The Paleo Diet. Learning from our evolution

Booktree, I need it in writing myself, I don't do well with lectures either. Everyone processes information differently. I do much better with books! I can only learn from a lecture if I take copious notes to read. :H

So the poor (and the uninformed) are still eating the same way.

The Paleo Diet. Learning from our evolution

Hey guys, I need some advice here...

This is embarrassing, but have you noticed any weird digestive problems with this diet? I've been eating mostly just lean meats, fruits, and vegetables for the past week, and my intestines seem a bit upset with me. Constantly rumbling, needing to go to the bathroom a lot (and not just peeing, if you know what I mean), etc. Maybe it's just the fruits & veggies, but I'm not really eating much more of those than I was before. Am I getting perhaps too MUCH protein? I thought protein made a person constipated? Am I undergoing some kind of ketosis or something? Not sure what's going on.

Normally, I wouldn't be too worried about it, as the body has to get adjusted to any new way of eating, but I'm kind of especially embarrassed because I have a first date with someone (from out of town) tomorrow, and, well, you know, don't want to be worrying about this then.

Oh, the other thing is, that I've been taking my (twice daily) L-Glut powder with a Whey protein powder, as someone advised me that the amino acids in the protein powder would help digest the L-Glut or convert it into whatever it needs to be to work in the brain... Should I just stop taking the protein powder, as that might be overkill at this point?

I'm not an expert but can tell you my own experience and what I've heard from one other person.

My first week my guts were doing all sorts of things too, I think just getting used to the diet without carbs and sugars.

L-glut causes diarrhea in me, and no one else to my knowledge. And it causes gas in only one person here on MWO that I know of. Mostly people have no upset at all with L-glut. You may want to cut it out for a couple days to experiment. You could cut out the protein powder too, and then if you feel better, add one in at a time to figure out which is the culprit.

ditto what Bruunhilde's saying. you'll need a week or two for you body to adjust. if you've previously been on a fast food/packaged food type diet it may take 3 weeks for your digestive system to settle down.
if you're eating paleo/primal you won't need a protein shake. I'd try the elimination thing, then reintroduce just the L Glutamine after a rest and adjustment period.

really good material on addiction/depression and it's relationship to diet/fat/cholesterol. The science is in, and the fact is that animal fats helps us in just about every conceivable way. they are unlike any other fats and cannot be effectively simulated or replaced. This is such an exciting time to be alive! we are witnessing the continued blossoming of the age of reason.

Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride is fast becoming an international superstar in nutrition, especially gut/digestion and it's impact on our mental health. really fascinating material. She cured her own son of autism based on her GAPS diet. I've heard Chris Kresser speak very highly of her, and most lately on the Underground Wellness podcasts where she was a guest speaker and did an amazing job.

the human body is only 1/10 human cells. that's right. the other 90% of the cells we transport are foreign microbes/protozoa etc. we are a 'host' for an enormous and very complex unseen world within our gastro-intestinal system. I just find this exciting stuff to learn. am I whacked or what

The Paleo Diet. Learning from our evolution

holy snot, I don't believe it. check out Readers Digest Feb 2011 on the cover "eat this and lose weight"
which features an article called 'is this the only way to lose weight?' with interview of Gary Taubes.

a quote: public health authorities have been hammering home a very simple message for the past 40 years: if you don't want to be fat, cut the fat from your dit. And in those years, obesity rates have gone from 13 percent to 22 percent to, in the last national survey, 33 percent

another quote: the low fat diet that people have been eating in hopes of protecting thier heart is actually bad for their heart

I just so surprised and pleased to see this hit the mainstream media a little bit.

Hi D- Always keeping low-carb-but not being too strict- sometimes I will grab a small chocolate-but definitely don't imbibe in too may carbs other than veggies...I don't like fruit...never did-isn't that weird? My problem is I LOVE bread and pasta...so I am semi controlling that...I exercise -just doing 3-4 miles of jog/walking a day but that's it...I am happy with how I am, ...and my cholesterol level is great!

beautiful! nicely done. hey, a bit of chocolate here and there is fine in my books. I'm just doing a 'strict phase' to do some aggressive fat trimming of the last few annoying pounds. then I'll add back in a few more carbs and see where my balancing point is.

Speaking of chocolate, sugar-free chocolate is my new fave. You can get dark chocolate or milk chocolate - I usually prefer dark chocolate but the dark chocolate that substitutes manitol for sugar is too sweet for me. Ironically, I like milk choc better in this brand, at least. I am probably getting way too much carb/fat with this but according to the package, the manitol does not spike your insulin.
