    The Benefits of Coconut Oil

I've heard of this "oil pulling", but I have to admit, I have no idea what it is. How does one do it and what are the benefits?

Bebe, I do put it in my green tea in the morning, but I also eat it plain. I guess I've just gotten used to it and do whatever (I've still never cooked with it, but will be trying the sweet potato idea brought up by Determinator.) Maybe it's an acquired taste? My two boys aren't fond of it, but my daughter who is 3, loves it. I'm not kidding you, she begs me for spoonfuls. I only allow her one a day, but she'd have much more if I allowed it!

      The Benefits of Coconut Oil

      Hi Redhead,

1/2 - 1tsp oil swished back and forth through the teeth for 15/20 mins in the morning. Health benefits are meant to be huge and varied. Here's a link to Bruce Fife's site,

Thank you, Believer. I think this is what I'll call you (if you're OK with it), since your name is very long and I couldn't think of a cute way to shorten it. And maybe you're starting to become a believer, after all? I mean that you can acheive sobriety. I know you've been trying, and kudos to you for never giving up. We absolutely can't, that is the only time this disease will surely win!

I found the oil pulling link very interesting. I have to admit, I'm a bit skeptical, but that's OK. I'm also open to new things, so I'm going to give it a try. I'm not sure if I can keep oil in my mouth for a straight 15-20 minutes, though. This would seem to require a great deal of patience, and lack of patience is one of my downfalls at times (mostly all the time ). But, I will give it a try and I'll report back if I see positive results! I've always swished it around my mouth and around my teeth and gums. I figured the antibacterial properties probably help prevent gum disease. And you know what? I believe it does work, I've noticed my need for flossing has decreased. I hope that doesn't sound too gross, but I used to need to floss everyday due to plaque, and now I can skip many days with no problemo! I just don't develop as much plaque as I used to.

        Well, alrighty then...

          The Benefits of Coconut Oil

Hi Redhead, I've got myself into the habit of popping it in my mouth and then going about my business first thing. I don't live with anyone so talking not's a problem!

And no doesn't sound gross - had a wee gum disease problem and oil pulling has really helped. Visited the dentist this week and hygenist said much improved and staying that way She thinks I'm using teepees every day but I'm flossing & oil pulling mostly.

BTW - re the stupid name - it's how I felt when I arrived here. Had 30 day goal to change it but I think I'm gonna change it now (if I can figure out how to) because it's negative and keeping me there!

I've been oil pulling for many years on and off. It really is amazing for cleaning out bacteria in the mouth. Hence your improved gum health and reduced need for flossing. Bacteria creates plaque. It's really a no brainer.

Believe, you have to contact the system admin and request a user name change. They prefer you do that vs just add a new identity. I think all the new identities throw off their statistics. I'm sure we're being studied for a new book or something!

Ha ha! - we'd be good fodder wouldn't we. I never think about the people "behind the scenes" - feels a bit big brothery! Anyway, thanks I've sent a message and waiting to be approved I think

RC - Yes, my gum health has improved loads - I've also noticed that a very painful shoulder problem is improving, always a lot less painful without AL too - funny that!

YAH, it's putting oil in your mouth and sucking/pushing it back and forth between your teeth. Sorta. Like if something was stuck between your teeth and you were trying to flush it out with a swallow of water. But you don't swallow it.

OK, being one to try just about anything, I'm doing it now. I'm pretty sure I can't make it 15 minutes though. I don't like the feeling of oil in my mouth. And the dog is staring at me. Ugh.

LOL, that's gross, I don't even want to think about it. I did a saliva test once for hormones, and I was so grossed out by the saliva in the little tube I kept gagging. Let me know if you keep doing it and how it goes.

It's not that bad, Bruun. :H I am finding it hard to keep the oil in my mouth past 5 minutes, just like I predicted. I'll keep on going, though. I'll report if I have any beneficial changes!

Go for 1/2 teaspoon cos it gets bigger and bigger with saliva and harder to keep in the mouth. LOL - does that sound gross? Less is more!

I completely understand that - I used a tablespoon last night. Eeek!
Made it 5 minutes. I'll keep trying - I have 3 bottles of coconut oil so may as well.

BTW, the coconut oil doesn't have an exp. date on it. It seems alright even though it is rather old. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks for sharing that. I guess the oil melts a bit when it's in your mouth, eh? The stuff in my pantry is solid.
