I realize regular potatoes are full of starch, but they're one of the only things I can get down right now, and also, they're the only potato around here sold organically.

Humanely Raised Animals - Whole Foods
Just wanted to chime in here. I try to eat as much organic as I can find, grass fed meats, non GMO, etc., which are the ideas being discussed here. I also try to eat the most humanely raised meats I can find, which is usually from Whole Foods.
Just in case it hasn't been mentioned on this thread, Whole Foods now even labels their meats with a 1-5 system (5 being the most humanely raised in that the animal spent its entire life on the same farm). And, they label their fish with a sustainability factor.
Great thread. Thanks for starting it Det. The more people are willing to pay for these kinds of foods, the more mainstream they will become. Better for human animals and nonhuman animals!

MCT Oil vs CO
I'm betting Dete will have information on this, so thought I'd post my MCT confusion here. This is info from the internet collected as I try to adhere to the diet I'm on which requires MCT not coconut oil.
I like that MCT doesn't solidify. It stays in liquid form so it is good for dressings and smoothies. I do NOT like that I'm adding a refined oil to my diet.
MCT - Medium Chain Triglyceride is derived from coconut oil, but seems to be a product of further refining than coconut oil preferred by some vs coconut oil because it helps more with production of ketones, & to help with demensia. MCT oil has more of the medium chain triglycerides than straight coconut oil. Dr. Larry McCleary writes that MCT oil produces more ketones than coconut oil in the body.
However, because it's less refined, it feels instinctive to assume that coconut oil would have other intrinsic benefits that the pure MCT oil supposedly does not have including immune system benefits.
-MCT products contain the 8 & 10 C chain capric and caprylic acids. Coconut oil is about 65% MCT's, but only 15% is the MCT's found in products marketed as "MCT Oil".
-Averaging statistics found in various places, CO is made up of just under 50% lauric acid (12 carbon) and another 15% capric and caprylic acids (10 & 8 C's) for approximately 65% MCT content. The rest of the saturated fat content is about 20% mystiric, 8% palmitic and 3% stearic acids (12, 14 & 16C's respectively) for a total of about 94-95%. The remaining 5-6% is mostly two P/MUFA's -- oleic and linoleic acids in about a 4-5:1 ratio oleic/linoleic.
Oleic is the Omega-9 MUFA predominant in olive oil, linoleic is the Omega-6 PUFA.

Bruunhilde, great question. must say I'm not familiar with this derivation of coconut oil. how does it taste? I'm a very taste oriented person so I'm curious.
incidentally I don't aim for a constant state of ketosis. I'm happy to be semi ketogenic (in and out of ketosis) and it's been working very well for both my wife and I. (both still losing body fat and staying lean even with minimal exercise). woo hooo!
I'd bet if you asked Robb this question he'd answer it on his podcast.

the concept of delineating some nutrients from a food (and discarding the rest by default) is very interesting and I was just listening to a Chris Kresser podcast today about various isolates of proteins you commonly find in protein powders. there are some very serious health drawbacks to do this and science is only just now taking this seriously for some reason. for example studies have shown that casein protein is potentially carcinogenic if takes as an isolate. however when taken with the rest of the enzymes and other proteins in the complete whey (as a whole food) then it's perfectly healthy.
seems when we screw with foods trying to improve them through molecular means we end up paying the price.
another interesting discovery is the low-fat and non-fat milk scam. these products are junk food and unhealthy, even contributing to disease and poor health. The human digestive system lacks the enzyme for lactose but nature conveniently provides lactase in whole milk which makes it perfectly digestible. the lactase is destroyed in pasteurizing and processing of the product. full-fat unpasteurized milk, cream and butter conversely is nutrient-dense and a fantastic food source containing the important lactase and many other human-friendly cultures. it blows my mind but people still think that eating fat makes them fat, or that cholesterol causes heart disease. oh well. fighting one myth at a time!nosce te ipsum

What an excellent thread, Det.
I've been paleo for a while now. I'm not entirely strict. I still eat dairy and I'm working on the AL thing. I'm a fan of Mark's Daily, Cordain, the Neanderthin guy, Weston Price, etc.
It suits me. I'm allergic to soy/legumes and the only flour product is coconut.
I look forward to hanging out here with you guys.
