    Aromatherapy

Ok, I know this has probably been covered countless times but I really don't feel like digging around. lol

I bought an ultrasonic humidifier/aroma diffuser and a "starter" kit of essential oils. I am clueless about this kind of stuff but I figured I'd give it a try. I know Ringing Cedars is a pro at this so if you're out there...HELP! :H

Any other tips or info would be appreciated too. Not sure what I'm trying to accomplish...a nice relaxing environment I guess!

K9, I love essential oils. I know lavender is good for relaxation. Any kind of mint is envigorating. Lemon and Bergamot are supposed to calm you down during a craving. Lemon verbena is good for that too. I love the intense fragrance of the essential oils. If you don't have a diffuser, you can soak a few cotton balls and put them in a little bowls and set them out on your night stand. I love rosemary and rosemary mint combinations. You can also get a spray pump bottle, fill it with water, a little bit of rubbing alcohol in it and your favorite essential oil and mist yourself after a shower or your mist your sheets, curtains etc. Lovely stuff!

K9 -thank you for starting this thread. I use Bergamot a lot and find it very uplifting and good for cravings. Chamomile is very calming. Frankincense is useful for meditation and quiets the mind. Patchouli is very grounding, but makes my house smell like the sixties all over again!!

I use my oils in the bath, make quick sugar scrubs for my shower, and add them to unscented hair conditioner. Very invigorating or relaxing depending on the oils used. Today, I used peppermint and feel energetic. I also use lemon on a tissue at work when my focus is waning. And I too love my diffuser. I use it every day. Plus, I haven't bought cleaning products in years. I love when my house is clean, smells good, and is toxic-free.

I'm sure there are many uses, I haven't even thought of yet. So I'm really looking forward to hearing how others are using them, and swapping a few recipes.

edit: It takes some experimenting to figure out which oils work best for you. Scent is very powerful and can bring up memories faster than all our other senses. I don't particularly like the smell of lavender because it evokes an unpleasant childhood memory in me. However, I know others who adore it. And it is great for relaxation!

K9, I guess you already know I'm the one who loves lavender

I have it growing in my garden & make nice sachets for gifts.
Lavender soap in the shower relaxes me immediately & I have diffusers going in a couple of rooms at all times. Lavender brings back good memories for me & help me maintain my cool

You'll find what works best for you, have fun

Lav - funny thing is, I have always grown lavender too - French and English and couldn't imagine a garden without it. I love the flowers with a passion. It's a shame that I associate the scent so strongly with an unpleasant memory. Maybe one day, I'll get past that because everyone I know just loves it.

My current favorite is lemongrass. 1-2 tablespoons mixed with water in a spray bottle cleans glass, floors, cabinets, etc. Everyone comments on how wonderful it smells when I use it in their house.

Hi, I hardly ever stray off the meds section but was interested when I saw Aromatherapy oils on the top of the list. I used to love using oils years ago and haven't thought about it since. I think next time I get paid I would like to buy something to get me started, any ideas of what I should get?

ps It needs to be cheapish and I don't like lavender some types bring out my hayfever sympoms

LB - I love lemongrass too. Such a clean and fresh scent.

Spacebebe - what is it you are trying to accomplish? Health, beauty, cleaning, spiritual...there are so many different uses. You already know about oils, so maybe start off again with some of the less expensive, yet powerful, oils such as peppermint, lemon, tea tree (good all around disinfectant), lavender, and bergamot. I love ylang ylang - a little more pricey, but not outrageous, and one of my favorites, although it is definitely not for everyone - very sweet smelling. Mix them with a carrier oil - almond, coconut, olive, etc. and add a few drops to your bath. Coconut and essential oils make a great hair conditioner too. Or you could just use them neat in a diffuser.

I put a few drops of sweet orange oil on a cotton ball this morning and dropped it into my vacuum bag. It made the whole house smell good, and my mood improved as I was cleaning. Just a few thoughts.

I hope I am not over posting on this thread, but I am totally passionate about aromatherapy. I would do this for a living, if I knew how to make that happen

Pixie - off to check out your thread. Thank you.

The diffuser that I purchased off eBay did not work! Soo...I went to the thrift store and found a perfectly good almost new humidifier. I've been putting several drops of the oil into the water. I've read online that this COULD ruin the humidifier...but I only paid $4 for it so I will take the chance! LOL The water reservoir is huge though....not sure how many drops to be putting in there? Plus my dog acts like he's dying because the room is so humid now...I love it...him not so much. LOL

p.s. My 12 bottles of different scents should be arriving today

Hi Pixie...sorry I missed your thread before starting another one! Did you ever buy that diffuser? I am currently just using a humidifier....my "treat" of a diffuser came in the mail and was defective.

