.

Anyway, nice to meet someone who shares my "other" interests!

Thanks, again, Det. I watched it last night. For anyone unfamiliar with the subject, the movie provides a clear and entertaining introduction. I will suggest it to friends who doubt my choices. Fortunately, most members of my family see the benefits and we are on the same 'team'.

I noticed that many paleo/low-carb advocates avoid the subject of alcohol, even when avoiding it would fit well in their argument. Even Lustig can't bring himself to tell us to avoid it:

I wonder sometimes if they are afraid that they will turn off too many people from their key message if they encourage eliminating alcohol or if like I was, they personally don't want to give up that particular poison... I used their wishy-washiness to justify my continuing wine habit while I made all of the other changes. I knew that it was the most destructive thing I was doing or ever have done but I just couldn't see giving it up. Thankfully that has changed.

Anyway, I'll be interested in your thoughts

                          Hi Friends,
I haven't posted on this thread before, but I've been following a low carb diet since about Dec 1 that has enabled me to get off meds for my acid reflux/GERD. That's very exciting. It's not strict Paleo, but within that 80/20 rule I believe. I also enjoy Chris Kessler, and Matt Stone (180 degree Health )often gives me food for thought.

He's wacky and everyone's critic. He actually has an anti-paleo book out that I will probably read sometime. I believe it's the dogmatism that he protests. Matt's real message is: learn to read your body and give it what it needs.

Sunbeam I'm also critical of dogma across the board. Even Robb Wolf (author of the paleo solution) pokes fun at the paleo 'orthodoxy'. Anyone that tells you they have it all figured out is full of crap. The learning process of nutritional science (as with all the sciences) is a fascinating and never ending journey
