    Leptin Resistance

A new topic of interest for me. There seem to be varying schools of thought on what it is and how to best treat it. I have done a lot of reading over the last several days on this site. MY LEPTIN PRESCRIPTION | Jack Kruse. I have also ordered a book titled "Mastering Leptin" that came highly recommended.

Some think that Leptin Resistance is the precursor to Insulin Resistance and Type 2 Diabetes. I have been struggling so badly with intense hunger and sugar cravings. L-Glutamine was not the answer for me. So this topic is what my searching has turned up.

I am trying to follow Dr. Jack Kruse's dietary protocol outlined in the link above. My goals are as follows:

    1) Gain freedom from insane cravings.
    2) Normalize sleep.
    3) Improve body composition. (less fat, more muscle)

    In that order.

I am on Day 4 - so far so good.

Thought it would be interesting to start a separate thread in case others are exploring this path too.

    Hi DG,

Have you seen this on youtube?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwdxTRAH_Gs&list=FLOsDHAlYeN4A&index=18[/video]]The Leptin Diet: The 5 Rules of The Leptin Diet - YouTube

Also I think I have mentioned Dr. Ron Rosedale to you before.
He explains leptin in his book pretty much in details: "The Rosedale diet".

    It is his website:

Thanks Brian. I spent some time cruising Dr. Rosedale's site. I might order his book once I catch up on all that other reading!!!

Are you following the 5 rules? If so, how is that working for you?

I know Leptin has been discussed around here before but it really flew over my head until just recently! (killed too many brain cells I guess! :H)

        LOL!

I am not really following that.
I just found that on youtube a while ago.
I followed Dr. Rosedale's diet on and off. He is the one who made me interested in Leptin.
It is really true that on his diet, once you switch your body from sugar burning to fat burning
        your hunger goes away.
Since you are burning fat and it is always available, you do not feel hunger.

          Great material DoggyGirl.

being semi-ketogenic is working well for me. My happy zone physically and mentally is:

          moderate to hi fat
          moderate protein
moderate carbs from vegetable and fruit sources
carbs rarely from legumes and grains (hey once in a while I want some lentils or sourdough!)

when I stick to this formula my sugar, AL and regular hunger cravings are low, moods stable and energy to last.

Interesting presentation from a Dr. Lustig with his take on insulin, leptin, obesity, etc.

Lustig, the number one talk of #AHS11, now online | Dietdoctor.com

I just watched part of it and now have to run - I'm late for a meeting! :upset: Wish I could skip the meeting!

Bruun, I'm just learning about all this so not sure. I do plan to ask my doc about testing for it when my next time for thyroid testing rolls around - December or so.

From reading, it's seeming like a sensible idea to make dietary adjustments anyway. Insulin, Leptin, ankle bone connected to shin bone, all of that.

                  Leptin Resistance

Just got the book "Mastering Leptin" by Byron J. Richards. I am looking forward to reading all the details. Here are the 5 rules of his diet to balance leptin/insulin, etc.:

                  1. Never eat after dinner. (min. 3 hours between dinner and bed)

                  2. Eat 3 meals per day and no snacks.

                  3. Do not eat large meals. (he is not saying "go hungry" but IS saying "don't stuff yourself")

                  4. Eat protein for breakfast.

                  5. Reduce carbs. (he suggests a visual - palm size of protein i.e. 4 - 6 oz for women, more for men. The same palm size amount of a carb such as rice, potato, etc.) He gives general guideance on this rather than specific grams.

I particularly find the "3 meals no snacks" consistency between the different "Leptin experts" interesting. I guess all the snacking absolutely interferes with finishing digestion after a meal, and then burning fat for fuel. Seems logical.

I'm not sue if Mr. Richards recommends pretty much ONLY protein for breakfast - but I know Jack Kruse does. Lots of protein, fat is fine too, save the carbs for later is Jack's take on it.

The book has an entire section on Leptin and Addiction (al, drugs, etc.). I can't wait to read that!!!

DG, I'll wait for your review; I'm wondering about blood sugar levels on that diet.

Want, I'll check your link tomorrow.

Have either of you heard of the GAPs diet? I hear it balances brain and body chemistry or something like that. Need to google that too.

                        Leptin Resistance

Bruun, the roles of insulin insulin and the other applicable hormones in balancing energy and blood sugar are explained in detail. I almost get the impression by convincing ourselves we have to "snack" in order to keep "blood sugar stable" (assuming your are not diabetic *yet*) is sort of backwards. By snacking we mess up the whole system.

I'm no scientist so it's really impossible for me to read it and try to give a cliff note version that has a hope of being even slightly accurate LOL!! You might find it an interesting read if they have it at the library or something. Jack Kruse's site has a lot of the same info, but his typos drive me insane and it seems his mind must move at the speed of light and his web site is rather hard to follow. He needs an editor!! "Mastering Leptin" is better organized and I feel like I can follow it ...sort of! (LOL - just can't cliff note it!)

Just coming off of alcohol, I'm not sure I could have stuck to 3 meals and no snacks if for no other reason that I *needed* to be sticking something in my mouth all the time. (like I drank all the time.) At least in the early days I was smart enough for it not to be sugarcarbies. OMG where did I lose my way with that one!

                          Thanks sweetie,

I'll def look into both the Jack Kruse website and the book you mention. I like the idea of not eating all day long, all those snacks seem wrong to me because I'm not hungry for them all the time, only once in a while when I don't eat enough or have PMS. Or if I'm procrastinating but not sure I can excuse that as hunger! Thanks for the rundown!

                            Leptin Resistance

Bruun, I had Mastering Leptin with me today as I was doing some errands that involved "waiting." I read a whole chapter than really addressed the hypoglycemia issue. Definitely a book worth reading. Even if you are like me and can't remember the exact details of the science, it makes sense when I read it and makes me believe I am really doing myself a favor by working hard to stick to 3 meals a day.

Basically the high/low blood sugar things just feeds on itself by eating between meals. Hard on the pancreas as it's in constant insulin production (energy storage) mode that way, and also disruptive to the liver as the energy utilization process never really gets going while insulin is at work. I think what he is saying is that for most of us, bad eating habits (i.e snacking) CAUSES hypoglycemia - not the other way around.

He does suggest for people who are really stuck in that rut where only eating 3 times a day just doesn't work, to first do 4 meals a day and get stable there, then back up to 3.

This book sure seems to make sense why I haven't been burning (and have been STORING) fat lately!

Hi DG - I'm also very interested in this subject. Where did you find the book?

I got into the habit of eating every 3 hours (small meals) and now my blood sugar drops every 3 hours if I don't eat! It NEVER did this before I started that "diet". I think I "retrained" it to expect to eat this often!! UGGG. How is it going on this plan? Would love an update and more information!!!!

Thanks so much. How much weight are you looking to lose? I'm wanting to find a "forever" eating style that fits my need for some carbs, but has me OFF the sugar addiction. I'd like to lose 20 pounds. (15 of which I've gained since quitting smoking and drinking ... of which I did on the same day.)

                              Thanks so much!!
