10 to 15 gm per day should be the norm if you are talking it for cravings and gut health. I've heard as high as 20. I don't take it as much as I used to as I get it in my isolate. I never found it helped with me much with cravings when I was first cutting back. But I still recommend giving it a go--because it is so beneficial to healing the digestive tract. And because you work out so hard it will help with muscle recovery. Don't want to be wasting all that hard work now.

Also, if you get 20,000 IU /20 minutes of sunshine, then why am I always deficient in vitamin D? I'm on the lowest side of the spectrum, two doctors told me to supplement. I sit next to a 6x5 window with Southern California sunshine all day and I walk the dog while it's still light. ON top of that, I'm in the car or running errands or at the dogpark under the sun all the time. I only use sunscreen on my face, not my neck and arms although I've started that since realizing my arms are looking leathery.

Bruun--you don't synthesize D through glass. I watched a video by Dr Mercola on the synthesis of Vit D. Maybe you can find it in his archives. If your skin is looking leathery you need to moisturize it not with chemicals though. Try some shea or coconut butter. Also make sure you are always hydrated and your fish/veg oil supplements are pure.(I prefer a combination of fish and plant to get the widest spectrum of efa's.
Thanks for the appreciation and you're welcome.Psalms 119:45

Bruun I hope you look for and find the youtube clip I mentioned. It's been several years since I viewed it but I seem to recall that tanning through windows comes with cautions and your best bet is to cover of with light cotton clothing and that way you retain skin moisture too. It's how they do it in the middle east.Psalms 119:45

heya Cedars my health-warrior friend
I take so much fish-based omega 3's because I'm trying to do a 1:1 balance of my omega 6's and 3's. and since I snack on a lot of nuts (loaded with omega 6's) and since I unfortunately eat at restaurants a lot due to travel (everything fried in seed and vegetable oils which are bad omega 6's) and I can't always afford grass-fed organic beef so regular beef doesn't have the CLA and omega3's of it's free-range brethren. Also chicken (even organic) is loaded with Omega 6's. anyway it's late and maybe that doesn't make sense. lolnosce te ipsum

Ok Det--I looked at the bottle of a new fish oil I'm carrying and 1 tsp has 4,150 mg of cold water fish oil blend, which nets you 1,000mgEPA and 550mg DHA. The speaker Nelson Narciso said he takes 2 tsps per day although one is generally recommended. Apparently an adult males capacity to convert ALNA to DHA was either low or absent so what you are taking is not unreasonable at all. Thanks for the challenge! Best to err on the side of caution when not sure.
IFOS is a website anyone can go to and enter the product lot number of your fish oil to see it's rating for contaminants, rancidity and potency. A 5 star is the cleanest most potent oil. Be well.Psalms 119:45

My doctor (Sheri - the one I see for thyroid / other hormones) has convinced me that testing levels of important vitamins is vital. Surprisingly, my D vitamins have always tested in the very high end of the normal range. (I'm a sun worshipper so that's probably why) Magnesium however, tends to be chronically low. (She advocated the RBC magnesium test rather than blood serum magnesium test) That's a really important one according to her - such an aid to healing. We've been working at that one for 3 years through supplementing and more importantly, eating magnesium rich foods. (she believes food makes the most difference but supplementing is OK if you are not 100% consistent about the food. Finally, my RBC magnesium is into the normal range. :yougo:
Vitamin K is another one she tests every time. There are probably a couple others - I'll have to look at my report.
I took the recommended supplements here to get me started on the AF trail and All One is still the kingpin of my routine.

I used an addiction recovery supplementation program from Pain & Stress Center which is similar to MWO. When I supplement correctly with good products, I can FEEL a big difference and exercise gives it the double whammy. I saw Zenstyle mentioned gut flora and while I didn't go back to see the reference, I probably agree because I believe that is the foundation of your immune system. Of course, quality foods goes hand in hand with this.sigpic

Everyone needs nutritional support
Sheri;1139431 wrote: Hi RC,
Can you put the link for the IFOS website. I tried googling it and couldn't find it and I don't know what IFOS stands for.
Just wanted to jump in on the vitamin D discussion and vitaminis in general.
One of the reasons some of us may have a vitabmin D deficiency is due to our drinking. Excess alcohol interferes with the bodies ability to absorb vitamins which is why simply eating a good diet (which most of us don't when we're drinking) is not enough. Here's one article that addresses it, but there are many more to be found by googling alcohol and vitamin D deficiency.
Alcoholism and Vitamin Deficiency
I know some folks are skeptical about vitamins, but I'm a believer now. I got sober using the supplements that were recommended in the MWO book in consultation with a doctor. To address UK's comment, I certainly wasn't trying to justify my drinking by taking supplements. I was simply trying to qive my body the extra support it needed to fight the battle and correct the deficiencies that my drinking had caused. I've been sober over two years, so it wasn't a pointless endeavor for me to follow the regimen for 3 months. I didn't lose the battle. I won.
I think others have won the battle against AL using supplements as well. In fact, the supplement based program outlined in Seven Weeks for Sobriety claims a 75% success rate among the followers.
I'm glad I took the chance and didn't allow skepticism to get the best of me. I might still be drinking if I had.

As for needing nutrients due to al depletion--I think everyone needs them due to poor farming practices, increased environmental and emotional stressors. Of course alcholol abuse will lead to further depletion of particular nutrients but I think the key there is in healing the gut. And healing the gut will have a big part in healing the addiction as you said.Psalms 119:45
