I need help
Hi, it sounds like people get a lot of good support here. I had five years of continuous sobriety about five years ago but can't handle going back to AA. Even though I know I'm hurting myself I just do not want to stop drinking, but it's getting out of hand. Of course I am hoping to be able to moderate my drinking, and I've heard supplements, etc. help. I have never heard of topamax (?) before and am afraid to tell a doctor about my drinking because of insurance consequences and privacy issues. This is scary, I'm so afraid I'm not going to be able to help myself. Thanks for listening.Tags: None

Hi Chrysalis and welcome,
You are right about the support on here. Everyone here is finding their own way out but supporting others in their aims too. Moderation is possible but maybe not for everyone. Read all you can and definitely read the book. Good luck on your journey.

:welcome: Chrysalis!
Glad you found us! Download the book and get a good idea at what this program is about. We also have a Monthly Moderation Forum where you will find others who are moderating successfully or are trying to moderate. They are a good group of people and can help you along the way.
Read through the posts and post when you want to. There is always someone around to answer any questions you may have; and if not, there will be someone in a matter of time.

Hi Chrysalis
Lots of people find it a good move to have a period of AF before considering how/whether to moderate....it sort of clears the mind (and body) so you can make a good strategy for yourself. Maybe a 30 day AF to start? No-one says it's easy...but it can be done
Your five years of sobriety is a marvellous achievement! You have more strength than you know!:l
You'll find lots of help here....keep reading and I'm sure you'll find the way forward for you.
Suze xJust hand me the chocolate and.........I'll consider my position. My solicitor has advised me to say no more than that.

Welcome Chrysalis:welcome:
I also never wanted to tell a doctor, but when I finally did five months ago, it was not anywhere near as bad as I thought, they have heard it all before and many of them have even had their own issues..
Mine was not really that helpful I don't think he really understood how it can completely overtake an otherwise rational person- but just the fact I had someone to report to did help, and it would certainly be useful to monitor the Topamax as it does not agree with everybody.
Good luck.

Hi Chrysalis-
Glad you found this site. I didn't want to go back to A.A. either (though I will if I need to). I personally am not a candidate for moderation.
And as far as the doctor - i had the same concerns. Not sure where you live, I'm in the U.S. . I looked online for at home Alcohol treatment options and got a list of Doc's in my area. I went to one I found on liveoutsidethebottle. com and told him the story straight out. He knew all about meds and was very willing to help me. I was also concerned about privacy and insurance repurcussions and told him so. He understood and was willing to code my visit with something besides addiction/alcohol cessation. It really worked out. If you can afford it, you could also go to one of these docs and pay for the visit/meds without insurance.
Definitely read the MWO book.
Good luck and keep posting!

Thank you all so much. I was surprised this morning to find so many lovely words of encouragement. I have ordered the book and tapes, etc. Does AF mean abstinance? I'm assuming so. A month off couldn't hurt...(well, it would hurt, but it could be a good idea). You all are very inspiring. Thanks.
