    L-Theanine for Anxiety

I just posted this in a thread in the General section:

For those of you talking about anxiety and anger, I'd like to suggest researching the amino acid L-Theanine. I happened to hear a friend talk about taking it and it helping her. The more I looked into it, the more it sounded like one of those "too good to be true" supplements. But I'm finding that it's really working for me.

Theanine is one of the few supplements that crosses the blood/brain barrier. It increases the Alpha waves in your brain and promotes a state of calm. It is believed to help with cognitive function. Of course, in the USA you're not going to find studies done on L-Theanine since it's not patentable and not a money maker for the drug companies. But I did find this page of medical studies done around the world: L-Theanine - PubMed - NCBI There are studies about it helping with ADHD, cognitive function, nicotine withdrawal, anxiety, and more.

I've been taking it for about 2 weeks. It wasn't like I noticed a difference immediately. But what I did notice within a couple days of taking it was that I was pretty chill during my hour long commute. I just didn't get worked up over the idiots on the road for the most part. Then after another couple days I realized that I felt a greater affinity toward other people and enjoyed engaging them in conversation more. I've noticed I've been more talkative and friendly and have been feeling more motivated to do things around the house. Now I have felt depression on and off for about 35 years, sometimes severe where I really didn't want to live. I've tried taking antidepressants before with little to no relief. I've tried many natural supplements that were supposed to help with depression and really saw no difference. I am extremely skeptical of any med or supplement and I never seem to get the result that others claim to receive. I feel better now taking L-Theanine than I have in a long, long time.

I've read that if you're going to buy it you should look for Suntheanine. I guess it's the preferred version of L-Theanine. I've also read that be careful if you're on blood pressure meds because L-Theanine can lower your blood pressure. It's also supposed to be good for your LDL cholesterol. The studies about cognitive function talk about L-Theanine being taken in conjunction with caffeine. I take 100mg every morning with my coffee. Then I take 200mg about a half hour before I go to bed since it's supposed to have a calming effect and may help with sleep. My husband starting taking it too btw and he remarked the other night how he didn't get all anxious about a situation like he normally would. He said the same thing as me; that it wasn't like a light switch was turned on when taking it, but that he just noticed a subtle difference after a few days. It has made such a difference in the way that I feel that if it continues I will take this for the rest of my life.

Finally, I am not a doctor. I am in no way trying to get people to buy this supplement. Please do your research. I did tell my neurologist that I was going to be taking this though and he had no problem with it.

Thanks FlyAway! I will look into this. I've tried some meds for anxiety and did not like the side effects. I appreciate you putting this info in a new thread so it's easy to find.

Thanks for the info FlyAway. This was on my list of supplements to try but I am bumping it to the top. I've been having increasing trouble falling asleep, plus ongoing depression and lack of focus. It won't hurt to give this a whirl. I am glad to hear that things are turning for the better for you.

              Hi, Hippy.

I have taken Seredyn, and it seems to work pretty well at relieving anxiety. It is also supposed to help with withdrawals. I take Amoryn, sold by the same company, after Lav recommended it quite a while ago. It seems to help my mood a lot. I took Paxil for anxiety for about five months last year, and it seemed to work well. But I wanted to avoid taking it for too long and cut back slowly to avoid some of the awful withdrawal side effects I had read about.
              Good luck with the Sedyn!
They also make Melodyn for sleep, but I haven't used it. Don't have much trouble with sleep since I am AF.

I haven't tried Seredyn but like TDN, I've heard Lavande talk about it. I think she has taken it and may still take it. I know she takes Amoryn and they're from the same company.

                  L-Theanine for Anxiety

I'm so glad you posted this Fly....

I have been using Suntheanine for about a year and I call it my happy pill! l-theanine is a precursor to GABA which gets really messed up by alcohol consumption.

I was one anxious and depressed mess when I was drinking. I might've even been anxious and depressed before I became a daily binge drinker...but I can't remember that far back! Anyway, these days I sure feel good - even in the middle of a long, dark Alaskan winter.

The other HAPPY supps I take include a very POTENT vitamin D supp once a week (I take a 50,000 iu I get from my doc) and a liquid Vitamin B complex. I also sit in front of a SAD light for about 30 minutes in the morning while doing my email work.

This combo...PLUS healthy eating, light meditation and exercise has me feeling like one big happy bubble of joy and chilliliciousness!

Your post will help a lot of folks Fly....It's great to help people learn about biochemical repair - it makes a big difference in our recovery and daily dealings. Your post helped to remind me I need to recorder more Suntheanine.

FYI...I found a great place to buy good quality supps online with decent prices: iHerb.com - Vitamins, Supplements & Natural Health Products IF you order X amount they ship free in the US (except to AK and HI - such is our shipping fate!) If you are a new customer, you can used this code to get $5 off your first order: KAB027

The brand of Suntheanine I use is Doctors Best which gets good reviews. It's in the middle price-range...not the cheapest, but not the $$$ either. I generally just take 1 a day...first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. If I've got a high stress situation ...i.e. deadlines...problems...blah..blah..blah...I take a second SUNTHEANINE happy pill on an empty stomach before dinner.

I give it a thumbs up. It was a regular item on my store shelf with a few committed users. That actually is significant in a small town. Some used it for traveling phobias as well.
