The Paleo Diet. Learning from our evolution

FYI Chris Kresser and John Keifer (of the bio-jacked podcast) are non drinkers. Also found out my fave late night talk show host Craig Ferguson is an RA. He had some funny observations on his visit to Mardi Gras

Det, I want to thank you for this amazing wealth of information on Paleo eating. It has become an important part of my arsenal in healing my many health problems caused by excessive alcohol over many years. I simply do not get indigestion when I eat this way. This alone tells me that this is the way I should be eating for life.

        Hi Det.

Chris K. Is my go to guy right now so his being AF is nice. Actually I don't see how the low carb and paleo people can sanction AL consumption with a straight face.
I have started a 'real food' thread. The link is in my signature. I didn't want to make it too restrictive but I think for the most part we will get good contributions. Please post some of your favorite recipes if you have time.

Chili, same here. I used to have bad indigestion and acid reflux when I 'thought' I was eating healthy years ago. now on paleo I haven't taken a tums or antacid in more than two years.

NoSugar, that's awesome. I'll try to document some yummy real food ideas. I'm really crappy for recipes as I don't measure anything, but I can take a photo and give a good description anyway

The Paleo Diet. Learning from our evolution

Det~ Just read that link. My boss is on the Paleo diet. When I was AF last summer for several months, I did a low carb diet and felt amazing. I gave up bread and found a pasta that is called nonoodles that is very low carb and then realized that it was the red sauce I liked and not actually the starchy pasta. So I would order a dish out that had plenty of veggies, sausage, meat, etc and ask the waitress to bring the pasta in a to go box...that way I could feed my kids...LOL. I also ate a lot of lentils and cannelinni beans. It was only hard the first few days, and then it got easier. At breakfast, I ordered eggs and a meat and gave the potatoes and toast to my bf. Then, as you probably know, I slipped, began to drink and it all went to hell. Now I'm starting again. I know exactly when I screwed up...I ate the mashed potatoes with gravy and a lot of stuffing at Thanksgiving....downhill from there and then I started to drink and BAM! They sell a product called Cocopops, no chocolate, they are like a big rice cakes, but low carb. I will start reading some of these posts on here, I may find some interesting stuff.

welcome Struggles! glad you are finding this eating lifestyle to be beneficial. it's the only way for my wife and I. we feel TONS better when eating low-ish carb paleo. I also love the marinara sauces sans noodles and eat the meal in a wide bowl like a cioppino. sometimes I'll put in saute'd cabbage. i really don't miss the pasta!

on a tangent, some newly compiled research on the importance of adequate and quality sleep is very interesting to me. check out podcast 181 here:

also in VERY exciting news, I've been in email contact with Robb Wolf who now lives here in Reno and we are going to do dinner soon! it's not often one gets to connect with a personal hero. wooo!
we have some hobbies in common so this could be a really fun thing.

ok.... must get some of that quality sleep. zzzzz

The Paleo Diet. Learning from our evolution

                    Bump

This topic is so important I think because when we drink we imbibe a ton of sugar without thinking about it at all. IMHO eating as close to clean (Paleo) is important to saying sober.

Anyway I hope there will be more activity here soon. The topic is not exhausted by any means - always new stuff. I've checked out "The Perfect Diet" very sane - good fat/meats and greens etc. but some carbs like rice, potatoes, and sweet potatoes too. Very very very good blog, and Q&A (oh, and the author is Dr. Paul Jaminet - he's a scientist/computer expert and his wife is a cancer researcher)

                      Hi, Jazi

I certainly feel better eating this way and agree that it is a very important topic.

My approach is to eat "real food", avoid all gluten-containing grains, GMO foods, sugar, and seed oils and eat fruit, other grains (e.g. white rice) and starches (potatoes, yams) at modest levels that don't spike my blood sugar. I regularly eat vegetables, fish, meat, eggs, nuts, dairy, etc.

I haven't consumed gluten for over 20 years and I've been eating this sort of paleo way for a couple years. Not surprisingly, finally stopping drinking wine took my health up several notches! Should have done that much earlier but such is the power of addiction, I guess .

Hi Back, NoSugar. Yeah the last thing to go is our old friend alcohol. My husband is still convinced that red wine is good for his health - even though that's only a very small part of the picture. And he drinks a TON!! He doesn't see the tipping point into no gain. Oh well each to his/her own. I've got my own struggle going on.

I personally see Paleo, and eating as clean as possible, as part of 'self-care' As soon as my drinking starts up, my self care goes down. I'm glad I found this thread. Part of being accountable.

Jazi's Mum, great to have you! yes, the Jaminet's are brilliant and I love their work. Indeed alcoholics are carb addicts as well as alcohol addicts. flipping our metabolism over to fat burning seems to be very effective mentally and physically for us. Determining the macronutrient ratio comes down to personal experimentation, but as a nutrition geek I find it fun

Thanks, Det, I'm feeling good. You got me onto that Bullet Proof guy's podcasts. Just listed to one w/ D'Agostino (sp?) and his work re: ketosis. Pretty interesting material and amazing how it helps with some diseases. I also read Grain Brain over the holiday - the title is a bit off-putting but the book itself is good. And alarming!

                            Hope you're doing well! NS

                              same for Chris Kresser.

podcast #82 here: The Bulletproof Executive — The State of High Performance
is a fascinating look into the science of biohacking with a family of supplements called nootropics. they have profound effect on brain health, regeneration of damaged nerve tissue, and stimulation of advanced learning potential and memory. I've already begun my own experimentation. my primary goal is brain repair so the other effects are just a bonus. today I started using a 'stack' of noopept and aniracetam. felt very 'on' but certainly not jittery in the slightest. kind of hard to describe. not exactly a paleo subject though... maybe I should start a thread for nootropics.

The Paleo Diet. Learning from our evolution

Would the Paleo diet help with arthritis and osteoporosis?

                                Hi,

I have drunk most of my life (now 52) and my bones are weaker and pre-osteoporosis. I know this has been caused by alcohol abuse.

I have also developed severe arthritis which as I understand could be related to inflammation in the body.

I stopped drinking 7 months ago, with the help of baclofen, but I no longer take it.

My plan is to remain AF. I realise that a lot of the damage to my body cannot be fixed but I would like to try and stop it progressing as much as I can.

Sugar is a big problem for me, along with coffee. I am not overweight.

I am doing my best to cut down coffee and sugar but finding it very hard.

Do you think I need to approach coffee/sugar the same as alcohol? In other words none at all? I accept it now that I cannot drink again.

                                Any advice gratefully received.

                                Caro
