The Paleo Diet. Learning from our evolution

caro/2;1621722 wrote: Hi NS and Mr D,

I only had eggs for breakfast yesterday and protein and vegetables for my other two meals.

Felt fine, and about the first time for years that I didn't consume loads of chocolate and bread.

    It's a start!

    Why is Bulletproof coffee good?

Could somebody with thin bones and arthritis take it?

Mr D how long did it take your friend with arthritis to see results on his no sugar diet please?

    Thanks again

    Caro
Hi Caro - NS & Det are the experts but ......
But I wondered if you have considered Vitamin D supplements for your bones.
Not sure where you are - but all over Europe anyway - the population are so deficient in Vitamin D ( no sunlight a lot of the year) that they also cannot absorb calcium from food & supplements. They go together.
When the sun does shine we are now in a habit of covering up, even the kids, from head to toe so rickets are making a comeback :egad:

Several nutrients are important for bone health. It is best to get them from food but sometimes supplements are necessary. I take fermented cod liver oil daily.

Caro, if you're going to restrict carbs, you need to be ready to eat more fat. That is tough at first because we've become so fat-phobic. It turns out that was based on bad science and in many instances, no science. There is only a certain amount of protein a person can or should eat so... a low carb diet by definition has to be higher in fat. The trick is to consume the right fats. (That is the benefit of the bulletproof coffee - butter from pastured cows and coconut oil are "good" fats).

Another website you might find interesting is Diet Doctor - Real food for your health. He explains the high fat, low carb diet that is popular, and even recommended, in Sweden.

ditto all the above. Also I forgot to mention Omega-3 fatty acids for a low inflammation diet. Ideally we need to keep out Omega 3 and omega 6 ratio at about 1:1 (the average US citizen has it at about 1:20 due to eating a low fat/wrong fat diet).
best sources are krill and cold-water fish like salmon. you can get krill capsules and I'd take 2 or 3 times the recommended dose personally.

have you done any bloodwork to see if you are D3 deficient?

regarding my friend with arthritis pain..... if he puts sugar in his morning coffee he will have joint pain that same day. it's pretty scary how fast it tears us apart especially if we are already inflamed. You should start feeling better in only 3 days based on what I've seen. then the key is not getting sucked into the concept of 'cheat meals'. some folks can get away with them but if you're already starting from a disadvantage I'd avoid them.

I can only see coffee being an issue if you are very gluten intolerant as there is a clinically proven cross-reactivity whereby folks with celiac disease will suffer reactions from coffee beans that mimic grain consumption.

His take on things is interesting - and alarming. Did you read his book? It is a shame it has such a cutesy title - it is much more evidence-based than the title suggests. It is enough to keep me on the path I'm on - dementia and other neurological disorders are so frightening. It is hard to meet people with those problems, or who have them in their family, and not suggest this approach. But - it seems people really have to find out on their own or they just think you're nuts. A new paper came out yesterday linking sugar intake and heart disease - it is a pretty well-done study in a good journal. So... the word is getting out .

just an update on a supplement I've been taking for a couple weeks now. it's called 'alpha brain' from onnit.com
both my wife and I are really liking this as well as an anti-anxiety supplement they have called 'new mood'. they seem to have a good quality couple of products so far. the alpha brain helps my cognitive function and performance during the day, and the new mood helps me unwind and relax for sleep at night in a very natural feeling way.

                        Hello All,

Just to say I have just Grain Brain, and it makes a lot of sense to me.

I am going to start his program (today) with a one day fast as he recommends and take it from there.

I have tried to make Paleo bread, not worked out at all. But I won't give up, just yet!

Thanks to all for all the really good advice I have already received.

Will keep you posted . I haven't read right through here yet , but i've found a website , Marks daily apple , to be a great and easily followed site .

Bran New, that's awesome! do you have a substantial source of choline in your diet? if not, there are handy supplements. Also there are some great milk thistle/artichoke extract/beet extract types of liver tonics that are claimed to work well in healing the liver.

                              Caro, how you faring?

                                Hi Determinator,

I am doing well, having a real go at the Paleo diet.

Early days yet but my mood has improved and my arthritis too.

Hoping that eventually I will be able to stop taking Amitriptyline (50mg) which I take at night to help me sleep. My arthritis is always worst at night. I will check out the supplements you and your wife take, maybe they could help me too.

Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your knowledge and asking how i was doing.

                                Regards

                                Caro
