Conscious Living after Four Long Years

I will be marking my fourth anniversary of being a member of this life-changing site in June and am happy to say that "I think I finally get it." I am only 12 days in but feel that this time it's different. The differences are many:
    1. Does not feel like deprivation; more like liberation
    2. Wine does not entice me; I feel no envy for those sipping it
    3. Have replaced my drinking with time-filling, fun hobbies like knitting, playing the keyboard and reading
    4. I am losing weight; yay - I just might be at my perfect weight by June
    5. I have been practicing mindful living and meditation which really centres me
    6. My self-talk has gone from self-chastising to gentle reminders that drinking sends me into a tailspin that has repeated itself too many times for an intelligent person to not take serious note of.

I have decided to 'reside' in Holistic Healing because without whole foods, herbal teas, spiritual reading, communion with nature and exploring simplicity and mindfullness, I would not have achieved any sobriety to speak of.

So, on good days and bad, I will report here.

I do this for my children, my grandchildren, my health, my peace of mind, and mostly for the opportunity to learn to live with my true, unfiltered, clear-headed, vulnerable self.

      Tipplerette,

I love your list and think it sounds like a recipe for success!

Speaking of that, did you see that there is a thread for Real Food Recipes? Many of the ones I've tried are great! If you haven't come across it, the link is in my signature. Contributions are welcome !

Thanks, I am weathering my daughter's break-up without a drink. I am weathering those around me drinking without a drink. So far so good. Give an update soon, Kradle, hopefully you are feeling a little more centred and at ease.

As I said, this is a journal, so bear with me as I ramble.

Tonight and I've noticed this lately, I am feeling really grounded and quietly serene about life in general and, in particular about finally getting this monkey off my back.

At home we live in a little cottage by a raging river (which will be quieter as the seasons change). At the back of the property there is a little tin-roofed shack with a comfy sofa, some handmade furniture and each wall has a window over looking either the woods or the river. It's very forested. Last Thursday, I cleaned it out and brought my books on Zen, Buddhism, meditation, conscious living, etc.. out there along with some candles, herbal tea, an electric kettle and my hippie dress. I plan on wandering out there to read, meditate and to 'commune with nature' in the evenings when hubby has some blood bath on TV in the main cottage. I have a fire pit outside the shack and plan on having a little fire on occasion. i may even take a dip in the muddy river if the desire appears one evening.

This simple shack holds the key to my tranquility and rebirth. I need solitude, quiet, nature and gentle, nurturing words to help me make the transition from being the half-corked, loopy, dimwit I was to the self-disciplined, healthy spirited woman that lurks just below my ego's false facade. She is there and so excited to actually be living my dreams.

I am very fortunate to have access to nature right in my backyard. I see fox, deer, wild turkeys, ducks, otters, beavers and all kinds of birds on a daily basis just by looking into the woods across the river.

A new baby boy will be arriving within a few weeks so I'll be a Granny for the second and by August, the third time. Another son is having a boy then. Two boys running around next year besides our four year old sweetie. I'll be high on life chasing after them and showing them the wild blueberry and raspberry bushes, teaching them to swim and doing crafts.

It doesn't get much better than that.

Eating Fritos with Math and watching CSI Miami...

Oh, last night Sedona and I watched Franco Zeffereli's Romeo and Juliet, 1968 with drop dead gorgeaous Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey. I didn't think she would really be interested for long but my heavens she was completely enthralled...and she even understood some of the dialogue in a very simple way.

What a great intro to Shakespeare for her
So may I suggest you call up Netflix and maybe watch it with your daughter.. A minor is distraction watching a relationship that REALLY went wrong...:l

sounds absolutely enchanting and renewing, tipplerette! i found tea and mindfulness to be a huge part of my earlier recovery process (still is, but was really important in the beginning)...something about a pot of tea steeping is just soooooo, well, you know! i have a lovely clear glass tea pot and tea cup that i can see the color of the tea through...such a joy!

                peace!

                    Good morning Tip,

Love your new thread with the focus on living a beautiful AF life.

"At home we live in a little cottage by a raging river (which will be quieter as the seasons change). Love your plan, the studies you have done on all the things that I find consolation and true living in: meditation, being in nature, solitude, mindfulness, reading, peace. I wish I had a place to go when violent loud TV is goingon in my house. Wow, some of that stuff is just anxiety provoking and does not give the right mindset for peaceful AF living. I will make sure to check your posts and respond if that is OK. Nice to meet you.

I would be honoured to have your company Star Gazer Lily. I think I have sub-consciously been heading in the direction of quiet, natural, peaceful living all my life... quietly working towards obtaining that peaceful place to rest my head. Now, it's my job to learn how to get the most from it now that I have it.

I want to slowly start incorporating a daily morning routine into my life.. it goes something like this:

Awaken naturally around 6:30 which I am now doing pleasurably with my avoidance of alcohol.

Have a glass of room temperature lemon water by my bed which I sit up and drink slowly.

Have my coffee quietly and scan the newspaper; I hope to gradually switch over to green tea in the coming weeks

Take my rebounder outside and gently jump for a minimum of twenty minutes

Cook myself a warm breakfast of oatmeal, eggs, pumpernickel toast or other healthy foods

Take a minimum of ten minutes to practice deep breathing and mindfullness ie. meditation

I am hoping to have this routine fully ingrained into my morning by the end of May.

:h Today I tried to meditate but two out of my three adult children are struggling and I had a hard time relaxing and emptying my mind. The deep breathing gave me some respite from my tension. I did put the time aside to try so I feel good about that. Rome was not built in a day.

those thoughts never seem to leave the mind, do they? I guess that's the point, we notice them and go back to the breath.

sounds like a great plan, tip.

I have the bad habit of planning too much too soon. Reading back, I had better concentrate on not drinking for now and go slow on the other 'rules'... alot of the practices on my list are easily doable; I just don't want to make yet another list of resolutions only to realize after a few months that they've all fallen by the wayside.

So, yes those kinds of mornings appeal to me and my sober self will work towards them but in time; in time. I have to make sobriety my most important goal and it is a journey and not yet 'accomplished' if it ever will be. I will report here on how my mornings are going. We are getting very busy at work and since it's a family business, if we're busy we stay longer. My half days may be few and far between in the coming weeks.

                              I'm with you Tipp! :l

I'm really keeping my days loose with a skelatel plan in place - mostly revolves around the kids of course.

My biggies are chanting morning and evening at least half hour, juicing once a day, taking Luna walking in the forest and logging in as much as possible.

That's pretty much it- as I say pretty loosely goosey- my work is in there of course but as I trade the financial markets I'm not always 'in the seat' as we say in the Biz

                              Love you :h

                              Sleep well. :l
