    Dan Shen (Salvia miltiorrhiza)

I am on a new mission I have spent a lot of time reading the meds threads lately and I'm intrigued by what I have learned. I reached out to a few members privately and have been impressed with their success using these protocols. Thank you to those who so generously answered my "newbie" questions. That sent me on a quest to learn everything I could about how these drugs work. I sure have learned a few new things.

Since, I always seem to be troubled by side effects when taking most prescription drugs (emotional or physical - don't know), and live in an area that would make it impossible to find a doctor that would prescribe anyway, I have spent the last several days searching for natural alternatives. While, I haven't yet found anything that would truly mimic their effectiveness, I have stumbled on some interesting information.

I am not familiar with Chinese herbs, so I was wondering if anyone has heard of this herb, is using it, or has any more information, particularly about the standardized extract: IDN 5082. It looks like these studies were very promising and then just stopped. How disappointing. Sorry for the dry reading, but I found this fascinating.

    Hi Moss Rose,
I am just returning to the forum, again with hopes of stopping my alcohol consumption.
Your post got my attention. I have used some Chinese herbs generally under supervision, & kudzu, which helps many of us with craving, was used for a long time by the Chinese before we adopted it.
I did a quick internet search on Dan Shen and it looks like it is primarily used as a blood thinner to treat cardiac problems and prevent stroke. I think it might be kind of dangerous to take without direct help from a Traditional Chinese Medicine Dr. and at that, using it to reduce alcohol intake might be very off-label. Very disappointing. I, too, would love to find something to help me kick this disease without having to go to a Dr….

Jennfire - I agree. I'm not knowledgeable enough about this herb to take it. In fact, the book I was reading had pretty strong warnings that dabbling in Chinese herbal medicine is ill advised and requires professional guidance. I was just curious why no one has followed up on such promising results using this herb to halt drinking. Maybe it can't be patented, so big pharma wouldn't be interested in funding more studies. Not sure why, but it's a shame.

        Hi Again Moss Rose,
I think maybe it has to do with the blood thinning properties. Drinkers generally damage their livers and then their blood thins naturally, notice the bruising on any long term drinker (like me). Any further blood thinning can lead to things like hemorrhage or stroke. No pharmaceutical company is going to want to take responsibility for that kind of side effect. Just my guess....

Oh Jenn, I absolutely love your attitude. Here I am spreading conspiracy theories, and you are giving everyone the benefit of the doubt. I can learn much from you. I see that you are quite new to MWO - well, at least posting. Welcome and I hope things are going well for you. I'm originally from Michigan. I lived there for 32 years, so I will always consider it home. Nice to meet you.

            Hi Moss Rose,
Thanks for being so kind. Actually I've been here before several times, initially in 2008, and I thought I had the demon alcohol beat then with Topamax. Since then more problems off and on. I"ve been Just lurking alittle the last few days, which brought my attention to your post in the Holistic area, since I've always been into holistic healing.
Right now I am planning to detox at home over the coming weekend starting mid-day Friday through Monday. I am going to a Dr. who says he will give me some Librium, other than that I am on my own pretty much. I am planning to post here to MWO for support and I hope maybe I can count on you, too (no obligation though). Only one of my friends knows what I am doing, she lives about 2 hours away and likely can't get off work. So far I have cut down from 3 liters of wine /day to 1, maybe a little less. so, hoping for the best! Don't want to burden you... I will post onto Newbie's Nest on Friday mid-day.
I m south of Detroit these days. Grew up in the general area. How about you?
Really do love being more out of the city than this, but here is fine for now.
            Be Well,

Hi Jenn. Hi MR- was just reading your posts and wanted to drop in. jenn you do have a great attitude, truly. I wish we were all closer to one another especially to help see you through the first few days Jenn. :l

I haven't had to do a significant detox...other than incredibly awful hangovers :egad: but I know that several members have done this and I believe there is a link to a web page about safely detoxing at home.

Sounds as though you have a Dr. Helping so this is excellent! I'll see if I can find that thread/link.
Good to see you and thanks MR for your links . You're right about being cautious around herbs and such...did you see what happened to me when I took Niacin??

              Really Scary.....

Hi Jenn - I have not gone through a significant detox either, so can't offer advice other than to be careful but I will definitely be here for you if you need a friend. I'm sure many others will be by your side too. Just a thought - maybe you could post your plan in the Newbies or General section. Not as many people visit the holistic area, so I don't want you to miss out on some great advice and support. Don't worry, I'll find you no matter where you post:l Hopefully the Librium take the edge off. Anyway, I'm going to be standing with you during the whole thing.

I grew up in the Detroit area too. In fact, I still have lots of friends and family there, so I come back for visits at least once or twice a year. Always get terribly homesick when I have to leave. Only another Detroiter could understand. Take care of yourself, ok?

Kradle - I missed your post on niacin. What happened? Inquiring minds want to know.

                  Hi Moss Rose & Kradle,

Thanks to you both for your kind responses. It’s good to know someone will be here to “talk” to.
I will post into “Newbies” I guess, even though this is not my first attempt at quitting. Maybe they will tell me if I need to go elsewhere???

I went to the Dr’s. He doesn’t remember me that well, but gave me scripts for the Librium & more
Topamax. Been taking the MWO supps for a couple of weeks. So, guess I am ready for morning. I bought club soda, & I have some good teas, figure coffee might not be a good idea… Maybe it’ll be a nice day and I can take a walk, depending on how the med hits me.

Moss Rose, I saw your post in a different area about your brother. I am sorry for what you are both having to go through. I lost my sister and mom to alcohol. Life doesn’t seem fair. Thank you for your kindness to me.

Kradle, whatever happened to you with niacin? I am curious now. The Dr is pushing thiamine, lucky for me…. Thank you for being here.

Have a happy, peaceful Friday night,

                  Be Well,

Jenn, I assure you that no one will tell you to "go elsewhere." The folks here aren't like that. If you post, you will get support. I have had to do it many times. Sometimes I have been so worried, like you, that people here would say, "enough is enough." But they never do. That's what makes MWO so special. The people here never give up on us. No matter what. So please, tell your story and accept the help. It will keep you strong. It works for me.

Thank you for the kind words about my brother. Yes - that's a touchy subject with me. He is not exactly the kind of person who would join MWO, if you get my drift. So I am trying to prepare myself. I'm sorry to hear about your mom and sister. You have had to endure much.

Hang in there. It sounds cliche, but I really mean it. Hang in there!! It will get easier after the first few days. xxxx

                      Thank you Moss Rose,

You are so supportive. I did just post on Newbies. I need to lie down a bit, but will be back to the forum shortly.
                      Thanks again...

I don't know if anyone is watching this thread anymore but Kudzu with St. John's Wort was very helpful in modding for a very long time. And I could definitely tell the difference during those occasional weeks the Kudzu was on back order. (which is actually what got me from just lurking to posting) Added Qi Gong to the meditation to complete the TCM prescription sans the acupuncture. That's for my blood pressure.
