    Addicted to vitamins and supplements

    I started here,

    DoctorYourself.com - Alcoholism

and then read the book - Seven Weeks to Sobriety

and then learned as much as I possibly could about vitamines and supplements.

I started taking my mountain of vitamines, as stated on the first page of this thread, and have never looked back.... it is amazing! I take my vitamines religiously and lift weights everyday.

I attribute my recovery entirely to mass amounts of vitamines and exercising, simple as that.

That is awesome!! The only thing I really did different than you is I also started using mental tools to keep me happy, like visualization, meditation, and self hypnosis. I found that after my first stint of sobriety my schedule changed, I started painting my house and I was missing workouts. When this happened is when I relapsed/started experimenting. So my advise to you would be stay on your path, but if something interupts your workout schedule, like other tasks or an injury, find something to keep you mentally stimulated until you can get back on track. Great job, and thank you for the honest response, I think it might help others here!

      Thanks sc,

Honestly words cannot explain how great I feel now that I am 97 days sober. I am going to continue on with my vitamines and weight lifting at all costs... you made me think,

I ran into an old drinking buddy at the gym who is now 2 yrs + AF and he asked me about AA meetings, so maybe that is a tool I can use in the future if something happens to me and I can't work out. I'm not religious, but hey I'll keep that door open... seems to have worked for him.

I think Im around three months AF as well and feel totally different this time round, I have been trying to stop drinking for years and getting maybe a few weeks or months but then drinking again. What Im noticing tho both about myself and others is that the daily motivation and connection whether it be from taking supps and vitamins, or medication, or working out or going to meetings, but as well as those things coming on here every day all seem to reinforce the commitment in such a possitive way.

Hi, I'm new to this site. I am a health writer, and I sort of stumbled across this site as I was doing some research for my latest article on vitamin supplements. I have not heard of vitamin taking as being an excellent way of combating AL and I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share their experience with me for my article? I wouldn't take up a great deal of your time, but with how vitamins a slammed in the media a lot it would be great to got someones story of how supplementation has helped them and how it may be form of addiction, but a preferable one. Please let me know if you would be interested

Hi Nutrilove, I cannot help you in this regard as I got sober using medication and take vitamins and suppliments to improve my overall health and well being, and therefore help me build a better sober life for myself and my family. I do hope someone does pop in and help you though, and appreciate anyone who takes time and interest in publicising and helping to improve the options people have to stop drinking.

            Best wishes

              nutrilove,

This thread pretty much sums up the benefit that vitamines have given me. I still take everything listed on page one, weight lift, and exercise daily.

Right now I am 115 days sober and going strong! AL is the last thing on my mind. I was a severe alcoholic getting drunk everyday or every second day for 10 years+ Now I am sober, healthy, and loving my guilt free life!

              The vitamine miracle!

              good luck with your article,

                Bump!

I thought that I'd bump this on my 180th AF day!

I cannot believe I have made it this far. It feels like yesterday when I started this post. The feelings of desperation, sorrow, and helplessness are still fresh in my mind. I was a professional drinker, who lived to drink and could not enjoy anything without a beer in my hand.

It sickens me how much I used to drink! I just accepted the fact that I was a slave to AL and AL was going to take my life one day. The constant embarrassment, anxiety, and guilt... I wish I could take it all back!

Along with daily exercise, determination, and this site, I believe vitamins cured my alcoholism. I cannot explain how great the last 6 months have been. It has been an amazing trip, but instead of contemplating moderating, I'm actually contemplating never drinking again. It has only brought me pain and sorrow!

                My AF journey continues...

My updated vitamin schedule is as follows:

                daily split into 2-3 doses

                4-5 g vitamin c
                1g niacin
                3g omega3
                500mg magnesium
                50mg zinc
                1g calcium
                300mg vit b complex
                5g l glutamine
                30g-90g whey isolet protein
                5g creatine
3 milk thistle and gingko gels
                50 mcg selenium

                Thank you all!

Boh: I've just scrolled through this thread, so am not fully informed, but do have something to chime in with re supplements:

I had no clue that I was an alcoholic until after a traumatic event at the age of 42. I quit drinking, etc., when I was 30. I chose vegetarianism at the age of 23, and chose "well-being" as a life-style and profession around the same time. So I've known, seen, tried . . . about everything available in terms of diet, supplements, herbs, etc. The WHOLE gamut, including only "live" food and growing my own wheat-grass for juice.:eeks: to the latest HCG, South Beach, and on and on diets.

