    Morning rituals

One thing I have been trying to incorporate into my daily routine are meaningful morning rituals. When I drink, my mornings are always chaotic and rushed. It's hard to have a peaceful morning when you are battling a hangover, or dealing with suffocating shame.

I have been doing this for a while now, and it seems to help. A tranquil start to my day can keep me strong well into the evening. It reminds me of all the reasons I am trying to kick AL out of my life for good.

This is my list so far. I try to do at least a few of these things each morning.

    1. Get up earlier. This one took some practice. I have to go to bed earlier but so far it's worth it. Even an extra 15 minutes seems to help me feel less rushed.

    2. Start my day with fresh juice or a smoothie. I still love coffee, but need to flood my body with nutrients as soon as possible in the mornings. Balances my blood sugar and improves my mood too. Although I still have a cup or two of coffee later in the day.

    3. Pack a healthy lunch and some snacks for my work day. Sometimes I do this the night before. No more fast food!! It's expensive, unhealthy, and definitely makes me crave AL.

    4. At least 10 minutes of stretching, yoga or the Five Tibetans. No excuses. I can always find 10 minutes.

    5. Check in here, read and post.

    5. Finally - make my bed before I leave for work. This one I never skip. I can't remember where I read this (Leo Babauta's Zen Habits blog, I think), but I have found this simple act very therapeutic. This ritual calms my mind, readies me for my day, and it is always so nice to climb into a freshly made bed at night.

I don't claim that this happens every morning. In fact, I overslept yesterday, raced around to get ready for work, and flew out the door. And I noticed a huge difference in the rest of my day. Everything was just a bit off-kilter. That's dangerous for me, because when I get stressed, the urge to drink is strongest.

Oh and one huge disclaimer - I do not have young children at home anymore! That puts a different spin on the mornings completely. I remember those days Hard to be zen when you are getting little ones ready for their day.

Thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This is just one more tool I'm using to stay strong and sober.

    What is the Five Tibetans
With grown children I too have only myself to get out in the morning - but usually do my all my prep / thinking for the day in the bed as I hit the snooze button :H

      Morning Rituals

I like the idea of morning rituals especially getting up earlier and going to bed earlier. I will try some of these ideas as I start my journey to recovery.

            Hi, MR

I also have a morning routine that gets my day off to a good start. Not feeling rushed makes such a big difference! It sounds like this routine is a good part of your overall AF plan.

I hope you are having a nice weekend.

I also try to get up at least an hour before leaving out the door. I like watching the local news to check weather and a little extra dog walking is nice.
No matter how far you go or how fast you run, you can't get away from yourself. ....said at an AA meeting. It stuck with me.

Thanks for all the replies. It does seem like a good start to the day, whatever that means to each of us, is crucial to emotional health.

Satz - The Five Tibetans are yoga-like movements that are supposed to help keep you young, flexible and energetic. If you look around the Internet, you'll see ridiculous claims that it will cure everything and anything. I certainly don't buy that, but I do notice an increase in energy and well being when I do them regularly. You are supposed to work up to 21 reps of each movement. I'm stuck at 10!! Oh well, maybe one day Here's a link that shows how they are done: The Five Tibetans with Medicine Hunter Chris Kilham | The Dr. Oz Show

I also found an older thread started by FreeFly that went into great detail. https://www.mywayout.org/community/f1...ise-53385.html. Lots of good info here.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend. It's beautiful in my part of the world (Wisconsin USA) - low 80s, low humidity, low stress. Just perfect!

Sandra - I just noticed this was your first post. Welcome and glad you are here. You may want to visit the newbies nest or post in the Just Starting Out area. That's where you will get some much needed advice and support. Many senior members spend time there offering encouragement and guidance to us newbies. Their generosity awes me. Hang in there. You can do this!!

                    yes yes yes! love it.

I like to get up and make my family some breakfast, get them off for their days of work and school, then I go for a swim or walk my dogs (normally both, but im on crutches for 3 weeks, so my poor dogs are suffering!), come home and make a fruit smoothie and do some chores. I feel like this keeps me in balance. when I was always hung over I would get everyone off to work/school and come home and sleep until right before they came home...NO LIFE AT ALL!!! YUCK. these past almost 11 months have made me realize just how full my life can be, and I NEVER want to go back. I will always put sobriety and recovery first on my daily list, because without it, I have NOTHING worth while to give.

I really like to get up at 6, press the button on the coffee maker, change the 3 kitties' water dishes and refill food bowls...and then watch Morning Joe. I like hearing about current issues and their irreverent (at times)approach really cheers me up. I used to watch other morning shows-whatever is enjoyable! It chases away the free floating anxiety that is the hallmark of our problems with AL.

Sometimes I run early. This is the best thing I can do for my mental and physical health, but if I am in deep struggle with AL, sometimes I choose the former! If only I could get up at 5, I could run and THEN watch the news! Something to shoot for.

I like getting up, placing my feet on the floor and saying to myself thank you for being sober.
                        Standing meditation for 5 minutes
8 oz of warm water, slice of lemon squeezed in the water, dash of cayenne.
                        COFFEE, check in MWO
feed chickens, horses (cows in the winter)
                        off to work

                          Morning rituals

ok - I'm seeing a pattern here. One thing that most of you have mentioned is the joy of taking care of your animals in the morning. hmmmm....

That's got me thinking. I've posted elsewhere about the fact that for the first time in my adult life, I don't have any animals. My kitty's both died over the past few years (heartbreaking), and my beloved dog is now living in Tennessee with my ex-husband. I have been seriously debating on rescuing a dog or two, but was on the fence due to my new living situation. But it is pet-friendly and I love animals, so I am going to really think this over.

Samstone - horses? chickens? cows? You must live on a farm. Sounds wonderful.

If you can, MossRose, there's nothing like having critters, as you know! My cats get me out of myself and are so funny and cute. Not to mention affectionate! Taking care of another life or three is wonderful, even if heartbreaking at times. I have lost a number of kitties, too.

There are so many animals that need rescuing. I have a feeling you'd give some lucky animal a wonderful new home and a real chance to be happy.

yep on a farm. Horses are expensive pets!
I know your dilemma, it is important to have the situation right for an animal. If not, the joy becomes a burden
