      L-Theanine for Anxiety

Everything I've read said to buy the Suntheanine version of L-Theanine. I'm not sure if that's Suntheanine or not on Ebay.

        L-Theanine for Anxiety

Turnagain;1437027 wrote: I'm so glad you posted this Fly....

I have been using Suntheanine for about a year and I call it my happy pill! l-theanine is a precursor to GABA which gets really messed up by alcohol consumption.

The brand of Suntheanine I use is Doctors Best which gets good reviews. It's in the middle price-range...not the cheapest, but not the $$$ either. I generally just take 1 a day...first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. If I've got a high stress situation ...i.e. deadlines...problems...blah..blah..blah...I take a second SUNTHEANINE happy pill on an empty stomach before dinner.

        :rays:
You mentioned Gabba here Turn. I have taken Gabba based on its reputation as a mood lifter/calming...however when I took it last, geez Louise I thought I was having heart failure...sinking feeling, panic, heart flutter, disorientation...I could hardly believe that a non pharmaceutical could produce such rapid and strong effects.

Anyone who wants the GABA please PM me :welcome:

So is the Suntheannie a Gabba Cousin or a near relative? Does it act on the same receptors or is a completely different psychopharmacological action??

        :thanks:

          L-Theanine for Anxiety

My naturopath recommended a product called Theanaq a few years ago. It had L Theanine. I stopped taking it because I was taking so many supplements that I couldn't tell what was doing what. I might try the sun theanine. I have issues with anxiety in the afternoon/ evenings.

Hi Kradle...back when I was taking GABA powder, my doc cautioned me about the potential adverse effects.. She said that GABA can boomerang and when levels go out of balance, it can actually produce more anxiety. She recommended L-theanine or Suntheanine over GABA powder as the l-theanine helps prompt your body to produce GABA naturally on its own. Like priming the pump.

I'm sorry you had an awful experience with the GABA. I would imagine you would probably do much better with l-theanine. It definitely takes time, tweaking and patience to heal our alcohol damaged systems...but we'll get there. We will.

              L-Theanine for Anxiety

I read somewhere that Sam~E was an excellent mood elevator. It works like St. John's wort but is much more potent? I have seen it being advertised as a joint supp but mood seems to be greatly affected as well. I haven't tried it myself but was curious for others input?

In one of the studies I read in the link at the beginning of this thread, they were using 400mg a day in divided doses. I have 100mg capsules. I take 200mg at night about a half hour before going to bed and I take 100 mg in the morning with my coffee. Some of the studies showed improved cognitive function with the combination of caffeine and L-Theanine.

For those of you talking about anxiety and anger, I'd like to suggest researching the amino acid L-Theanine. I happened to hear a friend talk about taking it and it helping her. The more I looked into it, the more it sounded like one of those "too good to be true" supplements. But I'm finding that it's really working for me.

Theanine is one of the few supplements that crosses the blood/brain barrier. It increases the Alpha waves in your brain and promotes a state of calm. It is believed to help with cognitive function. Of course, in the USA you're not going to find studies done on L-Theanine since it's not patentable and not a money maker for the drug companies. But I did find this page of medical studies done around the world: L-Theanine - PubMed - NCBI There are studies about it helping with ADHD, cognitive function, nicotine withdrawal, anxiety, and more.

I've been taking it for about 2 weeks. It wasn't like I noticed a difference immediately. But what I did notice within a couple days of taking it was that I was pretty chill during my hour long commute. I just didn't get worked up over the idiots on the road for the most part. Then after another couple days I realized that I felt a greater affinity toward other people and enjoyed engaging them in conversation more. I've noticed I've been more talkative and friendly and have been feeling more motivated to do things around the house. Now I have felt depression on and off for about 35 years, sometimes severe where I really didn't want to live. I've tried taking antidepressants before with little to no relief. I've tried many natural supplements that were supposed to help with depression and really saw no difference. I am extremely skeptical of any med or supplement and I never seem to get the result that others claim to receive. I feel better now taking L-Theanine than I have in a long, long time.

I've read that if you're going to buy it you should look for Suntheanine. I guess it's the preferred version of L-Theanine. I've also read that be careful if you're on blood pressure meds because L-Theanine can lower your blood pressure. It's also supposed to be good for your LDL cholesterol. The studies about cognitive function talk about L-Theanine being taken in conjunction with caffeine. I take 100mg every morning with my coffee. Then I take 200mg about a half hour before I go to bed since it's supposed to have a calming effect and may help with sleep. My husband starting taking it too btw and he remarked the other night how he didn't get all anxious about a situation like he normally would. He said the same thing as me; that it wasn't
like a light switch was turned on when taking it, but that he just noticed a subtle difference after a few days. It has made such a difference in the way that I feel that if it continues I will take this for the rest of my life.

Finally, I am not a doctor. I am in no way trying to get people to buy this supplement. Please do your research. I did tell my neurologist that I was going to be taking this though and he had no problem with it.
My bottles arrived yesterday. I shall let you know how they make me feel. I'm on such a natural high that I'm searching for a way to stay that way forever!

                              Hi Turn:

Sorry didn't respond earlier. I lost the thread! Thanks so much for this info.

I am taking a fair amount of other supps so I will be careful. I noticed also that when I take my Powdered LGlut about 5000 mg in the morning on an empty stomach I feel dizzy and disoriented about ten mins later...

It still amazes me that despite these "meds" being non pharmaceutical they can still pack quite the punch...it's no wonder the big pharm guys stay clear for the most part. They must see law suits coming down the pike big time....

Oh well, we can be our own testing ground right here

Pauly thanks for sharing your GABA Experience. Thought I was the only one!
