hya JM, yes, I have bulletproof coffee with both coconut oil and grass-fed butter that I whiz up with an immersion blender. I LOVE it! the combination of short and medium chain EFA's are a superb way to power the brain on turbo and maintain some ketosis through the morning hours (provided of course you don't ruin it by eating carbs in the am).

Sorry to be stupid, but does the oil/butter actually stay mixed if you use the blender? I find I can't stand it if it's just a half inch floating on the top of the coffee - YUCK!! But with the coconut milk or heavy cream the oil/butter seems to stay emulsified better.

The Paleo Diet. Learning from our evolution
Hi all,
I am jumping in. I eat mostly Paleo. I take baclofen and for the most part am sober. I LOVE bulletproof coffee! The weird thing about eating this way is your cholesterol levels will get wonky. If you get the chance google cholesterol and paleo diet. I get a VAP panel done yearly and my doctor looks at me like I'm nuts
Great thread! I also have a grass fed beef source that delivers monthly. It's much cheaper than buying it from a Whole Foods type of place.

Sam, check out Mary Eng - she's a fat scientist (you know what I mean:H)
The cholesterol levels we're told are bad are not really bad at all. Just as many people with low cholesterol levels have blocked arteries and heart attacks as those with higher ones.
Also check out books by Uffe Ravnskov, and Dr. Malcolm Kendrick. The science is there: saturated fat, and cholesterol levels have nothing to do with heart health.

ditto what Jazzi said, also if you are actively losing weight your blood triglycerides will certainly be elevated. cholesterol (even a VAP LDL count) is a very poor indicator of health status. what does count is a lipoprotein particle count, but most doctors don't keep up on the latest info and you'll have to ask for the test specifically.nosce te ipsum

The Paleo Diet. Learning from our evolution
Hello All,
I usually post on the med's section but I am very interested in trying to improve my diet.
Eight months AF. I was on baclofen or I would never have been able to achieve that, I no longer take baclofen, but will if the cravings return.
I work long hours and have terrible sugar and bread cravings. I usually GIVE IN to them.
I am not overweight but I have arthritis and thin bones, now 52.
I love coffee but am trying to cut down as I have read it is bad for arthritis and bones.
I realise there must be a lot of inflammation in my body.
Can anybody recommend any quick tips to try and cut down on sugar?
Should one approach sugar the same way as alcohol i.e completely cutting it out?
Thanks in advance for any replies
Caro

The Paleo Diet. Learning from our evolution
Caro, first kudos on wanting to get into a better health lifestyle and your AF time. having helped many friends and associates through this process, I'd recommend not going into a low carb diet all at once. Instead try to eat a better class of carbs. sweet potato is my fav and it's very nutritious.
see if you can limit your coffee to the am hours which should help with sleep.
as you progress, try to get the bulk of your carbs at lunch or later in the day.
as you decrease carbs you will need to increase healthy dietary fats (carbs and fats are interchangeable for metabolism).
instead of table salt, switch to red Himalayan or similar unrefined salt as it's going to have trace elements good for bone health.
to reduce inflammation here are some foods I'd immediately cease:
wheat products of all kinds
soy products of all kinds
refined sugar
aspartame
industrial seed oils (vegetable oil, soybean oil, corn oil etc)
dairy
for good fats cook with coconut oil or real butter or ghee. I use extra virgin olive oil as a dressing/topping but don't cook with it much as it's pretty delicate.
keep up the good work and keep in touch!nosce te ipsum

Dear Determinator,
Thank you for your reply and support.
Some questions if I may:
I have brought a bread maker, are there any type of flours that don't cause inflammation?
Are gluten free oats ok?
Is hemp seed oil ok?
I thought tofu was healthy!
Could you describe what you eat in a typical day?
Do you have a simple book you could recommend?
Sorry if there are too many questions but I really want to turn my life around and try and improve my health. I get confused with diet as there is so much information out there which seems to contradict itself. For example I have been eating a lot of organic dairy products as I thought the calcium would be good for my bones.
Thanks again and please don't feel you have to answer all these questions.

The Paleo Diet. Learning from our evolution
Hi, Caro
I second what Det has written.
This is an excellent book: Your Personal Paleo Code: The 3-Step Plan to Lose Weight, Reverse Disease, and Stay Fit and Healthy for Life: Chris Kresser: 9780316322898: Amazon.com: Books
and this is a clearly written, straightforward website:
Authority Nutrition - An Evidence-Based Approach
Take care, NS

no worries Caro.
personally I'd stay away from oats since they have such poor nutritional density and no real food value. they are also a simple carb and crank up blood glucose (more damage).
I must say I'm pretty clueless on the paleo version of bread recipes. I hear there are some out there but it's a class of foods I've succeeded in simply eliminating so you're on your own there, sorry.
hemp oil I hear is ok but I'm not sure about heating it. I'll check it out.
my typical day when at home:
start with freshly ground coffee blended with a tablespoon ea of coconut oil and butter (bulletproof coffee)
sometimes I won't eat breakfast at all (intermittent fasting)
when I do have breakfast it's no carbs at all or maybe some kale. usually bacon and eggs (local ranch eggs) or sausage and eggs.
lunch will be heavy on a variety of veggies and also 30grams or more of protein and a good whack of healthy fats. maybe a stir-fry or a tuna salad, or if I'm lazy a tin of sardines and some raw veggies.
dinner will be another veggie and meat meal, sometimes I'll throw in a starchy tuber like a baked sweet potato but not every night (I'm fairly low carb adapted).
for snacks I'll have nuts and naturally made cheese (don't eat dairy if you don't tolerate it though)
I'll also eat fruit and nuts for desert sometimes.
some of my fav meals are curries made with coconut milk, lots of meat and veggies and no rice. I will have rice on occasion though as I make it for my wife who loves rice. Rice is a simple starch but not problematic from an inflammatory perspective for most folks.
when I make an Italian meat/marinara sauce I'll have it over a mound of saute'd kale or spinach instead of pasta. it's really good and much more nutritious and you don't get that 'oh crap I feel like I ate a rock' feeling afterwards.
for stir-fry I'll usually serve over some shredded fried cabbage as it gives a nice crunch and I don't miss the noodles at all.
+1 on Kressers book NoSugar mentioned!nosce te ipsum

I'd also encourage you to check out a turmeric supplement as well as eating as much of it as you can. I see there is a thread on the subject nearby.
incidentally a friend of mine used to suffer from terrible arthritis until he discovered that by eliminating sugar it would go into total remission. hope it works as well for you!nosce te ipsum

The Paleo Diet. Learning from our evolution
Dear Det and NS,
Thank you both for your replies, very informative and helpful.
It is so nice to be able to focus on something positive (improving health) as opposed to constantly fire fighting (trying not to drink alcohol).
I will try not to be a pest with lots of questions, but it is wonderful to get advice from people who understand the damage alcohol has caused to our health.
Thanks again,
Caro

The Paleo Diet. Learning from our evolution
Hi NS and Mr D,
I only had eggs for breakfast yesterday and protein and vegetables for my other two meals.
Felt fine, and about the first time for years that I didn't consume loads of chocolate and bread.
It's a start!
Why is Bulletproof coffee good?
Could somebody with thin bones and arthritis take it?
Mr D how long did it take your friend with arthritis to see results on his no sugar diet please?
Thanks again
Caro
