    Gardening

    Good one, IAD!

I'm going to put my trust in you my fellow worm killer, WTE
, and feed them your way. After reading your post I think I may have been killing them with kindness when I wasn't killing them with neglect.

I always cut up the food finely but I guess I followed my mothers advice that you can never be 'too sure' that there isn't enough food in there and the person who told me to air them was just stupid. I'm sure no one airs them in the piles of shite they live in in nature...

So for now you can rest assured that you are at least helping to keep my worms alive.

      Dumb question...

Is the gardening thread strictly for edibles or are we allowed to talk flowers as well?

If so, please say a little sunshine prayer for my seeds and seedlings I put out tonight. True to form, I'm wayyyyyy early. Most times I get away with it and I checked the 14 day forecast.. no frost in sight

You can post about anything that a slug would eat, a gohper would nibble on, a bird will peck at, or a cat may disturb to make room for its loo.

I will a say an 'anti-freeze' prayer for your little flowers, miss Sunshine Reggae

Do you first keep them indoors and then plant them out in the garden?

Hi Dizz and gardening crew. I've posted a few photos of my gardening efforts and chooks on the Underoos and mentioned to Cindi I was going to start strawberries in gutters. So heres a pic from when we first started the runners a week or so ago.

they are in an enclosure which keeps out the scrub turkeys, its where we've started our vegies.

You've got me thinking about worm farms too Dizz. We'll see...at any rate the garden is something that I love and it gives back to me and my family.

            Ohhhh.. how cool, Haps!!

Funny, I actually just saw the veggies in the gutter somewhere a couple of weeks ago and was thinking what a great idea! Wow, look at all you got there! Sigh. Now I'm green with envy :H

Yes, oh-dizzy one... I normally start lots of seeds inside but this year only a couple. I put out some holly hocks last night (not all of them, I'm being cautious) and I divided a clump of delphiniums and sprinkled seeds in with the transplant. I'm noticing some sweet peas peeking through now, too.

This will be such a nice change from the shade gardens around the house. There are so many plants I love but just can't make work.

My veggie garden is still a while off... we'll still have to cut down some trees in its future home and move a mountain of soil over there. I seriously have no concept of boredom.. I don't know about you guys

This is what my beds around the house look like:

Wow Happyplace, thats quite a setup you got there. I think I'll steal your gutter idea someday. I see you are in Australia. I'm in SA, Cape Town, and right now it feels like middle winter here so my Strawberry plants are rapidly going into hibernation. I'm in a Mediterranean part though, can you grow strawberries in winter over there? I see you take quite a military approach to anything trying to steal your strawberries. :H And rightfully so!

And Sunshine... Talk about Green with envy. I'll post a pic of my garden and not ever again because yours just look like a bloody national park or something.

I can see what you mean about no boredom but then again, I can also see what you mean about those trees. I'm serious about thinking about some spray lights. If you can't cut down trees, do you think putting on some spray lights for a few hours a day in Summer will help you grow veggies. Or is that the most bizarre plan you have ever heard? My one friend sometimes tell me his ideas often make him think that I'm on weed, but I'm not, promise

We have totally different climates to deal with, Sunshine, I suppose Cape Town is a bit like parts of France in a way (which is unfortunately why we have cool wine too) Hot summers and mild and rainy Winters.

Sunshinedaisies, I want to see a pic of your garden too! And WTE! And Space
, and everyone else in the Topa
thread (where I'm posting this link to) Even though its going to make me just take smaller and smaller photos until you can only see one plant at a time because I'm too ashamed that you guys see the relaxed atmosphere of the rest of the place.

Oh well, I'm doing it as therapy, so its OK, eh?

                :H Dizzy

No, no, I won't need lights... the veggie garden is going out by the barn and there's plenty of sunlight there. But there are some trees Mr. W. wants to take down and that's pretty much the area I have claimed for the garden. I had tried veggies around the house - or by the shop, actually - and they do grow, but the yield is just not worth the effort. 15 taters, 3 bell peppers, a laundry basket full of green tomatoes, and 3 handfuls of beans just doesn't cut it for me.

I have some half shade around the house, too and I do get away with some of the sun loving plants.. but again, they don't do as well as they could in ideal conditions.

And, I totally second your motion... pictures from everyone please!!!

ops!: I'm sorry Sun, but I'm going to have to ask you not to post anymore pics as to not shame the rest of us

PLEASE tell me you have a gardener?

I'm just teasing, your garden is really lovely. As soon as it stops raining this side and I have someone in to help me with the heavy lifting, I will post some more pics.

