Hey Pav, I agree with Free on Yoga Journal as a resource for creating an asana home practice. Another great reference is Elephant Journal, link here

5 Simple Strategies for Starting & Maintaining a Home Yoga Practice. ~ {Video} | elephant journal

Something I give my students as homework is Sun Salutations. Master a simple Sun Sal sequence - trying saying that seven times swiftly - and you've got the basis for an asana home practice. You can begin with a seated meditation, move into spine warm ups like Cat/Cow, come up to your Sun Salutation and when you've got an understanding of the breathe in these, add variety when you step back by bringing in standing poses like Trikonasana or Virabhadrasana - Warrior in any stages. Really good for keeping you present and just do as many as you have time for while allowing for quieter poses after

            Hi, All:

I didn't do any yoga today, although I did some stretches for my hamstrings. I took a long, beautiful hike and at the top of the ridge I had a path all to myself. As I was walking I said, "I don't drink" 108 times to myself. It was a great meditation in a perfect spot.

Thanks for the information on the home practice. Now I have to get some discipline. I can start with the sun salutations and go from there.

              Hi Free:
Day 4 and doing great. Haven't done any yoga yet but hit the gym Thurs, Fri and rode 50 kms today on my bike. Will try to get some yoga in this week.
I use DVD's for yoga when I can't get to a class. I have so many. Rodney Yee is my favourite.
              Take care,
              R4L

Hi R4L, 50km is a long distance. Good for you.

I just finished an incredibly stressful day here in WAfrica and had MAJOR thoughts about going straight to the VIP lounge and drowning my misery in red wine. But, the "I don't want to drink" mantra approach worked. Barely got to 30 mantas and I was already clear that I didn't want to drink, called my husband to vent about my difficult colleagues, and then got on MWO. By the time I had done all that, I was ready to walk past the bar, past the "help yourself" open bottles of wine and ordered by seltzer water and lime.

Plan to get in just a half hour of yoga and then call it a day> I think Rodney Yee is great.

                Cheers.

Just posting this for anyone unsure about what a Sun Salutation is

A mantra I like is just saying your name and the words "Here and Now"

Keeps it all very simple and doable.

And also, with the sequence above, make allowance for YOUR body. Bend the knees in forward fold, take the knees to the ground when you are lowering in plank. Don't be hard on yourself. And Breathe General rule is IN on an extension of the body and OUT when you bring the body in on itself.

                        Greetings y'all.

Brilliant thread FAL. Thanks for starting it.

Thanks Happs for above sun salutation depiction. It's very helpful for me. I've been reading up on yoga coincidentally as it happens.

                        Take care everyone.

                          Hi all,

I've been following this thread. I usually post on the meds forum, but I saw the word yoga and had to check it out! I'm a long time Bikram yogi going on 11 years. The last 3 years I have incorporated vinyasa and some ashtanga. I can't believe I drank and had such a vigorous yoga practice. I think somehow the yoga counteracted the ill effects of all the wine.
How sad! I now take baclofen and have been pretty much sober for almost 3 months.

I wanted to point you to a great online yoga resource called Grokker.com. Two of our local teachers have videos online and they are fantastic. I also highly recommend baron Baptiste videos if you his style.

MHP, thanks for posting the great illustration of a sun salutation. Will be so helpful for those just starting.

Samand, congrats on three months and great to have you joining us.

Mr. G -- you know we're always honored to have the likes of you joining any thread Hope you add yoga to your lifestyle choices.

Am so glad this morning, that I didn't allow my negative emotions last night to break my AF living. Having a goal of 108 consecutive AF days was enormously helpful.

Here's to a great day, full of breath.

I hate the man...many studios are changing to a hot yoga, or adding vinyasa. I only do it once or twice a week now. I find it's too taxing in my 50's. Bikram the man is a horrible person. I know one of the plaintiffs in a law suit against him.
