    Fasting pre and post chemo

    Morning! better today.

So tomorrow is two weeks since my first chemo. Diet has been mostly good, I'm struggling with a strict ketosis diet though. Some carbs creeping back in - sourdough bread toast - and literally every gift this last week has been full of sugar. I'm sharing it, even though I'm not a good sharer, but even so that little creeping back in worries me. I think in truth I have to reassess where I'm at as its draining mentally to think so much about food. And I do. OCD? haha

My scalp is feeling strange so I think it will be time to have the head shave happening soon. My lovely Undies friends have been helping to find pics of henna crowns, which I'm going to have done once I commit to shaving it all off. And I'm planning a head shaving party. And a trip to do a workshop for yoga teachers to teach those dealing with cancer. Financial shit is sorted. Time to look to the future and make some changes that will be good for me and my family.

Morning MHP! Wow, your own thread

NS, I make those same cabbage cakes, they are yummy. My hubby cant really eat them though, they really bother his digestive system (give him a ton of gas!). After he had part of his colon removed due to cancer he is a bit sensitive food wise.

Yoga for cancer, that sounds very interesting.

I would love to visit someone I met here - how nice you were able to do that!!

It isn't surprising that a diet that kept you in ketosis would be a challenge. You probably are keeping your blood sugar quite low, though, and that keeps insulin and all the other associated growth factors low so it probably is helping anyway. I hope you don't let your diet become an added source of stress - that would be sending your body all the wrong signals.

A shave and a crown sound like a great plan! I haven't seen anyone do a crown before but I love the idea.

Good to see you here, Nar, and it was fun to see you over on the Loamers thread, MHP! Hope you stop by more often.

Hope today is a good one. xx, NS

Morning all (at least it is here Got back from my 5 day camping trip AF! MHP, you were in the back of my mind the entire time. I love the Yoga for cancer idea. What a great help to those that feel spent due to chemo. I wish we didn't live a world apart. I'd love to meet you and see your crown. Any chance you could share a photo when it's done? Thank you for sharing this part of your life with us. Take care.....

NS, I LOVE the cabbage steaks. It's a mainstay around my house. Hope all of you have a great day no matter what time it is where you live!

MHP, my cousin, now fit and well had breast cancer about 8 years ago......got her head shaved, purchased a wig very close to her own hair, a load of bandanas......
She invited everyone to a bbq a couple of weeks later. She was wearing her wig - halfway through the night she took centre-stage and with a big 'Yeeha!', she whipped off the wig and threw it across the crowd....never seen it on her again.
Have to say she had a lovely 'crown'. I did comment that if it were me I would have to cover up; only because I have fallen 'drunk' on my bap so many times, my bap would resemble a small mountain range!
The henna tattoo is a great idea, especially because you can change it every few weeks.......
Are you losing weight on this ketosis diet?
IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO BE WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE BEEN
Relapse starts long before the drink is drunk!!.Fresh Start!

:H Yep, I feel all grown up Nar

Daisy I love what your cousin did, made me laugh too. I think its really cool to choose your moment and wow she did just that, didn't she? I'm not sure if I've lost weight on the diet, I'm just under the 60kg mark normally and I think without the amount of yoga I was doing before I'm losing muscle tone so it's hard to say. And I tried to pm you to say thank you so much for the books you sent me xx

I think I will put up some photos Ginge, have to time it right for when you're all around, I'll be sitting up at midnight madly posting and driving everyone nuts. Which I'm doing at the moment, sleep patterns are all over the place. But I am sleeping and that's good.

NS I think I can get my head back into the diet, just planning and that was easier when my husband was at home with me the first week. I wont be too hard on myself for what's past and just try to plan ahead with meals and he's helping me with that.

One question, can anyone remember seeing the recipe for Bone Broth on another thread?
I was thinking that when I fast pre chemo next week, that I'd fast on that.