K9 I hate that when I buy stuff off ebay and it doesn't work, its mostly electricals and stuff like that which come from china, I bought two mp3 players neither of which worked a while ago for my son, some of those small round speakers you plug into your laptop or mobile I got three of those for my three kids and they all broke really quickly, youd think I would have learned my lesson about not buying this stuff but I still see these "bargains" and go for them.

I have gone and forgotten all about this I guess I want to get some more benefits from stopping drinking, since stopping over 8 months ago I have actually felt bad, which was not my plan so I want to try and get some good feeling going, I had some lemon I think it was and put it on my shower puff for my morning shower and I think that was nice, do you think that's a good refreshing, energising one or are there better ones I could go for. Also something for my bedroom to help with sleep, even more so for my sons to help them as well so maybe to put on the landing of a night so we all get a bit of benefit. Im not sure what a diffuser is, I used to use one of theose little dish with a tealight candle underneath things as they are cheap, the problem is tho that the water evaporates quickly and I also don't like to leave candles burning because its a fire hazard. I was about to say then I should look on ebay for one of the diffusers you talk about !!! see how short my memory is.

As I say I cant do lavender so I don't know of another cheapo one to help sleep, I know chamomile is good but isn't that expensive? I thought it was.

                          Aromatherapy

I have just gone a bit mad and ordered off amazon, I have ordered lemongrass, jasmine, lavender (give it another go), sweet orange, rosemary, sandlewood so that's 6 in all!!!. I do tend to get carried away with things, especially since I hadn't even thought about this until I spotted the name of this thread because it was on the top of the holistic healing section. Who knows what new things getting into these threads will bring to my life.

So thank you K9 for starting this thread off and starting me off on a new way of changing my life. Since I stopped drinking I have looked into doing other things to help benefit myself and my family, having a lovely smaelling home is sure to help us all feel better even without the health benefits of the specific oils I have ordered, although I have yet to learn about this I have chosen simply because these are ones I think have been mentioned on here.

Oh Moss Rose I just looked back and noticed you had been so kind as to give me tips on what to start off with and I have gone and bought different ones, please keep posting tho because I really do want to learn more about this, maybe you could tell me something about the ones I will be getting soon

                            Hi Space!

                            Good to see you again!

I understand how easy it is to get sucked into the "bargains" on eBay, then to have them turn out to be crap when they arrive...and then you have to go through all the trouble to send them back (and pay for postage!!!)

I ordered 12 bottles of essential oils (they haven't arrived yet...now I'm wondering what happened). I can't remember all the "flavors" but lemon, orange, sandlewood, lavander...those are a few. A diffuser is almost like a facial steamer (are you familiar with that?) It heats up water and sprays it in a mist. Unfortunately as you know mine didn't work. So I ended up going to the thrift store and buying a humidifier. I put some drops of oils in the water and it works fine.

I'm just waiting for my oils to actually arrive...it's been about a week. My eBay purchases usually turn out great, but this one hasn't worked out so well!

I completely understand about making small changes when you quit drinking. I've found that making my home look and smell good just makes ME feel good. I'm proud of you Space...keep up the great work!!!

Hi K9 I havnt found a diffuser so maybe Im looking in the wrong place or Iv put the wrong word in so I will look again, yes I know what a facial steamer is my son actually bought one years ago when he was goping through that awful teenage skin that lads get, I had it as a teenager but I think its one thing that usually the males get the bad deal on, they deserve to get the bad deal on some stuff seem as we get it on most, menopause has been my worst nightmare of my life. Im going off topic here a bit arnt I

Anyway you bought 12 bottles!! I thought I was bad buying 6 and it is nice to have a nice home that smells good it makes me feel better too. I am hoping to move soon as my home is too small but I do actually like my house, I just wish I could stretch it somehow, it is rented so an extention is out of the question but that means the changes I have to make are with my possessions not the house itself so smells are perfect for doing that. My oils haven't arrived yet either but I need to get something to burn them in soon before they come.

Thanks you for saying you are proud of me it makes me feel better which I really need today it has been tough for me, not with the drinking that's not really a problem for me now but with people and myself. I have to go now because I have started shaking, something happened which really effected me and I think I am in some kind of shock.