During my 2 decades as a vegetarian, over 1 totally AF, I NEVER found a supplement, herb, vitamin, homeopathic remedy that seemed to make an actual difference. So I never took them.

Fast forward through a few years of pretty rapidly drinking myself into oblivion. When I got permanently sober with baclofen, I started investigating this thread and came across All-One and L-Glutamine. I started there, and WOW. I wanted to heal some of the damage my drinking had done, and I really FELT better with these supplements.

Then I investigated further and came across some invaluable information about "Neurotransmitters of Contentment." So I added those to my daily regime.

So now, 2.5 years post drinking, I continue with a hefty supplement protocol. I feel better. My doc (who was my student before she went to medical school) happens to be a former competitive body-builder, so she knows a lot about supplements. She has only encouraged me, and actually encouraged me to UP my L-Glute and GABA intake.

So, you go!!! Clearly, it's working for you, and That. Is. All. That. Matters!!

                      Hi Boh

I look at ther list of supplements you take with great interest.. I take similar ones to you with the addition of Hawaiian Spirilina, Probiotics and natural Astaxathin..

But I don't take the Niacin, Creatine or Whey Ioslet protein ... Can you tell me what they do?? and if i should add them to my list?

Thanks..... your supplement and exercise information.. for me its motivating and informative because I do believe that the combination of the correct supplements and excercise make the chances of being able to be AF that much more attainable ( of course, other factors, as well, are important)

Well done.. you positivity is great

                          Congrats Boh!!!

I am also a big believer in the supplements from Seven Weeks-I just put them together a little differently based on some extensive lab work I had done. When I am faithful to them and the Hypnos - I stay AF. When I don't, I falter. But I am severely hypoglycemic and wine sugar hits me hard- like a freight train - when I am crashing.

So - I don't think there is a one size fits all solution. But I am so glad you found yours. Congrats!!!!!!
That popping sound you hear is me attempting to remove my head from my arse. It's been there for years so this may take a while.
Admitting I need healing. And I am not big enough to do this alone.

Mama bear, Prairie fairy , redthread, patrice, fly away...

Thanks!!! The kind words, I cannot explain how great it feels...

                            @patrice

Niacin is a B vitamin. If I remember correctly, there was a chapter in "the vitamin cure for alcoholism" about niacin. You will have to read about it because I can't do it justice... Just make sure you get the flush free niacin or you will turn red in the face from the reaction to the vitamin.

I take the protein shakes because it instantly kills my craving for AL by making me not as hungry. I used to come home from work, hungry, the first thing I would do is start drinking while trying to make dinner. (I'd usually just get drunk and not eat what I made anyway)

When I started trying to quit drinking, I would go crazy for AL, I think because I was starving!?!? So I started drinking protein shakes when I got home and it seemed to get me through til dinner, and dinner got me through the evening... I swear it works miracles!
Also, it gives me huge results at the gym!! But that's just a bonus... Oh and the best price that I've found is Costco!! At a bodybuilding store it can be 90$+ compared to 40$ at Costco.

Creatine is purely for exercising. It increases your strength... I would not say it does anything for alcoholism.

Yes I'd say too excise has been a huge factor. The time it kills, the feeling from the endorphins, and the results you see are my favourite! I found in the beginning, being bored...sitting around the house was a disaster waiting to happen! Beer? Why not..
By getting out, my mind stays off the impulse and temptation to get drunk, and when I get home I feel so good the last thing on my mind is a beer.

My sleeping pattern was shattered from years of AL abuse...Getting drunk til 3 am, getting up for work at 7am.... Ughhhh... the memories...the hangovers were obscene! By starting a daily exercise routine, I found after my initial 4-5 day withdrawal night sweats, my sleeping became more normal. Bedtime became 10 and I sleep great and wake up refreshed!

The benefits of exercise are the tools you need to help in the battle with AL. You have to stick with it, get into a routine. It doesn't feel good the first week! You will be sore and tired, but stick with it and remember the time you spend exercising is time you're not drinking. There will be 100 other things you will want to do, but you have to keep exercising. You will start to feel better and soon. I promise...

Nobody said quitting AL was easy... Quitting AL is the hardest thing I have ever tried!

Instead of concentrating on quitting drinking, I concentrate on exercising and taking my supplements, living AF is the result.
