hi everyone! I've been wondering about these meds. I have a Dr's apt thursday and I planned on trying to get campral but it seems a lot of people are doing topamax. Anyone got advice for which I should do? What are side affects? Do they work? Any input would be great:thanks:

I hope someone will respond to this. Topa is great for curbing the desire to drink, at least for awhile but the fog sucks. I'd like to try Campral and have a starter pack but I'm unsure, do I need to stop drinking for a few days first? That was the beauty of Topa. Dose up slowly and then one day like magic, no desire for alcohol.

true indeed they are very different drugs and have different abilities/limitations/side effects etc.

Campral works well (for me) if I'm abstaining. I've not tried Topa though many have had great success with it. the only side effect I've had with Campral is perhaps a bit of gas...no biggie.

Good luck with your doc. I have been on campral for 2 months. It helps with physical cravings and for me has no side affects. once you drink, however, it loses its effectiveness. So, use it in good health, but keep reading about other strategies such as not getting too hungry, too tired, toos stressed. Its just a part of your overall plan.

Det, its all those veggies that are giving you the wind. Stick to good ol' cheeseburgers and that will clear right up!!:H

I have tried both as well. Topa was not good for me, too many sideeffects. I does make you not want to drink or eat. Campral works pretty good, like everyone else said. You need to go AF for it too really work. Topa takes the physical and mentals away, and campral only takes the physical away. Campral had no sideeffects for me.

Yes, you're OK s to start on Campral before you dry out and go AF. If you can taper off, do that over a few days, but if not just hang it up. Campral doesn't conflict with alcohol, just that alcohol removes it effectiveness. You'll feel it in your head a little when you first start. I felt like there was a warm fish swimming around in my head. Kind of nice, really. And take some comfort from the mechanics of that med. It goes to the part of the brain that needs/wants booze and sooths it. Cool, huh?

Does it make you feel high? I can't feel like that with my job. topa makes you less hungry? I need that too!!!!!!

Campral

You do need to be AF before you start Campral - as stated by someone else, no effect if you are drinking on it. I find it to be 100% helpful in controlling cravings - I did have one side effect (um, "upset stomach" should explain that one) about a week into being on it - and it lasted several days. But it is worth it for the help it gives me. No, no "fog" or high feeling. Gotta take 2 pills 3 times per day as it has a short half-life.