I have a laid back approach:

Water + 3 Tbsp. Cider vinegar + 1 Tbsp. Sea salt (fill to near the top of the pot with water after everything else is in).

Bones with marrow from a trusted source - add in some chicken feet if you can get them for the collagen. I shoot for ~4 Pounds total.

Vegetables that are in the drawer - unpeeled onion, leeks, carrots, celery, many unpeeled gloves of garlic, hot peppers, etc.

Cook it all in a large crock pot on high until it is simmering. Turn to low and leave for at least 24 hours. More is fine. Makes the house smell great!

Strain out all the solid stuff and discard (don't give the bones to your dog).

Let the broth cool in the frig. Remove and discard the solid layer of fat from the top, divide into portions, and freeze. Enough fat will remain to give you some energy.

It is so delicious! The beef broth tastes like liquid steak.

You may need more salt, especially on a low carb diet.

                Enjoy!

NS - I just made your Cabbage Steak for lunch - sensational! Thank you. I used S&P, chili flakes, crushed garlic, thin slivers of red onion and a tiny drizzle of fish sauce at the end. Put a poached egg on top. Soooo good. Happs - I think you'll love it. Here's the look I went for. It reminded me of the Tree of Life. Seems appropriate for your thread.

Glad you liked it, Tawny. Adding the egg makes it a complete meal - I'll try that next time.

The one in the photo is certainly more attractive than mine! I think I made the post-forest fire Tree of Life :H. It was pretty much caramelized and broken apart with burnt edges.

How's it going, Happy (that sounds friendlier than MHP )? I think of you when I'm cooking theses days. Did you ever try this from https://www.mywayout.org/community/f44/real-food-recipes-6-73623.html ?:

                        Baked Shrimp with Tomatillos

                        INGREDIENTS

                        2 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 medium onion, chopped, about 1 cup
                        1-2 jalapeno chiles, seeded, minced
                        3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
                        1 lb tomatillos, chopped
                        Salt
1/2 cup clam juice OR 1/4 cup water
                        1 lb shrimp, cleaned, deveined
1 cup Cotija queso seco cheese (can substitute feta)
                        1/4 cup chopped cilantro
                        Lime juice
                        Black pepper
An oven-proof saut? pan or cast iron pan

                        METHOD

1 Heat oil in the pan you will use for baking. Add the onions and jalape?os, cook for 5 minutes on medium high until the onions begin to brown. Add the garlic and cook a minute more. Add the tomatillos, reduce heat to medium and cook for 10 minutes, until the tomatillos are cooked through, but still hold their shape. Sprinkle salt over the tomatillos as they are cooking.

2 If using clam juice, add to pan, turn up the heat and reduce by half. If using water, just add the 1/4 cup of water without reducing. (NOTE: extra liquid may not be necessary - you don't want it to be too runny).

3 Add the cheese and shrimp. Cook in a preheated 425?F oven for 10 minutes.

4 Remove pan from the oven. If using a pan with a handle, such as a cast iron frying pan, I recommend cooling the handle with ice for safety; it's so easy to forget that pan has just come out of the oven, and you grab the hot handle by mistake. Right before serving, mix in the cilantro and sprinkle with lime juice and freshly ground black pepper.

                        Yield: 4

I love the sound of that recipe NS. Just madly googled Tomatillos and found this

Interestingly I think I can get the seeds to grow them too. Mmm...

Ok, so yesterday was really bad. I'd been feeling a little unwell since Wednesday night, think I might have picked up some germs - have visions of Mr Burns from the Simpsons in his Howard Hughes phase, fetch me the Spruce Goose Smithers...and I've not been as careful on the no hugs, contact with people stuff as I could have been. Plus stressful day, work related. Was really sick, vomiting and nausea etc. Didn't eat either which is not a good thing. Good today though. But just having a piece of toast for breakfast. Damn it.

And shaved off my hair this morning. It is gone...how I feel on the inside is different to how I look on the outside. It's kind of liberating getting rid of it.
