    The Benefits of Coconut Oil

mmmmm NoSugar! Call me simple....but I was thrilled when Costco started carrying the big tubs of organic coconut oil. I use it on my hair and sometimes on my hands. And you use it......WHERE?:shocked::catroll:

In the small Native villages in northern Alaska, the locals have a treat they call "Eskimo Ice Cream" made of Crisco and Blueberries. I make the city girl's skookum version of that with frozen blueberries and a bit of frozen coconut oil. So good!

        The Benefits of Coconut Oil

I just recently started using more coconut oil in cooking. I find it adds a touch of sweetness to scrambled eggs that makes them yummy. I bought a case of Spectrum brand all natural coconut oil spray and use that exclusively instead of Pam spray. You can find it in the organic section of your store or on Amazon.

          Uses for coconut oil

Hi, It looks like the same people seem to turn up on the health-oriented threads - good to see you guysI

I try to buy the cold-pressed CO and have not found that in bulk. CO is expensive but with all the products I no longer buy because I use CO instead, I suspect it ends up being a financial win. Not having the additional products saves space and makes traveling much easier, too.

The myriad uses of CO are all over the net; e.g.: Coconutoil.com - Research on Coconut Oil's Health Benefits and Coconut Research Center Home Page.

I'll just list the things I use it for:

          Cooking uses:

Cooking (e.g. roasted sweet potoates, like LFP said, for eggs -- just anytime you need oil. I agree, LFP, it is much better than something like PAM which always made me feel like I had a coating of something on my teeth - yuck!).

Baking (I do little of this but made a chocolate b'day cake one time using CO and got more compliments on that cake than any I've ever before made).

Adding to coffee for nutritional benefits and calories (A friend mentioned putting it in a smoothie and liking it).

Burying supplements in it to make them easier to swallow.

Eating straight when I'm in a rush and just need some calories or before bed and I'm still hungry.

Turnagain, that Eskimo ice cream maybe should be called Tropical ice cream when made with CO! I am surprised the people in northern Alaska don't use lard (good) rather than Crisco (bad). Other berries could be in there, also.
MHP, let us know how yours turns out!

          Other uses
          :

There are several recipes online for adding other natural ingredients to make substitute products (e.g. adding essential oils).
Other than the toothpaste, I use it straight.

Body/ face moisturizer (need to allow time to soak in)

Hair repair (night only! need to wash it out b/f you face the world!)

          Bath oil

          Make-up remover

          Toothpaste (1:1 with baking soda)

          Lip ointment

Salve for cuts and wounds (and hemorrhoids First TMI: internal and external).

          Ointment for arthritic joints.

          Lubricant (Second TMI).
All I'm saying is, CO is CO.
K-Y jelly is Water, Glycerin, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Chlorhexidine Gluconate, Gluconolactone, Methylparaben, Sodium Hydroxide :eeks:

(Bet you can guess my approximate age :H:H!)

That is all I can think of right now. Do you guys have others??

          Have a great day, NS

          ADDED LATER: Oil pulling daily.

Thanks for all this good information on CO ! I use my in the bathtub for dry skin. I have not put it in my hair yet, but heard it is a great conditioner. I didn't know the liver would benefit from CO. Great stuff.

It is a great bath oil but you sure have to clean the tub or the next person taking a shower could have a major fall! It makes everything SO slippery.

I recently ordered the CO from: Green Pasture Products. It is by far the best I have ever had - I think I could eat it straight out of the jar (and use the cheaper stuff for other things).

Let us know how it works on your hair!

I don't have the time to scroll back right now but has anyone mentioned it helps to whiten teeth? May be an old wife's tale but I did hear it on the radio from a caller last week.

                      The Benefits of Coconut Oil

                      Olive oil

I looked up cooking with olive oil and this is what I found:

When to skip olive oil: If you?re cooking over high heat, don?t choose olive oil. Olive oil has a lower smoke point?the point at which an oil literally begins to smoke (olive oil?s is between 365? and 420?F)?than some other oils. When you heat olive oil to its smoke point, the beneficial compounds in oil start to degrade, and potentially health-harming compounds form.
What to use instead: Canola oil, on the other hand, has a higher smoke point and is a good choice if you?ll be cooking over high heat, as when you?re roasting vegetables or saut?ing food over high heat. It also has a neutral flavor and is packed with heart-healthy alpha-linolenic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid), which makes it ideal for baking. It?s also cheaper than olive oil, so if you?re trying to trim your grocery bill then canola oil is a good option. Most of the canola oil in the United States is made from genetically-modified canola seeds, however, so if that?s a concern, choose organic canola oil. Peanut oil has a very high smoke point, and so is also good for high-heat cooking, like stir-frying. Although more expensive, avocado, macadamia nut, tea and almond oils are also good mono-rich choices for everyday use.

I have read that oil pulling can help whiten teeth. Here's a couple links to oil pulling:

My dental hygienist noticed that I had much less plaque on my teeth and asked what I was using. She had never heard of coconut oil pulling but was very impressed .

Have a look here Cooking oil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia at the extraction and refining processes and NB these last two sentences
Most large-scale commercial cooking oil refinement will involve all of these steps in order to achieve a product that's uniform in taste, smell and appearance, and has a longer shelf life.[42] Cooking oil intended for the health food market will often be unrefined, which can result in a less stable product but minimizes exposure to high temperatures and chemical processing.

I just use a little water for high heat cooking. When your food has cooled to eating temperature you can dress it with Extra virgin or virgin olive oil. It is best not to use olive oil or light or extra light as they involve the use of chemical to extract the oil.

I pull occasionally with coconut oil and I try to take some everyday but sometimes it makes me gag - jelly does too so I guess it's a texture thing.