I do love the idea of garden pics. I mean its sharing without worrying about being *too personal.* I don't worry too much about anonymity but my bf is into high tech IT stuff so he made me promise not to do anything reckless online. So I suppose posting a pic of me on this site would count. But seeing gardens, bouncing ideas and giving advice is brilliant.

                  :thanks:

Sun where do you live!!! OMG your garden is seriously amazing.

I have a small square out in the back and Im green with envy. I didnt get round to mowing the lawn so today it is very colourfull with dandilions everywhere! I havent done much work out there after my initial enthusiasm, but then it was pouring with rain for days on end, the weeds havent started growing round my plants so apart from the lawn theres not much else to do..I had another rethink about the front garden idea and Ive changed my mind, I often forget about things like my age and bad back and after thought, and going round the shop picking things to go in it, I decided that it probably wasnt the best idea, so had to go and put everything back. I will still do something out there but I think I should start small and see how it goes, to start with I will put in the Azelia I have in a big pot that is growing like mad and needs to go in the ground, then I will see how much digging I can manage and THEN decide if I can put anything else in.

Don't you just hate when your lawn is in bloom?

I'm in Northern Ontario, Canada... 'officially' we have like a 4 months gardening season.. but as I said, I usually cheat and start way earlier

Thanks guys for the compliments. You'll notice I only take pictures when the weeds are mowed 'n stuff :H Actually, almost all of the flower beds are fairly new; I only moved in with Mr. Wonderful 3 years ago and went to work on purdying things up a bit around the house. There were 3 small beds (kinda), all of which got extended and then I added 5 more I don't think I'll add anything this year around the house.... but I'll have plenty to play with by the barn.

I went into town to get a few groceries and guess what!? The first shrubs/perennials are here!!! So, I've scored a rhododendron and a whatchamacallit (looks to be in the dianthus family). They are now happily residing by the barn

Ok. Time for work. You guys are a bad influence!

                          Gardening

Hey all - Sun - your garden is lovely!! I have planted some flowers (perennials_ but still have to put annual seeds in - probably this weekend. I have toms growing and brussel sprouts, and teeny tiny spinach is coming up - I can just make them out, also broccoli. Spuds are doing really well, carrots some I planted a week or two ago are just coming up - planted more seeds a day or two ago. Also beets! Oh and radishes. I put a couple of zucchini in and got my sweet potato plants today so they will go in this weekend too. As far as taking pics, yes I will, but then have to work out how to post them, which i keep saying I will learn how to do. I really will!!! LOL Oh, the lavendar is coming along really well, and my roses need cutting back - I have black spot on one really badly - not sure if that means I should pull it out - will have to Google I suppose. I have a lot more stuff than I thought I had when it comes to writing it all down. I also planted Dahlias and they are starting to come up and two raspberry bushes (well they are sticks right now). My garden is very small and I don't have a lot of anything but really enjoy what I do have. OH - forgot the green and red peppers!! I am putting more cosmos seeds in the next time and some zinnia seeds as I love cosmos and zinnia fior cutting.

                          End of my garden story!!

                          Hugs, SunXX
How simple it is to see that we can only be happy now and there will never be a time when it is not now....

                              Gardening

I have a big problem, its nothing to do with plants but everything to do with my garden. A few weeks ago my dogs killed two starlings in the garden in one day, since then none. I found the nest they had come from which was in an ivy bush and about 3 foot of the ground, why do birds do this, they are so bloody stupid there is a big fir tree next ot this ivy bush they can nexst in at 12 foot high but no. Anyway, the next was now empty and I pulled it out of the bush so that hopefully nothing would nest there again. NOW I have found a pair of blackbirds nesting there, its not even in the bush, not even hidden just on the top of a pole next to the bush, it was the dogs jumping up at it that made me notice and when I went out I could just see a tail poking out them the adult male flwe out. What do I do, I am now a nervous wreck wanting to stop the dogs getting them again. When this is over I think I am going to have to rip the ivy down to stop it happening in future but that is no good for these blackbirds. How long until there babys have flown the next so I can let my dogs out again? The blackbirds are so cute and I love to see them in the garden, yet me dogs sit by the window crying and getting all frustrated by them. This is not a relaxing part of gardening.

Sorry, Spacebabe... I have no sage advice whatsoever. Here, it's usually Miss Bubbles of the feline variety who robs nests, parents 'n all. I've put a bell on her in the past, but I honestly don't know how much/if any good it did.

That's about the only thing I can think of... have the dogs make noise as they approach. Good luck to you and the birdies!
